If Microsoft Edge keeps putting an icon on your desktop, first identify what the icon opens. An ordinary Edge browser shortcut, an Edge-installed website app, and a work-profile shortcut can have different causes. For an installed app, manage it in Edge at edge://apps; for a shortcut that returns after Edge restarts or on a managed PC, the cause may require an Edge Update policy review. Deleting the icon alone may not stop the setting or app that recreates it.
Identify which Edge shortcut is returning
Check the shortcut’s label and destination. Does it open the Edge browser itself, a particular website or app, or a work profile? Also note when it comes back: after you reopen Edge, after an app is installed, or after signing in to Windows. Those details help distinguish the likely source.

- Website or app name: Check whether it is an app installed through Edge.
- “Work – Edge” or a similar work-profile label: The shortcut may be tied to an Edge work profile. A 2023 Microsoft Community thread documents a shortcut with this label that returned after deletion and reopening Edge; that report does not establish the cause of every current recurrence. Read the Microsoft Community thread.
- Edge browser icon created around an installation: On a work-managed PC, an Edge Update policy may control shortcut creation.
If you are unsure, right-click the shortcut and inspect its properties or choose its file location, if available. Do not delete the underlying app or profile just because you want to remove its desktop icon.

Microsoft’s documented route for managing Edge-installed apps is the browser’s apps page. You can keep the app and remove its desktop shortcut, or uninstall an app you no longer use.

- Open Microsoft Edge and enter
edge://appsin the address bar. - Find the app associated with the desktop icon and select Details on its card.
- If you want to keep the app, use its details to manage its desktop shortcut and remove the unwanted icon from the desktop.
- If you no longer want the app, select its uninstall option, then remove any remaining desktop shortcut.
The same Details page includes options to create a desktop shortcut or pin the app to Start or the taskbar. The available controls may vary with the app. Microsoft’s instructions for installing, managing, or uninstalling Edge apps explain the process.
When an Edge browser shortcut keeps coming back
If the icon is for Edge itself rather than an installed site app, and it reappears after deletion or Edge restarts, deleting the visible shortcut may not change what is creating it. On a work or school computer, contact the administrator and ask them to check the current Microsoft Edge Update policy documentation and the policies deployed to the device. Microsoft’s policy reference describes controls for creating desktop shortcuts on installation, including a separate channel policy, but exact policy names, scope, and deployment settings should be verified against the current documentation before changes are made. See Microsoft Edge Update policy documentation.

A Microsoft Community response also names a policy called Prevent Desktop Shortcut creation upon install. Treat that forum guidance as context rather than implementation instructions: an administrator should confirm the current policy reference and deployment configuration before applying a change.
What about a “Work – Edge” shortcut?
In a Microsoft Community thread about a “Work – Edge” icon returning after deletion, Microsoft staff reported on August 29, 2023 that a fix had been released in Edge Beta 117.0.2045.12 and was expected in the next Stable release later that week. This is a historical account of that reported issue, not proof that a current recurrence has the same cause. Check the installed Edge version and whether the device is managed before deciding what to troubleshoot.

If Edge opens at Windows sign-in instead
An Edge window opening automatically when you sign in is different from a desktop shortcut being created. Microsoft’s instructions for changing whether Edge restarts at sign-in point to Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. That setting addresses startup behavior; Microsoft does not document it as a control for preventing desktop shortcuts. See Microsoft’s instructions for stopping Edge from starting automatically.
