Remote Play Anywhere is for playing your own games from another device; Remote Play Together lets invited friends join a supported local-multiplayer game without owning or launching it. The requirements, supported hardware, network conditions and data use differ by mode, so the answers below separate them.
What is Steam Remote Play?
Steam Remote Play is a low-latency streaming system. The host computer does the actual game processing. It captures the game’s video and audio, sends that stream over the network, and receives controller, keyboard or mouse input from the client device. For multiplayer sessions, voice traffic can also travel between participants.

The client is therefore displaying and controlling a game that is running elsewhere; it is not downloading and rendering the full game locally. A game must already launch correctly on the host before streaming is useful. Keep Steam current on both computers and sign in as required for the mode you select. Valve’s current requirements and troubleshooting steps are in Steam Remote Play support.

What do I need to host Steam Remote Play?
Host computer requirements
- Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU in the computer running the game: “We recommend a minimum of a quad-core CPU for the computer running the game.” This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every title will perform well.
- The host must run the game normally before you attempt to stream it. Game-specific CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements still apply.
- Install current Steam updates and remain signed in. Account and game licensing checks happen through Steam.
- Connect the host to the router by Ethernet when possible. Valve calls this its preferred arrangement for the best experience.
A powerful host does not eliminate network problems. Encoding the captured frames, transporting them promptly and responding to input all have to happen fast enough for interactive play.
Client requirements
Client hardware is generally less demanding because it decodes a video stream rather than rendering the game. Valve says the client should have a GPU with hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding and notes that any recent laptop or PC should meet its client requirements. A particular phone, television, tablet or headset can impose additional operating-system, app-version or controller requirements, so check that device’s current Steam Link listing.
Sign-in and account considerations
Remote Play Anywhere uses the same Steam account on the host and the client. Remote Play Together starts with a host inviting a Steam friend from a supported game. The guest does not need to buy or launch the game when the title supports Together, but the host still needs a legitimate, working installation.
Which devices support Steam Link?
Valve’s product page lists Steam Link availability for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Android phones and tablets, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi 3, 3+, 4 and 5, Windows, Linux, macOS, and Meta Quest 2, 3 and Pro. App availability, supported operating-system versions and controller support can change by platform; use the current listing and Steam Support before setting up a device: Steam Remote Play device information.

The list is not a promise that every model in a category has identical minimums. Store listings and support pages are the authority for the version you are installing.
What are the requirements for Steam Link VR?
VR streaming is a specific use case, not a baseline requirement for ordinary Remote Play. Valve’s Steam Link headset requirements specify:
- Windows 10 or newer on the host.
- An NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or AMD RX 570 or better. RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT are excluded because they lack the required hardware encoding.
- A router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum listed wireless standard.
- A named, supported headset model and the software versions listed by Valve.
Valve’s recommendations for this VR scenario include 16 GB of RAM, a stronger GPU than the minimum and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, along with broadband service. Do not apply those VR figures to every phone, PC or television Remote Play session. Remote Play Together remains unavailable for VR even though Steam Link can stream VR games to compatible headsets.
How should I set up the network?
Preferred arrangement
Valve’s network guide says, “We highly recommend making sure your computer is directly connected to the router with Ethernet.” A wired host avoids making the computer compete over Wi-Fi airtime with the client. A wired client can also help, but the host-to-router link is the first connection to improve.

If the host must use Wi-Fi
- Use the 5 GHz band instead of a congested 2.4 GHz network when your equipment and distance allow it.
- Choose a less congested wireless channel.
- Move the host or router to reduce walls and interference.
- Lower Steam Link stream quality or maximum capture resolution until frame delivery is stable.
- Test with other heavy network activity paused, especially uploads and video calls.
Valve explains that a wireless host and wireless client can contend for the same airtime, producing choppy play. Its detailed guidance is in Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings.
Networks that commonly fail
Public, workplace, school or university, guest, gateway-login and client-isolated networks are unsupported or likely to block a connection. Isolation settings can prevent the host and client from discovering each other even when both appear connected to Wi-Fi. Try a private home network before changing game settings.
Ports and firewall checks
Valve’s Remote Play FAQ lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Its network guide additionally lists UDP 10400 and 10401 for VR streaming. These values can change, and local firewall or router rules can alter the result. Check Valve’s current support pages and allow Steam through the host firewall before manually editing router rules; opening every port is not a universal requirement.

