A coverage figure may estimate how many people can access a signal, while an app-based metric may measure how much time sampled users stay connected. Reliability may mean completing basic tasks or meeting quality thresholds. None of these national scores tells you by itself whether 5G will work well at your home, workplace, or regular route.
What does “5G coverage” mean?
There is no single, self-defining 5G coverage score. The first question is whether a ranking measures people with access to a signal, users’ time connected, or the network’s geographic reach.

Population coverage: people counted as having access
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defines population coverage as the share of inhabitants who have access to a mobile signal, whether or not they use the service. It measures the availability of mobile cellular services, not usage or subscriptions. ITU’s 2025 methodology describes end-of-2024 estimates; underlying data can come from Member States, operators, regulators or ministries, published reports, or trend estimates when reported data are unavailable. ITU: World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database methodology.

It does not say how often they use it or what performance they receive. A population percentage is not a promise of service at every address.

Availability: the share of time sampled users are connected
Opensignal defines Availability as the proportion of time users have a network connection. Its metric explanation explicitly distinguishes this from geographic extent: “Our availability metrics are not a measure of a network’s geographical extent.” Availability is user-centered; where participating customers spend time affects what the measure reflects. Opensignal notes that data are often collected indoors, where users spend much of their time. Opensignal: network coverage, availability and reach.
Geographic reach: where service extends
Geographic coverage or reach measures address the extent of places where a network is available, rather than how long sampled users are connected. These labels and definitions are publisher-specific, so check the methodology instead of assuming two providers use “coverage” the same way. A time-connected score and a map of land area answer different questions.

What does “5G reliability” measure?
Reliability is also not one universal statistic. It may describe connection success and task completion, or whether service repeatedly meets defined quality requirements.
Reliability Experience: connecting and completing tasks
Opensignal describes Reliability Experience in terms of users’ ability to connect to a carrier network and successfully complete basic tasks. It summarizes observed outcomes under Opensignal’s definitions and sample; it does not guarantee that every session or app will work.

Excellent Consistent Quality: meeting explicit thresholds
In its 2026 Global Network Excellence Index, Opensignal uses Excellent Consistent Quality (ECQ) to assess whether a network consistently supports demanding activities such as streaming, video calls, gaming, and mobile banking. Its ECQ thresholds are download throughput of at least 5 Mbps, upload throughput of at least 1.5 Mbps, latency below 50 ms, jitter below 12 ms, packet discard below 1%, and time to first byte below 0.8 seconds. These are thresholds for that index, not a universal definition or standard for reliable 5G. Opensignal: 2026 Global Network Excellence Index.
How a composite “best 5G” ranking is built
A composite ranking combines selected measures into a score. Its winner reflects the publisher’s chosen metrics, weights, eligible devices, and sample—not a single objective property called “best 5G.”
Rank #4
- Product Function— The cell phone amplifier boosts weak signal in 1-2 rooms, up to 5500 sq ft inside any home & office. This results in fewer dropped calls, improved battery life, higher audio quality, and faster data and streaming for All U.S. Cellular and many more And boosts 5G/4G LTE voice, text and data signals for all North American cell carriers, including Verizon’s 5G Nationwide data signals..Maximum Gain: 70 dB,Maximum Outpower: 17 dBm
- 5G Compatible:Cell phone booster support 5G and deliver amazing speeds; Only 5G that carriers have deployed in large numbers in existing 4G brands through DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing), the FCC has not yet allowed the new mmWave 600MHz cellular enhancers, so if you must use 5G, Make sure your area has 5G services in the existing 4G band before you purchase.
- Coverage Area— The indoor coverage area that cell booster varies based on existing signal at the exterior antenna location: :1-2Bars~ 300 square feet, 3-4 bars ~ 2500 square feet, 5Bars~ 5500 square feet, and the signal booster will not work if there is no signal available to boost it at the external antenna location.
- Eay Installation Keep the power is off during installing/adjusting antennas. Simply set up the outdoor Log-periodic antenna, and place signal booster where you want. Make sure the distance between the outdoor antenna and indoor antenna should be about 32ft. Following the user manual, you can easily set it up.
- FCC & IC Certified: :Cell booster complies with all FCC and IC guidelines and meet the requirements of application standards, does not interrupt or compromise any carrier's signal to and from the cell tower.
For its February 2026 Global Network Excellence Index, Opensignal assigns equal weight—one-third each—to three pillars: Time on 4G/5G, Excellent Consistent Quality, and download speed. The default ranking uses High and Premium smartphones to standardize comparisons and reduce hardware limitations. Opensignal also changed the index in February 2026 to use a single download-speed measure calculated as a device-level mean. Opensignal: 2026 Global Network Excellence Index.
Those edition details matter. Scores can shift because networks change, but also because a publisher changes its observation window, eligible devices, thresholds, weighting, or calculation. Compare like with like, and identify the edition before interpreting a change in rank.

What a ranking cannot tell you
- Whether your exact location is covered. National population estimates and national averages do not establish signal inside a particular building, on a street, or along a route.
- How much land is covered from a time-connected score. A user-weighted sample reflects where participating users spend time, not a direct map of geographic extent.
- Whether every session or app will succeed. Reliability and quality scores summarize outcomes under a publisher’s definitions and sample; they are not guarantees.
- That a small rank gap is meaningful. Opensignal publishes confidence intervals and treats overlapping operator intervals as a statistical tie. A top position is not necessarily statistically distinct from the next one. Opensignal: September 2023 methodology.
- How fast or dependable 5G will be on every phone. A 5G label alone does not specify speed, latency, indoor penetration, congestion, or whether a phone supports the relevant bands. The measures discussed here do not provide a universal ranking of those factors.
How to compare two 5G rankings
Before deciding which carrier ranks higher—or whether the ranking matters to you—check these points:
- Metric: Is it population coverage, geographic reach, time connected, speed, consistency, connection success, or task completion?
- Place and period: Does it cover a country, region, city, route, or indoor/outdoor setting, and what observation period does it use?
- Sample: Does it use crowdsourced subscriber devices, specified phone tiers, operator data, regulator estimates, or field tests? Are devices or subscriptions restricted?
- Scoring: What thresholds, weights, averaging method, network generations, confidence intervals, and tie rules shape the result?
- Your decision: For service at a home or along a route, treat national rankings as a starting point. Check the carrier’s local coverage information and seek evidence for the specific location and device.
Why does my phone show 5G but the connection is slow?
The 5G indicator identifies a network connection; it is not a promise of a particular speed or experience. Rankings may measure time connected, broad task success, or whether a set of thresholds is met, and none alone establishes performance in your current spot. A national result also cannot account for the exact building, street, route, phone, or conditions affecting your session.
