If your phone repeatedly lights up in a pocket, disable the wake feature that matches the trigger: Tap to Wake and Raise to Wake on iPhone, or Double tap to wake and Lift to wake on Samsung Galaxy. Then enable pocket or accidental-touch protection where available. A pocket can provide both the movement and screen contact that wake a phone; repeated wake-ups keep the display and related standby functions active. There is no single gesture switch for every phone, and manufacturers do not publish a universal battery-savings percentage.
Why a phone wakes in your pocket
A wake gesture is designed to make a phone available without pressing the side button. Touch-based features react when the screen is tapped; motion-based features react when the phone is lifted or tilted. In a pocket, fabric, your leg, keys or another object can create screen contact, while walking can repeatedly create the movement interpreted as lifting the phone.

Each wake event can turn on the display, activate lock-screen processing and give notifications an opportunity to illuminate the screen again. If this happens dozens or hundreds of times during a day, the accumulated activity can be noticeable in standby use. The exact impact depends on screen brightness, notification frequency, signal strength, the phone model and how often the pocket triggers it. Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi explain the mechanism, but none of the cited support material establishes a controlled, universal percentage of battery saved by disabling a gesture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe important distinction is that the gesture is normally a wake control, not a battery toggle. Turning it off prevents one class of wake event; it does not stop every notification, background task or battery drain.

Find the wake feature on your platform
| Platform or example | Touch trigger | Motion trigger | Additional pocket control | What changes when disabled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Tap to Wake | Raise to Wake | No equivalent control is named in the cited Apple instructions | You must use the side button or another enabled method to wake the screen |
| Samsung Galaxy | Double tap to wake | Lift to wake | Accidental touch protection | Touch or movement no longer wakes the display through that feature; protection can block dark-pocket touches |
| Other Android examples | Double-tap-to-wake on supported models | Model-specific | Always-on display (AOD) settings may also matter | Standby display activity and the associated convenience are reduced |
Names and locations vary by model, Android or iOS release and region. If a path does not match your phone, open Settings and search for Tap to Wake, Raise to Wake, Lift to wake or Double tap to wake.
Turn off wake gestures on an iPhone
Disable Tap to Wake
Apple’s touch-settings guidance provides this path on supported iPhone models:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Choose Touch.
- Switch Tap to Wake off.
Apple describes this option as preventing touches on the screen from waking the iPhone. The change removes the convenience of tapping the locked display, but it also removes a common way that fabric or an object in a pocket can wake it.
Disable Raise to Wake
To stop movement-based wake events:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Turn Raise to Wake off.
Raise to Wake responds to raising the iPhone, so it is the relevant control when the screen lights as you walk even though nothing is touching it. If you carry the phone in a pocket that moves with your stride, this setting is usually the first motion feature to test.

Choose one or both
Disable only the feature that matches the symptom if you want to retain some convenience. For example, leave Raise to Wake on if you never see touch-triggered wake events, or leave Tap to Wake on if movement is the only problem. If the screen still turns on after one change, turn off the other and observe the phone during a normal day.
Stop a Samsung Galaxy from waking in a pocket
Turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to wake
Samsung’s pocket-wake troubleshooting identifies normal activity in a pocket or bag as a cause of accidental waking and pocket dialing. Its settings path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Choose Motions and gestures.
- Turn off Lift to wake.
- Turn off Double tap to wake.
Lift to wake handles motion; Double tap to wake handles contact. Disabling both removes the two named triggers in Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance. You can test them separately if you want to preserve one shortcut.
Enable Accidental touch protection
Galaxy phones that provide this feature can keep the screen inactive in a dark place, such as a pocket, so accidental touches do not place calls or send messages:

- Tap Display.
- Switch on Accidental touch protection.
This setting is different from disabling a wake gesture. It is a context-based safeguard intended to preserve normal touch use in the open while blocking dark-pocket contacts. The exact behavior and availability can differ by Galaxy model and software version.
Other Android phones: check double tap and the always-on display
Android does not have one universal menu. Xiaomi’s support FAQ, for example, notes that an always-on display (AOD) or double-tap-to-wake can leave part of the screen active for time or notifications and recommends turning those features off when standby pressing increases power use.
On a non-Samsung phone, search Settings for the following terms and test each relevant control:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Double tap to wake or a similar touch-wake label.
- Raise to wake, Lift to wake or another motion-wake label.
- Always-on display or AOD, especially if the screen shows a clock or notification icons while locked.
- Accidental touch protection, Pocket mode or a similarly named proximity safeguard, if the manufacturer supplies one.
Do not assume that an always-on display is the same thing as a full wake. AOD can keep a limited portion of the display active, while a wake gesture can illuminate the entire lock screen. Both can contribute to standby use, but they require different settings.

