The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is a powerful but expensive desktop for a narrow group of professionals whose work can use its extra GPU performance. In PetaPixel’s October 5, 2026 review, it excelled in several photo and video benchmarks, but the reviewer recommends the less expensive M5 Max Mac Studio for most editors. The review’s “new Mac Pro” comparison describes a shift in Apple’s high-end desktop role—not an equivalent expansion design.
What did PetaPixel review, and how much did it cost?
PetaPixel’s review unit had an M5 Ultra with a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, 256GB of unified memory and a 4TB SSD. The publication said that configuration cost $12,300 in the United States. That is the price of its tested machine, not the starting price: Apple listed the M5 Ultra Mac Studio at a U.S. starting price of $5,499 in 2026. Configuration and pricing can change, so check Apple’s current listing before buying.

Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with availability scheduled to begin September 22. Apple’s listed maximum configuration reaches 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. Apple said the 512GB memory option was due in late October 2026. PetaPixel reported that this option would add $6,000 to the configuration it described; that is the reviewer’s reported pricing, not a general price for every configuration.

How did the M5 Ultra perform in creative apps?
PetaPixel moved its Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve testing to Puget Systems benchmarks, using repeatable application workloads that included RAW-photo operations and GPU-intensive video-editing tasks. The publication reported that the M5 Ultra was its strongest tested Mac in those workloads, with especially notable gains in Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Those are PetaPixel’s results, not Apple’s benchmark claims or independent results reproduced here.

Lightroom Classic
PetaPixel reported that the M5 Ultra was 22% faster than the M3 Ultra in its Lightroom comparison. That figure reflects the publication’s stated test set; it should not be read as a guaranteed gain for every Lightroom workflow or as a direct prediction for a particular photographer’s catalog.
Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve
The reviewer described particularly strong results in both video applications, where GPU-intensive work can make the Ultra’s additional graphics capability useful. The review also noted that its DaVinci Resolve comparison set was smaller because Puget Systems had recently changed that benchmark. Project complexity, codec, software version and export settings can all affect how much a given editor benefits.

Photoshop
The M5 Ultra was only marginally ahead of the M5 Max in PetaPixel’s Photoshop results. The reviewer attributed the smaller gap to the workflow’s greater dependence on CPU performance, which makes the Ultra’s GPU advantage less decisive there.
These findings are useful as a signal about the kinds of workloads that may benefit, not a universal ranking for every application or project. PetaPixel compared machines it had tested; the review does not establish that every system was tested with identical current software versions.

M5 Ultra or M5 Max: which Mac Studio makes sense?
Apple’s 2026 U.S. starting prices were $5,499 for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio and $2,499 for the M5 Max Mac Studio. PetaPixel recommends the M5 Max for most photographers and video editors. The Ultra is easier to justify when a professional’s demanding, often paid work can regularly use the extra performance—particularly in heavy video workflows—and the cost of waiting or rendering matters to the business.
| Consideration | M5 Max Mac Studio | M5 Ultra Mac Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Apple’s U.S. starting price in 2026 | $2,499 | $5,499 |
| Best fit in PetaPixel’s recommendation | Most photographers and video editors | A small minority with demanding work that benefits from the additional performance |
| Evidence from PetaPixel’s app testing | Near the Ultra in Photoshop; the review describes smaller gains there | Stronger reported results in Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve |
The table’s performance description is qualitative: PetaPixel’s specific results depend on its workloads and test set. If your main work resembles its Photoshop workload more than its GPU-heavy video tests, the premium is harder to justify on the evidence in this review.

Is 512GB of unified memory worth paying extra for?
Apple lists up to 512GB of unified memory for the M5 Ultra and positions the high memory ceiling in part for local AI workloads. PetaPixel cautions against spending another $6,000 for 512GB simply for ordinary Adobe and Resolve editing, arguing that doubling memory is valuable only when a workload is actually memory-constrained. That is the reviewer’s advice, not a universal memory-sizing rule. Before paying for the option, determine whether your specific applications and projects are routinely limited by memory.

Does the M5 Ultra Mac Studio replace the Mac Pro?
PetaPixel says Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March 2026 and argues that the Ultra Mac Studio has taken on its high-end professional-desktop role. Treat that as the review’s interpretation: the Apple sources cited for the M5 Ultra establish the Studio’s specifications, but do not independently document the Mac Pro discontinuation.

The analogy also has limits. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is a compact desktop with Thunderbolt 5, and PetaPixel notes that Thunderbolt can connect it to expansion chassis. The sources do not establish that it offers the Mac Pro’s same internal expansion architecture, so “the new Mac Pro” is not a claim of like-for-like hardware equivalence. PetaPixel also notes that the 2023 Mac Pro used the same M2 Ultra chip as the Mac Studio of that generation.
What ports and connectivity does the reviewed Ultra configuration have?
PetaPixel describes six Thunderbolt 5 ports on the Ultra configuration: four on the rear and two on the front. It also lists 10Gb Ethernet, USB-A, HDMI 2.1, a headphone jack and an SD card reader. Apple’s announcement confirms Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the new Mac Studio. The port layout here is from PetaPixel’s review; verify the configuration and current specifications with Apple if a particular connector is essential to your setup.
What is the best Mac for video editing?
For most video editors, PetaPixel’s recommendation points to the M5 Max Mac Studio as the more proportionate choice. The M5 Ultra is aimed at workloads where the extra performance has practical value—such as demanding GPU-heavy editing—and where faster processing can justify a substantially higher purchase price. A benchmark advantage alone does not establish that every editor will see a meaningful improvement in their own footage, codec, timeline or export workflow.

That is a vendor claim about peak AI compute, not a general measure of video-editing speed.
