Multicolor FDM printers do not all work the same way, and their filament use, setup, and purge handling vary with the hardware and print. Before buying, find out whether a machine changes filament through one shared nozzle or uses multiple tools, where purge material goes, and whether its workflow fits the models you plan to make. The five myths below separate what the sources establish from what they do not.
Myth 1: Every multicolor printer makes the same pile of waste
“Multicolor printer” describes more than one hardware approach. In a single-nozzle system, filaments are switched through a shared hotend. Because some of the previous color remains in the hotend, the printer must manage that residual material to limit color contamination. Bambu Lab explains purging in its AMS overview; Prusa describes filament unloading and purging for the MMU3.

A multi-tool machine takes a different approach. Prusa says its XL can print multi-material jobs without a purge or wipe tower in a documented workflow. That does not make all architectures equivalent, or establish that every job on the XL has no waste. The key difference is how the printer changes material and handles what remains—not a single universal “multicolor” waste profile.

What to compare
- Architecture: shared nozzle with filament switching, or multiple tools.
- Purge destination: a separate tower, infill, another object, or a workflow that avoids a tower in specified circumstances.
- Your models: how often colors change and how those changes are distributed through the print.
Myth 2: Multicolor printing always wastes more filament than the finished object uses
There is no general waste-to-object ratio established by the cited sources. In filament-switching systems, the amount to purge depends on the print’s color changes and the configured purge workflow. Prusa’s MMU3 slicing guidance covers smart wipe-tower behavior and purge management; its purge-volume guidance explains that extruded filament can transition gradually between colors and that purge volume is configurable.

Those mechanisms explain why two jobs can behave differently; they do not establish a typical percentage or prove a universal saving. A model that switches colors frequently may present a different purge workload from one with fewer changes. To estimate materials for your own use, inspect the slicer’s estimate for the specific model, printer profile, and settings rather than applying a blanket ratio.
Myth 3: There is no way to reuse or reduce purge material
Some slicers let you direct purge filament into infill or another selected object instead of sending all of it to a separate tower. Prusa documents options to manage purge material in MMU3 slicing, and describes wipe-to-object and wipe-to-infill in its MMU3 launch and update article.

This can reduce the material assigned to a separate tower, but it is not a guarantee that purge disappears or that every model is a suitable destination. Whether the option works for a particular print depends on the model, slicer settings, and appearance requirements: purge material placed in a visible or functional part of an object may not be acceptable for that use.
Myth 4: A purge tower is unavoidable
Prusa’s XL multi-material printing guidance says the printer can handle multi-material jobs without a purge or wipe tower. That is a documented XL workflow, not a promise that every printer or every print can do the same. Prusa also advises using dry filament and checking the print when trying the tower-free mode.

- Multicolor 3D Printing: 4 × CFS for up to 16 colors. By hooking up as many as four CFS units together, you are able to print in the splendor of 16 colors. Saves the need for extra painting afterward. Also, K2 offers a build volume of 260 × 260 × 260 mm, able to cover the majority of user scenarios. (* K2 Combo includes K2 and one CFS unit)
- Ultra Quiet Printing: Silent Mode for a quieter printing experience. Annoyed by the buzzing noise? Not K2. By adopting step-servo motors and dynamically balanced fans. It is no louder than someone typing on a laptop PC
- Out-of-the-Box Experience: Pre-assembled for plug and play. You can use K2 right after unpacking and screen installation. Unlocks a wider selection of materials, including PLA/PETG/ABS/PLA-CF/PET
- Smart Auto Leveling & AI Camera: Faster leveling of only the target print area. The leveling sensor only probes and levels the bed area relevant to the desired print. Much faster and more precise. Close watch around the clock, Watch over spaghetti failure, idling, and so on in real-time
- Superior Print Quality: Sturdy frame and precise step-servo motor system. K2 uses 3 step-servo motors, both in the extruder and on the X/Y axis. They can adjust torque dynamically in less than a millisecond, taking the speed, extrusion consistency, print accuracy and noise control to the next level
When comparing printers, check whether tower-free printing is supported for the specific architecture and workflow you intend to use, and what operating cautions apply. “No tower” does not, by itself, establish zero purge material or zero waste.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Myth 5: Any multicolor printer is plug-and-play, with no extra workflow
In a single-nozzle filament-switching system, the printer has to unload one filament, load another, and purge between changes. Slicer settings and material choices also affect the resulting print. Prusa’s MMU3 product information describes its filament-change workflow, while its slicing guidance explains relevant purge settings.

That is extra workflow to understand, not evidence of a particular failure rate. The cited product and support material documents steps and cautions, but does not provide comparative reliability statistics for current multicolor printers. Before buying, check setup and operating instructions for the exact printer and slicer combination, including any material-drying or monitoring guidance.

The cited sources do not provide matched tests establishing a general time penalty or speed ranking across current printer architectures. A printer’s material-change steps are part of its workflow, but that alone is not enough to predict the total time for your model. Compare slicer time estimates for the same model and settings on the specific machines you are considering; treat them as estimates, not as a universal result for multicolor printing.
Do I need an AMS or MMU?
Not necessarily. AMS and MMU refer to particular filament-handling systems, not a requirement for every multicolor printer. Prusa describes the MMU3 as an optional upgrade for compatible printers on its product page. Other machines use different approaches, including multiple tools. Check compatibility with your existing printer and whether the system’s color-change and purge workflow suits the models you want to print.
How to choose based on the prints you actually want to make
- Identify the architecture. Confirm whether the printer switches filaments through a shared nozzle or uses multiple tools. Do not assume that features or waste behavior from one approach carry over to another.
- Check purge controls and destinations. Look for the slicer’s purge-volume settings and whether it supports a tower, infill, another object, or a documented tower-free workflow.
- Consider color-change patterns. Examine representative models in the slicer. The number and pattern of changes affect the purge workflow, so a generic claim about waste may not describe your prints.
- Review setup and operation. Read instructions for filament changes, material preparation, and monitoring. Confirm that the workflow is manageable for you.
- Verify compatibility. If you plan to upgrade an existing printer, check the manufacturer’s compatible-printer list and current product information before buying.
There is no cited, matched comparison here that establishes a current best model, universal waste quantity, speed difference, or reliability ranking. Base the decision on the architecture, slicer controls, and workflow for your own intended prints.
