PiP can work without a paid membership for eligible content; screen-off playback generally requires an eligible YouTube membership and account in a supported location. Set up the feature that matches what you want.
Choose the kind of background playback you need

How to use picture-in-picture on a Samsung phone
For PiP, enable the permission in Android settings and the control in YouTube. The exact wording or location of menus can vary by Galaxy model, One UI version, Android version, and app version.

- Open Advanced > Picture-in-picture and turn on Allow picture-in-picture.
- Open YouTube and go to Settings > Playback. Turn on Picture-in-picture.
- Start an eligible video, then return to the Home screen using the Home button or system gesture. The video should shrink into a movable floating window.
If you cannot find the Android control, search Settings for “picture-in-picture,” then check YouTube’s Playback setting as well. YouTube documents the Android and in-app controls in its PiP instructions for Android.

Which videos can use PiP?
Availability is not identical for every video or account. YouTube’s help page distinguishes non-music videos from music content, for which PiP is identified as a Premium benefit. TeamYouTube announced a global expansion of PiP for long-form non-music video on April 29, 2026, and updated that announcement on June 4, 2026 to address non-music Shorts. The announcement does not make every content type or account universally eligible; check the current behavior on your account and in your location. Read TeamYouTube’s PiP rollout announcement.
How to keep YouTube playing after you lock the screen
Screen-off background play is a separate feature from PiP. YouTube says playback in its mobile apps requires signing into the account associated with an eligible YouTube Premium membership in a supported location. Some videos may not be available for background play even with a membership.

- In the YouTube app, sign in to the account with the qualifying membership.
- Open Settings > Background & Downloads > Background Play.
- Select Always on to allow background play generally, or Headphones or external speakers to allow it under that condition.
- Start a video and lock the phone to check that playback continues.
The setting may also offer Off. The available labels can change with the app version. YouTube’s Premium benefits page describes membership and background-play requirements.
Premium Lite availability is conditional
TeamYouTube announced background play for most videos for Premium Lite on March 2, 2026, with a regional update on April 9, 2026. The announcement excludes Shorts and music-related content and describes a rollout, so Premium Lite eligibility is not universal across accounts and locations. Fix YouTube background play that stops
If playback stops when you lock the phone, work through these checks:
- Confirm the account and membership: Make sure YouTube is signed in to the account with the eligible membership and that it remains active.
- Check the feature setting: In Settings > Background & Downloads > Background Play, confirm that playback is not set to Off and that the selected condition matches how you are listening.
- Check the video: Some videos are unavailable for background play even for members. Shorts and music-related content are also excluded from the Premium Lite background-play announcement.
- Check for competing audio: Another app playing audio can interrupt YouTube.
- Check connectivity and background access: Confirm the internet connection and that YouTube can use background data. Review notification settings if you need playback controls or status notifications.
- Update and restart: Update the YouTube app, then restart it or the phone if playback still fails.

Fix picture-in-picture that does not appear
- Verify that Allow picture-in-picture is enabled for YouTube in Android settings.
- Verify that Picture-in-picture is enabled under YouTube’s Settings > Playback.
- Try another eligible video, since content type and account eligibility can affect PiP.
- Update YouTube and try leaving the app again using Home or the system gesture.
