Why a 1TB Drive Shows Less Space: Decimal vs. Binary, Formatting, and Files

A 1TB drive’s familiar 931GB display is mainly a decimal-versus-binary conversion, with formatting and system use reducing available space separately.

A 1 TB drive contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but a computer may display that capacity as about 931 “GB.” That familiar difference is mainly a unit-conversion issue: the displayed number is often calculated in binary-sized units, which are larger than decimal gigabytes. Formatting and system software can reduce the space available for your files further, but those are separate effects.

Why does a 1TB drive show about 931GB?

Drive makers rate capacity in decimal units: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A binary gibibyte (GiB), by contrast, is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Divide the drive’s byte count by the size of a GiB and the result is about 931.3 GiB. Some software labels this binary-sized result “GB,” which makes the drive appear smaller than its decimal product rating.

Seagate describes decimal capacity as the storage-industry standard and gives the rounded example of a 1 TB drive appearing as 931 GB in Windows’ binary-output calculation. Treat that as an example, not a promise about every operating-system version or every formatted drive. Seagate’s capacity-measurement explanation covers the unit distinction; its reported-capacity article provides the rounded Windows example.

What do TB, GB, TiB, and GiB mean?

Decimal and binary prefixes count bytes differently. The International Electrotechnical Commission approved binary prefixes in December 1998; NIST’s reference lists their symbols and powers. NIST’s binary-prefix reference identifies Gi as 230 and Ti as 240.

Unit Meaning Bytes
GB Decimal gigabyte 1,000,000,000
TB Decimal terabyte 1,000,000,000,000
GiB Binary gibibyte 1,073,741,824
TiB Binary tebibyte 1,099,511,627,776

Thus, the same 1,000,000,000,000 bytes equal 1 TB or about 0.91 TiB. The bytes have not vanished; the numeric value changes because a TiB contains more bytes than a TB. Apple likewise defines 1 GB as 1 billion bytes and 1 TB as 1 trillion bytes in its storage-capacity explanation.

Why can usable space be lower still?

The unit conversion explains why the number can look about 7% lower when binary-sized units are labeled “GB”; it is not filesystem overhead. A separate reduction occurs when a drive is formatted and when the operating system reserves storage. Apple says “Actual formatted capacity less” and explains that formatting uses some capacity while the operating system uses additional storage. The amount varies by device and configuration; there is no universal percentage to subtract.

  • Device capacity: the total bytes represented by the drive’s product rating.
  • Displayed capacity: those bytes converted and labeled according to the operating system’s unit convention.
  • Formatted or available capacity: what remains available on a volume after formatting and system use.
  • File size: space consumed by files, best compared using the same unit convention—or exact byte counts.

How to check whether a drive is reporting normally

  1. Find the exact byte count, if available. It is a more reliable basis for comparison than a rounded “GB” figure.
  2. Identify the units behind the display. Compare decimal TB/GB with binary TiB/GiB rather than assuming two “GB” labels mean the same calculation.
  3. Check what the reported figure describes. A raw device total, a partition, and a formatted volume with system storage are different measurements.
  4. Investigate any unexplained remainder. Consult the device and operating-system documentation. Seagate notes that older BIOS limitations can affect reported capacity; that is one possible factor, not a diagnosis for every current system.

Reformatting will not recover the apparent decimal-to-binary difference: it does not change how the same bytes convert between units, and reformatting can erase data.
