Best Cheap VPN Services for 2026: Price, Renewal and Privacy Compared

The cheapest-looking VPN is usually the one with the lowest monthly equivalent on a multi-year plan, and that figure only becomes real once you have paid the first term and checked what renewal costs. Surfshark appears in more of the 2026 comparisons behind this guide than any other provider, and Tom’s Guide names it its best cheap VPN, but its low headline price depends on a long-term offer.

Four services recur across those comparisons: Surfshark, Proton VPN, Mullvad and PrivadoVPN. Taken together, the 2026 comparisons do not add up to a complete five-provider ranking, so this guide covers those four and does not assign numbered places. Every figure is attributed to the publisher that reported it. This page runs no speed tests or price checks of its own, so treat each number as a dated report to confirm at checkout.

Compare the total you pay, not the monthly figure

Cheap VPN pricing is usually built around a term. The advertised per-month number is the total charge divided by the months in that term, so it can sit well below what is billed at checkout. Tom’s Guide’s cheap-VPN guide gives examples that separate the advertised per-month figure from the total paid upfront, which is the comparison to make before buying (Tom’s Guide, The best cheap VPN in 2026).

Surfshark shows the gap clearly. TechRadar reports its long-term offer from $2.19 per month, and Tom’s Guide reports its one-month plan at over $16 (TechRadar, The best cheap VPN services in 2026; Tom’s Guide, The cheapest monthly VPN plans in 2026). The 2026 coverage does not state the term length or renewal price for the $2.19 offer, so the table below uses a hypothetical 24-month period to show the arithmetic only.

Both figures are offer-specific. A monthly equivalent is only valid for the plan, market and purchase channel it was reported for.

Surfshark: the price depends on the term

Surfshark’s headline figure is the reason it appears so often in these comparisons, and it is also the reason to read the offer terms closely. RTINGS pairs its cheap long-term recommendation with a privacy tradeoff, and its summary is the place to start before deciding whether that tradeoff matters for you (RTINGS, The 3 Best Cheap VPNs of 2026). The second audit is only useful once you know who performed it and what it covered. The summaries available here do not name the auditor or the scope, so open the report itself.

Proton VPN: a no-logs label with exceptions

An exception-bearing policy is a starting point, not the whole answer. Read Proton VPN’s current privacy policy for the exact conditions, and decide whether they fit how you plan to use the service. Do not rely on a reviewer’s paraphrase for the wording.

Mullvad: included, but with little reported detail

Mullvad’s place in this set rests on a single inclusion in RTINGS’ 2026 roundup (RTINGS, The 3 Best Cheap VPNs of 2026). Pricing, device limits, refund terms and audit status need to come from Mullvad’s own pages rather than from the comparison.

PrivadoVPN: an audit gap at the time of reporting

The Tom’s Guide observation is a snapshot of one article’s publication date (Tom’s Guide, The cheapest monthly VPN plans in 2026). Treat the absence of an audit as the status at that time, and check the provider’s current audit page for anything published since.

What a no-logs claim and an audit each establish

A no-logs policy is a company’s statement about what it keeps. An audit is an outside check of whether specific claims hold, within a defined scope, on a particular date. They answer different questions, and a cheap plan can have either, both or neither. For each provider you consider, record the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Auditor: who performed the review, and whether the full report is published or only a summary.
  • Date: when the audit was carried out. An older audit may not reflect the apps and servers you use today.
  • Scope: whether it covered the privacy policy, the apps, the server infrastructure, or only some of these. Tom’s Guide’s PrivadoVPN observation lists all three separately, which is how the scope should be read.
  • Exceptions: any conditions under which the policy allows data to be retained or disclosed, including abuse and terms-of-service cases.

Speed and streaming depend on test conditions

Security.org’s broader VPN tests ran ten Ookla Speedtest runs per provider, split between nearby and distant servers, and compared plan prices and features (Security.org, Best Cheap VPNs of 2026; Security.org, The Best VPN Services in 2026). That is Security.org’s method, not a test run for this guide. The coverage cited here does not give comparable speed or streaming figures for the four services above.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

The nearby-and-distant split matters because it separates two effects. A nearby server mostly shows the overhead of the VPN itself, while a distant server adds the length of the route. If you mainly connect to a server in your own country, the nearby result is closer to daily experience. If you need a server abroad, weight the distant result more heavily.

Streaming is a separate question. A speed test does not show whether a service reaches a particular platform from a particular country. Look for a streaming test that names the service, the server location and the test date.

Features that decide whether a cheap plan is usable

TechRadar recommends checking the no-logs policy, kill switch, encryption and protocol support before choosing a plan (TechRadar, The best cheap VPN services in 2026). Beyond those, check the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Kill switch: blocks internet traffic when the VPN connection drops, so your ordinary connection is not exposed. Confirm the setting exists in the app for your platform, then test it by briefly disabling the VPN and checking that traffic stops.
  • Protocol support: check which protocols the app offers, such as WireGuard or OpenVPN, and which one is active in the settings.
  • Encryption: prefer a provider that names its encryption standard in its documentation over a general claim.
  • Device limit: confirm that the plan covers every device you plan to use. The table above shows which limits were reported.

Checkout checklist before you pay

  1. Multiply the offer’s monthly price by the number of months in its term, and compare that total with the amount shown as due today.
  2. Find the renewal price and the date it starts. A long-term rate may apply only to the first term.
  3. Confirm the refund window and its conditions for the exact plan, market and purchase channel you use. A published guarantee does not guarantee eligibility for every purchase path.
  4. Read the current privacy policy for exceptions, and locate the latest audit report to check its date and scope against the list above.
  5. Note how cancellation works, and whether cancelling stops renewal immediately or at the end of the paid term.

The Bottom Line

If the lowest per-month figure matters most and you can commit to a long term, Surfshark is the option that appears most consistently in 2026 coverage, but its price is only the real price once the term, renewal and refund conditions are confirmed. For Proton VPN and PrivadoVPN, privacy evidence should be checked before price. Mullvad needs its own pricing and policy review, because the coverage cited here does not report its figures.
