Stocks vs. Treasury Bonds During High Inflation: Which Is Safer?

There is no universal winner. Nominal U.S. Treasury bonds have the clearest contractual repayment safety, but their fixed dollars can lose purchasing power when inflation rises unexpectedly. TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) directly adjust principal with CPI-U, while stocks may deliver stronger long-run real growth but can be highly volatile and can fall alongside bonds during some inflation shocks.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “safe”: avoiding default, limiting short-term price swings, or preserving what your money can buy. Your spending date and holding period matter as much as the asset label.

“Safe” means three different things

Investors often use one word for three separate risks. Separating them prevents a bond that is safe in one sense from being mistaken for a safe choice in another.

1. Default and repayment safety

Treasury bills, notes, bonds and TIPS are obligations of the U.S. government. If held to maturity, they promise scheduled interest (where applicable) and repayment under their terms. Stocks are residual claims on companies: shareholders are paid after creditors and have no promised return of principal.

2. Short-term price stability

A Treasury security can lose market value before maturity. When market yields rise, existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall in price; the longer the maturity, the greater the sensitivity. Short-term Treasuries usually have less duration exposure. Stocks typically fluctuate more than high-quality government debt, but long-duration Treasuries can also experience large declines when yields jump.

3. Purchasing-power protection

Inflation reduces what a fixed number of dollars can buy. Nominal Treasuries do not adjust their coupons or face value for inflation. TIPS link principal to the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). Stocks have no contractual inflation adjustment: their results depend on corporate earnings, valuations, interest rates and the type and speed of the inflation shock.

How nominal Treasury bonds behave in high inflation

Fixed payments are predictable in dollars

A nominal Treasury pays a coupon set at issuance and returns its face value at maturity. Those cash flows are contractually defined in nominal dollars, which is why these securities are often used for liability matching and capital preservation when held to maturity.

Unexpected inflation creates a real-value loss

If inflation turns out higher than investors expected, each future coupon and the returned principal purchase less. The bond has not defaulted; the risk is that its dollars have lost purchasing power. This is the central distinction between repayment safety and inflation safety.

Rising yields can reduce the sale price

Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions. Higher inflation often leads markets to demand higher yields, either because investors expect the Federal Reserve to keep policy restrictive or because they require more compensation for inflation risk. A holder who sells before maturity may realize a loss even though the Treasury will still pay the promised face value at maturity.

Duration determines how much the price moves

A short-maturity Treasury has fewer cash flows exposed to changing rates, so its market price generally moves less than that of a 10- or 30-year bond. A long-term investor who can hold to maturity may tolerate interim price changes; someone needing cash soon cannot assume the quoted principal will be available at the original purchase price.

How TIPS protect against CPI inflation

Principal is indexed, not the coupon rate

TIPS pay a fixed interest rate on an inflation-adjusted principal amount. When CPI-U rises, the principal used to calculate interest rises; when the index falls, the adjustment can reduce principal temporarily. The stated rate is fixed at auction and, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s 2026 terms, is never less than 0.125%.

Maturity protection

TreasuryDirect states: “When a TIPS matures, you get either the increased (inflation-adjusted) price or the original principal, whichever is greater.” That floor applies at maturity, not to the market price on an earlier sale.

Available maturities

The Treasury offered TIPS in 5-, 10- and 30-year terms in 2026. Choosing a maturity near the date you expect to spend the money reduces the need to sell during an unfavorable rate move, although market prices still fluctuate before maturity.

What TIPS do—and do not—hedge

TIPS are designed around CPI-U. Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago research finds that inflation-protected bonds can hedge headline CPI over a matching holding horizon, but they can perform poorly over shorter horizons or against a different household price index. A household whose expenses rise faster or slower than headline CPI may experience a different result from the security’s index adjustment.

Stocks are a variable, not guaranteed, inflation hedge

Why equities can help over long periods

Companies own productive assets, set prices for goods and services, and can potentially grow revenue and earnings as nominal prices rise. Over a sufficiently long horizon, that earning power may provide real growth that fixed-rate bonds cannot. It is a possibility, not a promise.

Why stocks can fall during inflation

Inflation can raise wages, energy costs and financing expenses, squeezing profit margins. Higher interest rates also reduce the present value investors assign to future earnings, particularly for companies whose cash flows are far in the future. If inflation signals weaker economic growth, both earnings expectations and valuation multiples can contract.

