Four DIY boards offer more headline compute hardware than the Raspberry Pi 5: Radxa ROCK 5B, Orange Pi 5 Plus, Orange Pi 5 Pro and Radxa ROCK 5A. Each uses a Rockchip processor with four Cortex-A76 cores, four Cortex-A55 cores and a vendor-rated NPU of up to 6 TOPS. Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A76 CPU, so the alternatives add cores and dedicated AI hardware—but that does not prove they will run every program faster. Choose by workload, software support, memory, storage and board features, not core count alone.
What “more powerful” means here
The Raspberry Pi 5 uses a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, according to Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch announcement. The four boards below pair four Cortex-A76 cores with four Cortex-A55 cores; their manufacturers also specify Mali-G610-family graphics and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. Those are meaningful hardware differences, especially for software that can use multiple CPU cores or an NPU.

They are not a universal performance ranking. Core counts do not show how quickly a particular application runs, and an NPU’s TOPS rating is not a direct measure of AI application speed. Runtime and driver support, model precision, memory, cooling and configuration all matter. The available third-party Geekbench 6 comparison covers Raspberry Pi 5, Orange Pi 5B and ROCK 5B, not all four boards in one matched test. It cannot establish a complete ranking of these candidates.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which one should you choose?
Pick ROCK 5B for documented memory and display options
ROCK 5B is worth considering when a project may benefit from a listed memory configuration as large as 32 GB or multiple display outputs. Those features do not by themselves make it faster than the other boards in a particular application; confirm the exact model and required connections in Radxa’s documentation.
Pick Orange Pi 5 Plus for its listed OS choices and eMMC socket
The Orange Pi 5 Plus manufacturer page lists Orange Pi OS, Android, Debian and Ubuntu, alongside an eMMC socket and 4/8/16 GB memory configurations. If a particular operating system or onboard storage matters, check that the image and drivers you need are available and supported for your intended use.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Pick Orange Pi 5 Pro if its M.2 SSD interface fits
The manual documents an M.2 M-key PCIe 2.0 x1 SSD slot and 4/8/16 GB LPDDR5 options. That makes the board a candidate when an M.2 drive is part of the design, but the interface is PCIe 2.0 x1; do not assume another board’s slot or SSD compatibility is identical.

Consider ROCK 5A when compactness matters
ROCK 5A shares the A76/A55 CPU arrangement and a 6 TOPS-rated NPU, in a compact board option. The cited documentation does not establish a complete connectivity comparison with the other candidates, so check its board details before designing around a particular port or storage device.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Check the whole platform before buying
A board is useful only if its software and interfaces fit the job. Compare the following for the exact board revision and configuration you intend to use:
- Workload and CPU: Determine whether the application benefits from multiple cores. The additional Cortex-A55 cores suggest more multicore capacity, but a matched benchmark or test of your own application is needed to predict real performance.
- AI software: Confirm that the framework, runtime, model format and precision you need can use the board’s NPU. The up-to-6-TOPS figure is a vendor specification, not an independent result for a particular model.
- Graphics: Check operating-system and driver support for the graphics workload you plan to run; a GPU model name alone does not establish application compatibility or speed.
- Memory and storage: Verify the chosen RAM configuration and whether the board supports your preferred microSD, eMMC or M.2 storage. Slot type and PCIe lane details differ by model.
- Connectivity and displays: Compare the exact ports and connectors needed for networking, cameras, screens and peripherals rather than relying on a shared processor family.
- Power and cooling: Follow the selected board’s requirements and allow for the cooling needed by its workload. Power and thermal conditions affect sustained operation.
- Operating system and maintenance: Check current images, drivers and documentation for your chosen board. Raspberry Pi 5 has first-party Raspberry Pi OS; alternatives list different OS options, and support can vary by board and software release.
Why these boards are alternatives, not four separate processor leaps
ROCK 5B and Orange Pi 5 Plus use the RK3588 family, while Orange Pi 5 Pro uses RK3588S. ROCK 5A also lists the A76/A55 architecture and Mali-G610 MP4 graphics. Their shared CPU and NPU features make them plausible Raspberry Pi 5 alternatives, but much of the practical distinction is in board layout, memory choices, storage and I/O—not four unrelated breakthroughs in processor design.

- Broad Compatible: The usb c to usb adapter widely supports all USB C/ USB A devices like laptops, tablets, cellphones, car chargers, and phone chargers. Such as compatible with MacBook Pro/Air 2023/2022, Thunderbolt 4/3 Devices,Apple MagSafe Watch 9/8/7/SE/Ultra, iPad Pro 2022/2021, Samsung Galaxy S23/S20/S10, and iPhone 17/16/15 Pro. Plug and play
- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a project that depends on predictable application performance, compare the specific software stack and configuration rather than treating the processor specifications as a benchmark. The documented hardware supports a claim of more CPU cores and dedicated NPU hardware than Raspberry Pi 5’s cited quad-core CPU; it does not support a claim that every board will outperform the Pi 5 in every task.