Decide which feature to sacrifice
| Setting | Trigger it blocks | Convenience you lose | Pocket-safety benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tap to Wake | Screen contact | Waking the phone with a tap | Fabric and objects are less likely to wake the display through a tap |
| Raise/Lift to Wake | Movement interpreted as lifting | Checking the phone by picking it up | Walking with the phone is less likely to create motion wakes |
| Double tap to wake | Two quick touches | Opening the lock screen without a button | Removes a specific repeated-contact trigger |
| Accidental touch protection | Touches while the phone is in a dark place | Little or none during normal open-air use, depending on model | Helps prevent pocket calls and messages while retaining other gestures |
| Always-on display | Not a wake gesture; limits persistent lock-screen activity | At-a-glance time and notification information | Reduces display activity when the phone is stored |
A practical order is to keep accidental-touch protection enabled when available, then disable the motion feature if the phone wakes while walking, and disable the touch feature if contact is the cause. Disable AOD separately when the locked screen remains visibly active.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check if the screen still wakes
Separate a wake gesture from a notification wake
After changing the gesture settings, place the phone in the same pocket and observe what happens. If the screen illuminates only when a notification arrives, the remaining cause is notification behavior rather than Tap to Wake, Raise to Wake, Lift to wake or Double tap to wake. Review which apps are allowed to wake or light the lock screen and reduce unnecessary alerts.
Check touch sensitivity and physical contact
A case edge, screen protector or high touch-sensitivity mode can make unintended contact easier to register. Review the phone’s touch-sensitivity setting if it has one, and test briefly without an accessory that may be pressing the display. This does not replace disabling the wake feature, but it can identify why contact is being detected so often.

Use Safe mode to test third-party software on Galaxy
Samsung recommends Safe mode as a diagnostic step when pocket waking continues. Safe mode starts the phone without third-party apps. If the behavior stops there, an installed app is a likely contributor; remove or reconfigure recently added apps one at a time after returning to normal mode. If the behavior persists in Safe mode with wake gestures disabled, the cause is less likely to be an ordinary third-party app and may require manufacturer support.

Look for partial rather than full wakes
A dim clock or notification icon can indicate AOD, while a bright lock screen indicates a full wake. Treat those as separate symptoms and change the corresponding setting. This distinction prevents you from repeatedly toggling a gesture that was never responsible for the visible activity.
How to judge the battery effect without inventing a percentage
There is no manufacturer-published, universal before-and-after figure for battery saved by disabling a pocket wake gesture. Your result depends on how frequently the pocket causes wakes and how long each display cycle remains active. A phone that rarely wakes may show little change; a phone that repeatedly lights up during a commute can show a clearer reduction in standby consumption.
For a useful personal comparison, make one change at a time, charge to the same level, carry the phone in the same pocket for a comparable period and record the battery percentage and screen-on time shown by the phone. Repeat on another day if conditions differ substantially. Treat the result as your device-and-routine measurement, not a promise for every model.

- Identify whether the trigger is contact, movement, AOD or a notification.
- On iPhone, check Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Tap to Wake.
- On iPhone, check Settings > Display & Brightness > Raise to Wake.
- On Galaxy, check Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and disable Lift to wake and Double tap to wake.
- On Galaxy, enable Settings > Display > Accidental touch protection when available.
- On other Android phones, search Settings for the equivalent wake and AOD labels.
- Review notification wake behavior and touch-sensitivity settings if the display still lights.
- Use Samsung Safe mode when a Galaxy continues waking after the named settings are off.
- Search Settings by feature name when your model’s menu path differs.
The bottom line
There is no universal “one gesture” that drains every phone in a pocket. The fix is to match the setting to the trigger: disable Tap to Wake or Raise to Wake on iPhone, disable Double tap to wake or Lift to wake on Galaxy, and use accidental-touch protection or AOD controls where your Android model provides them. These changes remove specific wake paths and may reduce standby drain, but the amount saved is personal and cannot be stated as a fixed percentage.
