Steam Remote Play vs. Moonlight: Which Game Streaming Option Is Right for You?

Steam Remote Play is the simpler Steam-centered choice; Moonlight with Sunshine offers a separate, configurable host-client setup. Here’s how to choose and test either one.

Choose Steam Remote Play for the simplest route from a Steam library to another screen; choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you want a separate, configurable streaming setup. Neither option is proven universally faster or sharper by the available official documentation, so if latency or picture quality is decisive, compare them on your own PC, client, and network.

How the two options work

Steam Remote Play uses Steam Link clients

Steam Remote Play streams video and audio from a computer running Steam to another device, then sends that device’s input back to the host. Steam Link is Valve’s app or hardware route for connecting the client to the Steam-running computer. Valve supports play at home and away, subject to the connection and network setup. Valve’s Remote Play overview describes the streaming flow and client platforms.

Moonlight is the client; Sunshine is the host option

Moonlight is an app on the receiving device, not the host software. The Moonlight project’s current setup guide recommends installing Sunshine on the gaming PC, then pairing a Moonlight client. Sunshine’s guide lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs and supported operating systems; check the live requirements for your particular hardware and OS because they can change. Moonlight’s setup guide covers host installation and pairing. The older NVIDIA GameStream route is not the recommended current setup described there.

Setup Install Steam Link on the client and connect to a computer running Steam. Valve’s guide covers the initial connection. Steam Link Hardware Install and configure Sunshine on the host, install Moonlight on the client, and pair them. The project recommends starting with pairing over the home network. Games and apps Built around Steam. Valve says Steam Link hardware can stream virtually any game the host computer runs, though the integrated workflow is centered on Steam. Sunshine can offer games and apps; Moonlight’s guide explains how to add an app manually if automatic detection does not find it. Moonlight setup guide
Host hardware A computer running Steam. The exact experience depends on the host’s hardware and encoding support. Sunshine’s guide lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs, alongside OS-specific requirements. Verify support for your exact host in the live guide. Moonlight setup guide
Client devices Valve lists phones, tablets, TVs, desktop systems, Raspberry Pi, and compatible VR headsets. Availability and requirements vary by device. Valve’s Remote Play overview Moonlight lists clients including Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Android, Amazon Fire devices, iOS, Apple TV, and ChromeOS. Network setup Valve recommends wired networking in relevant setups and documents network conditions that can prevent connections. Start by pairing on the home network. Streaming from outside the home adds dependencies on the host, client, router, ISP, and network path.
Tuning and workflow One integrated Steam workflow, with supported controller configuration. Separate host and client provide more configuration options, at the cost of additional setup.
Latency and image quality No cited controlled comparison establishes that Steam Remote Play is always faster or sharper. No cited controlled comparison establishes that Moonlight with Sunshine is always faster or sharper.

Choose based on your setup and priorities

Start with Steam Remote Play if convenience is the priority

  • You already use Steam and want a direct Steam Link connection to a PC running Steam.
  • Your target device is supported by Valve’s Remote Play options.
  • You would rather avoid configuring a separate host service.

Consider Moonlight with Sunshine if you want a separate host-client setup

  • You are comfortable installing Sunshine on the gaming PC and pairing a distinct Moonlight client.
  • You want the documented Sunshine host path for a modern AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPU.
  • You want to add games or apps to Sunshine and are willing to check OS and client compatibility before setup.

Test both if responsiveness or picture quality decides it

Official and project documentation does not provide a current controlled head-to-head measurement that settles which option has lower latency or better image quality. Actual results depend on host encoding, client decoding, Wi-Fi conditions, router congestion, and—when playing remotely—the route over the internet. A wired host-to-router connection may help when host Wi-Fi is unstable, but it cannot eliminate problems elsewhere in the stream.

Set up the network before troubleshooting the app

For Steam Link

Valve’s network guidance recommends wired networking in relevant configurations and identifies client or access-point isolation as a connection blocker. Public, workplace, school, guest, captive-portal, or login-gated networks may also block Remote Play. If a client cannot connect, check the router’s isolation settings and use Valve’s suggested network settings for its troubleshooting advice and port details.

For Moonlight

Pair the client and Sunshine host at home first, following the Moonlight setup guide. Confirm that local streaming works before attempting access from outside the home; remote connections introduce additional router, firewall, ISP, and network-path variables.

For either option

A stable connection matters more than simply choosing wired or wireless in isolation: a wired host can still be paired with congested client Wi-Fi, and encoding or decoding limits can still affect play. A compatible controller can make TV or mobile gaming easier, but it is not mandatory for every device or game. Valve provides Steam Link connection and controller guidance.

Use this quick decision

  1. Check the library and host. If you mainly play games through Steam and want the least additional setup, try Steam Link first. If you prefer a separate host service and Sunshine supports your host, consider Moonlight.
  2. Check the receiving device. Confirm the Steam Link or Moonlight app is available and supported on the device you plan to use.
  3. Prove the local connection. Pair and stream at home before adding remote access or changing multiple network settings.
  4. Compare under the same conditions. If both work, try the same game, host, client, and network conditions; judge responsiveness and image quality in your own setup rather than relying on a universal ranking.
