These routes are not interchangeable: only holding bitcoin directly gives you bitcoin you can transfer or spend, while an ETP provides investment exposure without putting bitcoin in your personal wallet. The right route depends on what you want to do, who controls the keys, and how much volatility and operational responsibility you can accept.
What does it mean to use the Bitcoin market?
“Using the Bitcoin market” can mean acquiring bitcoin for payments or transfers, holding it in expectation of price changes, or buying a security or trust interest that tracks bitcoin-related exposure. Before choosing a route, decide whether you need bitcoin itself or only want exposure to its price.

- For payments: acquire bitcoin or accept it for goods or services, then use it where a merchant or service accepts it.
- For direct ownership: buy bitcoin on a cash market and keep it in a wallet you control or with a custodian.
- For investment exposure: consider whether a spot or futures ETP available in your jurisdiction fits your needs. A U.S. ETP is not the same as bitcoin in a spendable wallet.
Bitcoin.org’s getting-started guide organizes direct use around learning the risks, choosing a wallet, getting bitcoin, and spending it. Merchant acceptance varies; do not assume a business accepts bitcoin just because it operates online.
How can you acquire and use bitcoin directly?
Buy bitcoin
A cash-market purchase gives you bitcoin exposure directly. Depending on the service, the bitcoin may be held in an account managed by that provider or transferred to a wallet whose keys you control. Check what the service actually lets you withdraw, what fees apply, and what happens if access is restricted.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Accept bitcoin for payment
If you sell goods or services, you may be able to accept bitcoin where local rules and your payment setup permit it. The transaction still exposes you to price movement if you keep the bitcoin rather than converting it. Consider how you will record the transaction and meet any tax or reporting duties under local rules.
Spend or transfer bitcoin
You can send bitcoin to a participating merchant or another wallet. Verify the destination address and the amount before confirming: a mistaken transfer may be difficult or impossible to reverse. Bitcoin.org explains basic use and risks in Some things you need to know about Bitcoin.

Bitcoin wallet: what it stores, and who controls it
A wallet is software or a device that manages the private keys used to access bitcoin. It does not contain bitcoin as a file; the keys enable control of assets recorded on the network. Losing a private key or recovery information can permanently cut off access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSelf-custody
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting them and maintaining recovery information. Keep backups private and secure, never share a private key or seed phrase, and be alert to phishing. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance covers backups and keeping recovery information private. A hardware wallet is one possible way to manage keys, not a guarantee against compromise, loss, or user error.

Third-party custody
A custodian may simplify account access, but you depend on that provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. The SEC’s Dec. 12, 2025 custody bulletin advises investors to research custodians, protect credentials, watch for phishing, and use strong passwords and multifactor authentication. Ask about withdrawal terms and fees, including custody, transfers, and account setup or closure.
Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.”

Direct bitcoin, spot ETP, or futures ETP?
These routes differ in what you hold, how you access it, and the operational work involved. The distinctions below describe the U.S. products addressed by the SEC; availability and legal treatment vary by jurisdiction.
| Route | What you hold | Can you spend or transfer bitcoin? | Key control and main considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct bitcoin | Bitcoin, held in a wallet or custodial account | Yes, if you have transfer access and the recipient accepts it | You or a custodian manage access; consider volatility, security, fees, and withdrawal terms. |
| U.S. spot bitcoin ETP | An interest in an exchange-traded product that holds bitcoin and seeks to track its price | No; it provides investment exposure, not bitcoin for payments | Personal wallet and key handling may not be needed, but the product and underlying asset carry risks. |
| U.S. futures ETP | An interest in an exchange-traded product holding bitcoin futures contracts | No; it provides futures-based exposure, not bitcoin for payments | Exposure comes through futures contracts rather than bitcoin held directly. |
The SEC’s Sept. 9, 2024 ETP bulletin says U.S. spot bitcoin ETPs are commodity trusts, not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940—even if “ETF” appears in a product name or common description. It also distinguishes spot products that hold bitcoin from futures products that hold futures contracts. Avoid assuming an ETP has the same protections or structure as a conventional registered mutual fund.

Risks to weigh before participating
- Price volatility: Bitcoin’s value can change sharply and unpredictably. The SEC office’s 2024 bulletin says, “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.”
- Custody and withdrawal: A provider may fail, restrict access, or not honor withdrawals. Self-custody avoids reliance on an account provider for key control but puts backup and security responsibility on you.
- Platform and fraud risk: The CFTC warns that many cash-market platforms operate online and may be unregulated or unsupervised. Its virtual currency trading advisory also treats futures speculation as high risk; derivatives are not a beginner shortcut.
- Irreversible mistakes: Sending funds to the wrong address or losing recovery information can be difficult or impossible to undo.
- Privacy: Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent on the network. If an address is connected to your identity, activity may be linkable; bitcoin should not be treated as anonymous.
- Local rules and tax: Legal and tax obligations depend on where you live and the facts of a transaction. Bitcoin.org directs users to check requirements from their government and local authorities; these sources do not determine your specific tax treatment.
A practical decision checklist
- Set the purpose. If you need to pay or transfer bitcoin, direct bitcoin is the relevant route. If you only want price exposure, compare direct ownership with an available ETP.
- Choose who handles keys. Decide whether you can securely manage private keys and backups yourself or prefer a custodian, accepting provider and withdrawal risk.
- Check the route’s actual terms. Review fees, withdrawal access, custody arrangements, product structure, and the protections that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Plan for loss and volatility. Do not commit money you cannot afford to lose, and understand how you would respond to a sharp price fall, an inaccessible account, or a mistaken transfer.
- Verify local obligations. Check current tax and legal requirements with local authorities or a qualified professional before buying, selling, accepting, or spending bitcoin.