Remote Play sends captured game video and audio from the host to the client. Your controls travel back; in multiplayer, voice traffic can also travel between participants. Steam Remote Play settings let you limit bandwidth and change maximum capture resolution, giving you a way to trade image quality for a smaller or steadier network load. Because Valve does not publish one standard rate, do not use unrelated Steam video-playback bitrate figures as a Remote Play estimate.
How to reduce network use
- Open Steam’s Remote Play settings on the host.
- Set a bandwidth limit appropriate for the connection.
- Reduce maximum capture resolution if the stream is unstable or a data cap matters.
- Use the Steam Link quality controls on the client and test latency after each change.
- Monitor your router or internet provider’s usage meter if you need a household total; Steam’s stream settings alone cannot predict a monthly bill.
On a local home network, the stream may not consume internet-provider data in the same way as an off-site session, but it still uses local Wi-Fi or Ethernet capacity. Remote connections additionally depend on both locations’ internet paths and firewall policies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Remote Play access more than the game?
Yes. Valve’s Remote Play FAQ says a remote Steam session can access the host computer beyond the streamed game. Valve also assumes that, because the same Steam account is logged in on both computers, the user has full access to both machines. Treat a client device and anyone holding its controller as having the access your account permits; close unrelated applications and avoid using Remote Play on an untrusted device.
You can turn the feature off in Steam’s Remote Play settings when it is not needed. This access statement does not establish that Valve stores your local files, nor does it provide a conclusion about telemetry, encryption or data-retention practices.

Why is Remote Play laggy, blurry or disconnected?
Choppy video or input delay
- Wire the host to the router first.
- Move Wi-Fi clients to 5 GHz and select a less congested channel.
- Lower capture resolution, stream quality or the bandwidth target.
- Close downloads, cloud synchronization and other uploads competing with the stream.
The client cannot find the host
- Confirm both devices are signed in to the expected Steam account or, for Together, that the invitation was accepted.
- Use a private network without guest isolation or a captive gateway-login page.
- Check that Steam is allowed through the host firewall and that both clients are updated.
- Test locally before troubleshooting an off-site connection.
Video works but controls do not
- Reconnect the controller and verify that Steam sees it on the client.
- Check the game’s input settings and whether another application has captured the controller.
- Try keyboard and mouse input where the title requires it.
VR will not start
Verify every VR-specific condition: Windows 10 or newer, a supported GPU with hardware encoding, the required headset and software version, and at least a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router. Remember that Together is not a VR mode; use Steam Link VR for a compatible headset instead.
What should I check before inviting friends?
- Launch the game locally on the host and confirm that its local multiplayer mode works.
- Look for the Remote Play Together marking on the Steam store page.
- Update Steam on the host and client devices.
- Connect the host to the router by Ethernet where practical.
- Invite the friend from the in-game Steam overlay and confirm which controller or input each participant will use.
- Do not expose unrelated desktop windows or accounts while a remote session is active.
These checks distinguish a game-support limitation from a network or device problem. A title that lacks the Together marking may still be playable through Anywhere by its owner, but it should not be presented as a Together-compatible game.
Bottom line: which Remote Play mode should you use?
Choose Remote Play Anywhere when one Steam user wants to play a game running on their own computer from another supported device. Choose Remote Play Together when a host wants friends to join a supported local-multiplayer title without each friend owning or launching it. For either mode, meet the host CPU guidance, use a wired host connection when possible, verify the exact client or headset requirements, and tune bandwidth and capture resolution rather than relying on a universal data estimate.
