If Spotify pauses as soon as Discord opens, first check whether it also happens when you join voice chat or share your screen. Discord intentionally stops Spotify after sustained microphone transmission in voice chat; a pause on app launch alone is a different problem. On Android, try Spotify’s background-data and battery settings and Discord’s Reduced Motion setting. On Windows, check Spotify’s Exclusive Mode if other apps cannot use the same audio device.
Find the moment Spotify pauses
Note what you were doing when playback stopped: opening Discord, joining a voice channel, transmitting through your microphone, starting Screenshare or Go Live, playing a voice message or video, or opening any app. Also note your device and operating system. These details point to different causes, and a pause on launch is not the same as Discord’s documented voice-transmission rule.

- Only during voice chat or sharing: check Discord’s auto-pause behavior.
- When Discord opens on Android: try the Android-specific checks below.
- On Windows, when another app cannot use your output device: check Spotify Exclusive Mode.
- With several unrelated apps: test Spotify on another device or in the web player.
Reports in Spotify Community describe the app-opening symptom, but they are user reports, not evidence of how often it happens or proof of one universal cause: Android report and another Android report.
Does it happen during Discord voice chat or sharing?
Discord says Spotify stops if you transmit with your microphone in voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing. Its support article also identifies Voice Chat, Screenshare, and Go Live as features where the auto-pause error may appear. Discord gives this behavior as a way to comply with Spotify’s terms for personal and private use. See Discord’s Spotify listening support article.

- Try Push-to-Talk instead of leaving the microphone continuously active.
- If you use voice activity, adjust its sensitivity so background sound is less likely to keep activating the microphone.
- Test again without transmitting. If Spotify only stops after sustained microphone transmission or during sharing, that fits Discord’s documented behavior rather than a pause caused by opening the app alone.
On Android, try the app-opening checks
Android uses audio focus to coordinate playback between apps. Android Developers says an app that gains audio focus can prompt another app to pause, stop, or lower its volume. That makes audio focus one possible explanation for a pause when Discord opens, but it does not establish the cause on a particular phone. Read Android’s audio-focus guidance.
A Spotify Community moderator suggested these symptom-specific checks for Discord-opening reports. They are troubleshooting experiments, not guaranteed fixes. Settings names and locations vary by Android version and phone manufacturer; look under Spotify’s app settings or battery controls if the labels differ. The moderator’s advice appears in this Spotify Community thread.

- Try Reduced Motion in Discord. Open Discord’s User Settings > Accessibility and enable Reduced Motion, if that option is available in your version.
Test after each change so you can tell whether it made a difference. The Community thread also contains reports where unlinking accounts, clearing app data, reinstalling, or restarting did not resolve the issue; no single setting is established as a reliable fix for every Android device.
On Windows, check Spotify Exclusive Mode
Exclusive Mode can prevent other apps from playing through the same audio device while Spotify has exclusive access. If Discord or another app cannot use your selected output, open Spotify Settings > Playback and turn off Exclusive Mode if it is enabled. You can also select a different output device. Spotify explains the setting and its device compatibility in its Exclusive Mode support article.

Test whether the Discord connection matters
If the timing suggests the issue is tied to your linked Spotify account, disconnect the integration temporarily and see whether the symptom changes. In the Spotify desktop app, go to Connections > Spotify > X > Disconnect. Spotify documents the steps in its Discord integration instructions.

Spotify also says Listen Along requires Premium and is unavailable while voice chatting; see Spotify’s Discord instructions.

Reinstalling is another option, but downloaded music and podcasts may need to be downloaded again. Follow Spotify’s playback troubleshooting steps.
Keep song-transition and Listen Along issues separate
If Spotify stops abruptly at a song change during a shared Listen Along session, Discord’s FAQ says crossfade can cause that behavior. The same FAQ says a mobile Listen Along session may end if the device sleeps and a song ends. Those cases concern a shared session or song transition, not Spotify pausing merely because Discord opens. See Discord’s Spotify Auto-Pause FAQ.
