Stop tacking the current year and an exclamation mark onto your passwords. That predictable suffix is not a substitute for a long, unique password. For accounts that still require passwords, use a password manager to generate and store a different one for each account. If you need to remember a password, make it a long passphrase; turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) or use a passkey where available.
Why “!2026” is not a useful password upgrade
Appending a familiar symbol and the current year may satisfy a website’s character rules, but it does not make a reused or otherwise weak password meaningfully unique. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) warns that people tend to meet composition rules with predictable shortcuts, such as adding an exclamation mark to a memorized secret. NIST does not publish a statistic for how common or how quickly attackers crack the exact “!2026” ending; the practical point is to avoid a pattern attackers can anticipate.

Current NIST implementation guidance says systems within the scope of its digital identity standard should not impose character-composition rules or require routine periodic password changes. Those requirements do not mean every consumer website follows the standard. For you, the useful takeaway is not to change a password simply because the calendar changed: replace it when you have evidence it was compromised or another account-specific reason to do so.
What to use instead
Use a unique password for every account
If the service requires a password, make it different from the passwords you use elsewhere. Reuse means one exposed password can put multiple accounts at risk. A password manager can generate and store separate credentials so you do not have to memorize each one. Choose one that supports MFA, and protect its vault with a long master passphrase and MFA when available. A manager is helpful, but its vault is valuable and still needs protection.

Make a memorable password a long passphrase
If you need to remember a password yourself, use a long passphrase made from multiple words rather than a short password decorated with a predictable suffix. NIST’s consumer guidance recommends at least 15 characters when creating a password. That is consumer advice, not a universal rule for every website; the NIST standard’s 15-character minimum applies to single-factor AAL1 passwords for verifiers within its scope.
NIST offers an illustrative estimate of more than 500 years to exhaustively guess every possible 15-character lowercase combination at an assumed rate of 100 billion guesses per second. Treat that as an illustration of the size of a search space, not a guarantee: real-world risk also depends on factors such as whether a password is reused, how it is stored, and whether an attacker can make guesses without being rate-limited.

Use a passkey or add MFA when available
A passkey is a practical alternative if the service offers one. NIST describes passkeys as different for each login, held on a device, and not requiring memorization. As NIST puts it, “Unlike passwords, passkeys can’t be easily stolen through phishing and don’t require memorization.” This is from its “How Do I Create a Good Password?” page, updated August 20, 2025.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you continue using a password, MFA adds another verification step. Available methods vary by account and can include a USB security key, authenticator app, push notification, or text code; these options are not equally secure, and not every service supports all of them. Use a method the account offers that fits your needs.

A quick decision guide
| What the account supports | What to do |
|---|---|
| Passkeys | Use a passkey if it suits your setup; it avoids memorizing a password and is designed to resist phishing. |
| Password required, manager available | Generate a unique password for the account and save it in a password manager protected with a long master passphrase and MFA when available. |
| Password required, must remember it | Choose a long passphrase of multiple words, aiming for at least 15 characters. |
| MFA offered | Enable an available MFA method; select a stronger compatible option when you can. |
What NIST’s current guidance means for passwords
NIST’s 2025 consumer guidance recommends password managers for accounts that require passwords, unique passwords, and passkeys where supported. Its SP 800-63-4 implementation FAQ specifies a 15-character minimum for single-factor AAL1 passwords, says composition rules are not to be used, says routine periodic password changes are not to be required, and says verifiers must allow password managers and autofill. These are requirements for systems within the standard’s scope, not a promise about every website you use.
