There isn’t one universal Gmail switch that guarantees every important message will trigger an alert. Check Gmail’s notification level and the separate notification permission on your phone or computer. On Android, also confirm Gmail sync is on; if alerts are for a particular label, make sure that label is synced.
Start with the setting for your device
Gmail’s in-app notification choice and your device’s notification permission are separate controls. Use the path for the device where alerts are missing, then check the relevant sync, label, browser, or category setting below.

Android
- In Gmail, tap Menu → Settings and select the affected account.
- Tap Email notifications and choose the level you want. Gmail’s default notifications cover messages in the Primary label; High priority only is narrower and may leave other new messages silent.
- In Gmail’s general settings, open Manage notifications and make sure Gmail notifications are allowed by Android. You can also check the phone’s Settings app for Gmail’s notification permission; Android’s controls are separate from Gmail’s.
- Return to the account’s settings and make sure Sync Gmail is checked. With sync off, Gmail requires a manual refresh to retrieve new mail.
Google’s Android notification instructions cover notification levels, sync, and troubleshooting.

Desktop web
- In Gmail, open Settings → See all settings → Desktop notifications.
- Select New mail notifications on for Primary-category new mail, or Important mail notifications on for messages Gmail classifies as important. Select Mail notifications off to disable them.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes.
- If alerts still do not appear, allow notifications for Gmail in your browser and check your computer’s operating-system notification settings.
Google documents desktop notifications in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari when you are signed in and have Gmail open. See the desktop notification instructions for the current steps.
For Android, check label sync when only some mail is silent
If you expect alerts for a label other than the general inbox, its messages need to be synchronized and notifications enabled for that label. In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → select the account → Manage labels → select the label. Set Sync messages to Last 30 days or All, then configure that label’s notification settings. Google says an unsynchronized label cannot send notifications.

Primary is not every inbox category
When Gmail categories are enabled, the desktop New mail notifications on option covers Primary-category messages. Mail routed to Promotions, Updates, Social, or Forums may therefore not produce that new-mail alert. If you want alerts for a broader set, consider whether the important-mail option better matches your needs, and check Gmail’s notification guidance before changing inbox organization. Google explains categories in its category help.

Important-only alerts trade fewer interruptions for narrower coverage
Gmail uses signals such as whom you email and how often, which messages you open or reply to, and which you star, archive, or delete to classify importance. If you use important-only notifications, a message Gmail does not classify as important may not trigger the alert you selected. You can click an importance marker to correct Gmail’s classification, but that does not promise immediate or perfect sorting. See Google’s importance marker explanation.
Inbox layout helps you find mail, but does not control alerts
Gmail offers Default, Important first, Unread first, Starred first, Priority Inbox, and Multiple Inboxes on desktop. Priority Inbox can display sections such as Important and unread, Starred, Everything else, or a chosen label. These layouts organize what you see in the inbox; they do not guarantee that a push or desktop notification will appear. Google lists the available layouts in its computer inbox layout guide.

If notifications still do not arrive
- Nothing arrives on Android: check Android’s Gmail notification permission, Gmail’s account notification level, and Sync Gmail. For label-specific alerts, check that label’s sync and notification settings. If you still don’t get notifications, Google recommends its Gmail sync troubleshooting guidance.
- Nothing arrives on iPhone or iPad: check both the device’s Gmail notification permission and the notification level for the affected account in Gmail.
- Nothing arrives on desktop: check Gmail’s Desktop notifications setting, browser permission, and operating-system notification controls. Keep Gmail open in a supported browser for Google’s documented desktop notification behavior.
- Only some messages are silent: check whether the chosen level is important-only, whether the message is outside Primary on desktop, or—on Android—whether the relevant label is synchronized and configured to notify.
Google’s notification setup guide provides platform-specific instructions for Android, iOS, and desktop.