Evidence shows the relationship changes

Federal Reserve Bank of New York research finds that inflation risk is priced in stock returns and that stock inflation betas vary over time. In other words, stocks do not have one permanent response to inflation. Federal Reserve Board research likewise finds that the stock-bond hedging relationship depends on inflation expectations and broader inflationary pressure.

Supply shocks can defeat the usual diversification story

A supply-driven shock—such as a sudden increase in energy or production costs—can hurt corporate margins while pushing interest rates higher. The Federal Reserve notes that there are periods when government bonds do not offset stock losses. A portfolio containing both assets can therefore decline at the same time during an acute inflation shock.

Stocks, nominal Treasuries, TIPS and I Bonds compared

When each choice can be safer

If you need the money within a few months or years

Match the maturity of a Treasury or TIPS holding to the date you expect to spend. Shorter maturities limit duration exposure and reduce the chance that a forced sale follows a rate spike. Do not treat a long-term bond fund’s share price as equivalent to holding an individual bond to maturity: the fund continually buys and sells securities, so it has no single maturity date.

If your main fear is unexpected CPI inflation

Examine TIPS first because their principal adjustment is explicit. Select a maturity that lines up with the liability you are trying to protect. A TIPS position can still lose market value before maturity when real yields rise, and its CPI-U adjustment may not match your personal spending basket over short periods.

If you are investing for a long retirement horizon

A diversified combination of equities and Treasuries may be more resilient than relying on either one. Stocks provide potential real growth; Treasuries provide contractual government cash flows and ballast in many, but not all, market environments. Inflation shocks are one reason not to assume that the two assets will always move in opposite directions.

If you want a savings bond rather than a tradable security

I Bonds are a separate instrument. They are non-marketable, cannot be redeemed during the first year, and have purchase limits. TreasuryDirect reported a 4.26% composite rate, including a 0.90% fixed rate, for I Bonds issued from May 1 through October 31, 2026. That rate applies to that issue period; future rates can differ. TIPS are marketable and do not have the same one-year redemption rule, but their market value changes before maturity.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down the spending date. Separate emergency cash, near-term bills and long-term goals. The closer the date, the less room you have for a market-price loss.
  2. Name the risk you are trying to reduce. Choose among default risk, price volatility and purchasing-power loss. A nominal Treasury addresses the first most directly; short maturities address duration; TIPS address CPI-linked purchasing power.
  3. Choose duration to match the liability. Longer maturities increase sensitivity to yield changes. A maturity ladder can spread reinvestment dates instead of making one large rate bet.
  4. Check the inflation measure. TIPS track CPI-U, not every household’s expenses. Compare that index with the costs you actually expect to pay.
  5. Decide whether you can tolerate equity drawdowns. Stocks have no guaranteed payout and can fall during inflationary supply shocks. Their role should match your ability to stay invested through volatility.
  6. Review account and tax treatment. TIPS inflation adjustments and interest can create current federal taxable income, while I Bond tax timing differs. Verify the rules for your account type and state with the Treasury or a qualified tax professional.
  7. Rebalance by rule, not headlines. Inflation data, yields and stock valuations change. Set a schedule or target ranges so a single report does not drive an all-or-nothing switch.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every Treasury “inflation-protected.” Only securities with an explicit index feature, such as TIPS or I Bonds, adjust under Treasury inflation rules. A conventional Treasury remains nominal.
  • Confusing a maturity guarantee with a market-price guarantee. The Treasury’s repayment terms apply at maturity. Selling earlier exposes you to prevailing prices and yields.
  • Assuming stocks automatically rise with inflation. Corporate pricing power, costs, interest rates and economic growth determine the outcome. The Federal Reserve’s research shows that the relationship is time-varying.
  • Ignoring horizon mismatch. A CPI hedge can disappoint over a short period or when your expenses follow a different index. The Chicago Fed research specifically identifies horizon and index mismatch as limitations.
  • Overlooking liquidity rules on I Bonds. They are not tradable in a market and cannot be redeemed during the first year. Money needed sooner belongs elsewhere.
  • Buying long duration for a short obligation. A higher coupon or a seemingly attractive yield does not remove the risk that the bond’s price falls before your spending date.

What “safest investment during high inflation” really means

For contractual repayment in nominal dollars, Treasuries are the reference point. For a direct CPI-linked design, TIPS are the more precise tool. For long-term growth, diversified stocks may outpace inflation, but their path and short-run inflation response are uncertain. I Bonds offer another government-backed, inflation-linked savings format with limits on purchase, liquidity and timing.
