Choose Steam when Steam Families sharing matters
Steam Families lets a user play eligible games from the libraries of up to five close family members, according to Valve’s Steamworks documentation. Shared access is a temporary license: it does not transfer permanent ownership of the game to the borrower. Compare features for the exact game you want
For multiplayer or community features, the store matters less than the game’s particular implementation. GOG’s developer documentation describes Galaxy crossplay between Galaxy and Steam users as a Galaxy-specific feature. It also notes that some Steamworks social functions have no direct Galaxy counterpart, while both platforms provide storage interfaces for cloud or PC synchronization. Steam’s two-hour rule is not the whole policy. Early Access playtime counts, while the refund period for a preorder that cannot be played before release begins at release. Check Valve’s current policy for the category and circumstances that apply to your purchase.
What “ownership” means for a digital library
GOG’s practical preservation advantage is access to DRM-free files and downloadable offline installers for games sold there. GOG’s 2022 statement also sets out its position that downloaded purchases should not be removed or altered against the buyer’s will. Steam Families, by contrast, explicitly describes shared access as temporary. For either store, think about what you need to retain—offline files, continued online services, or access through another household member—rather than treating a library entry as a single, identical kind of ownership.

- Start with the games. Check which store sells the titles you actually want, then compare their requirements and feature support.
- Prioritize offline access? Look for the GOG version and confirm that its single-player mode and any installer files meet your needs.
- Sharing with family? Check Steam Families eligibility and remember that shared licenses are temporary.
- Refund flexibility is decisive? Read the current store policy for your purchase type; do not compare the headline time windows without their conditions.
- Need online or community features? Verify those on the exact game versions, including crossplay, cloud saves, friends, and achievements.
There is no need to force every future purchase into one storefront. Choosing per game can preserve access to the features that matter most, though it may split your library and friends or save features across services.
