Those documents determine which memory generation, drive type and size the system supports, how many slots or bays are available, and whether you need mounting hardware. An M.2 connector or an open-looking memory slot alone does not prove a part is compatible.
Identify your PC and check its upgrade limits
Find the prebuilt’s exact model or service tag on its case, system information screen, or purchase records. If the manufacturer’s documentation identifies the motherboard model as well, use it to help verify component support. Look up the system’s official specifications and maintenance instructions; generic parts lists cannot establish what a particular prebuilt supports.

- Storage: supported interface and protocol, M.2 drive lengths and keying where applicable, available M.2 slots or 2.5-inch bays, and any shared-connector restrictions.
- Hardware: whether installation requires a screw, carrier, SATA data cable, thermal plate, or another model-specific part.
- Purpose: whether you want a second drive for files and games or plan to replace the boot drive.
Dell’s RAM compatibility guidance and HP’s RAM upgrade guidance direct buyers to system-specific support information. Dell warns that unsupported memory can damage a module or slot. A compatibility selector such as Crucial’s upgrade selector can help identify candidate parts, but confirm the result against your computer’s documentation.

- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Choose RAM that matches the prebuilt
Gaming desktops generally use full-size DIMMs; laptops use the smaller SODIMM form factor. Dell states that distinction in its memory guidance. For a desktop, do not order laptop SODIMMs. Also confirm the supported DDR generation, capacity, speed, slot count, and recommended configuration for the exact PC. Do not assume that a stick will work simply because its capacity or physical appearance seems right.
Check whether you can add modules to open slots or whether you need to replace the installed kit to reach the supported capacity. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions about which slots to populate; the recommended order may matter. For example, Lenovo’s P330 2nd Gen Tower instructions specify an installation order for that model. That order should not be treated as universal for other PCs.

- [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
- [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
- [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
- [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
- [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).
Choose an SSD by interface, protocol, and fit
M.2 describes a drive’s physical form factor, not a guarantee that it will work in every M.2 slot. Confirm the slot’s supported protocol—such as NVMe over PCIe or SATA—plus PCIe generation where relevant, drive length, keying, and any system-specific restrictions. Dell’s M.2 compatibility guidance likewise calls out PCIe generation, physical size, and keying. Check the individual PC’s documentation rather than using an M.2 label as the only compatibility test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a different installation path. It needs a supported SATA connection and a usable bay; depending on what the prebuilt includes, you may also need a SATA data cable or mounting carrier. By contrast, an M.2 drive installs into a compatible motherboard slot and may require a retention screw or other model-specific hardware. The PC’s specifications and maintenance guide should establish which route is available and what parts are needed.

Decide whether to add storage or replace the boot drive
Adding a secondary SSD
A second drive can provide space for games and files without replacing the current boot drive, if the PC has a compatible open slot or bay and the required connections and mounting parts. Crucial’s SSD installation guide illustrates a secondary 2.5-inch SATA drive connected to a motherboard SATA port with a cable. Your particular PC may use different hardware or have different installation requirements, so follow its manual.
Replacing the boot drive
Replacing the drive that holds the operating system requires a plan for the data and the operating system as well as physical installation. Decide how you will back up or transfer files and how you will migrate or reinstall the operating system before removing the original drive. The correct process depends on the system and your chosen approach; there is no single procedure established for every prebuilt.

Install the part using the model’s instructions
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance guide for the case-opening procedure, component location, orientation, slot order, and retention hardware. A cautious general sequence is:
- Shut down the PC, disconnect its power and peripherals, and prepare the case as directed by the manufacturer.
- Locate the specified memory slots, M.2 connector, or SATA bay and connection.
- Install the component in the orientation and location shown in the system instructions.
- Secure any required clips, screw, carrier, cable, or thermal plate.
- Close the case, reconnect the system, and check that the new component is detected.
This is a high-level outline, not a substitute for model-specific instructions: chassis designs and motherboard layouts vary. For example, Lenovo provides separate upgrade guidance for Legion desktops.

Set expectations for performance
There is no universal RAM capacity or guaranteed frame-rate increase for every gaming PC. The effect of an upgrade depends on the original computer or motherboard and the selected component, as Crucial’s selector notes. Choose a supported upgrade for the issue you want to address—such as limited memory capacity or storage space—rather than assuming any RAM or SSD change will produce the same gaming benefit.
