Liang’s comparison captures the game’s central image: a skilled assassin fighting through a stylized Chinese setting. In an interview with Inverse, he said, “You can easily see this as something like John Wick set in 16th-century China.” That is a description of its cinematic assassin fantasy, not confirmation that the game is officially set in a particular historical period or belongs to a specific genre.

The Dark Souls comparison points to exploration and world design rather than a claim that every part of the combat follows the Souls formula. Liang also named Devil May Cry as an influence on combat and Resident Evil as an influence on cinematic, emotional storytelling. What the gameplay preview says
Inverse’s Hayes Madsen reported playing for an hour. In that hands-on preview, the protagonist, Soul, is described as an assassin opposing the organization that controls him. Madsen’s account presents the gameplay as a mix of weapon combos, parries, dodges, weapon-specific moves, exploration, and boss encounters. These are preview impressions, not results from independent testing.

Combat tempo and combos
The preview describes fast, combo-based action. That makes the game’s action side closer to spectacle-driven character action than the phrase “Souls-like” alone might imply. How freely players can build or vary combos in the full release is not established by the preview.
Defensive timing
Parries and dodges are part of the reported combat, so attacking is not the only demand: players also need to respond to enemy attacks. The preview does not establish how punishing missed timings are or whether combat difficulty can be adjusted.

Weapons and exploration
Madsen reports weapon-specific moves and exploration between major boss encounters. That offers two useful ways to judge the eventual game: how much its weapons change the feel of combat, and how much time the world gives players between major fights. The one-hour preview does not settle either question for the full game.
Release date and platform
As of October 7, 2026, PlayStation’s official US listing gives Phantom Blade Zero a PS5 release date of October 29, 2026. S-GAME’s official Steam announcement says the launch moved to October 29 from September 9, 2026. Because release dates can change, check the official listing close to launch.
