If the preference is missing, creating it will not add decoder code to the browser. The exact default depends on the Firefox build and channel, so inspect the preference in your installed browser instead of assuming that a particular version-wide change has rolled out.
Change the JPEG XL preference
The setting for Firefox’s JPEG XL image decoder is an advanced preference, not a normal checkbox in the main settings page. To change it, use the Configuration Editor built into Firefox. The preference name is image.jxl.enabled, including the dots and lowercase letters. Mozilla identifies that exact name in its Firefox 153 developer release notes.

Use the editor’s search field to look for the exact preference name
image.jxl.enabled. Check the spelling carefully. It is case-sensitive, and a search for a similar or differently capitalized name may not find the preference you need. -
Read the value currently shown before changing it. The preference is Boolean: its value is either
trueorfalse. Select the toggle button beside the preference to switch values. Mozilla’s general instructions also say Boolean preferences can be toggled by double-clicking them, although the visible controls may vary with the editor interface. -
Set the value to
trueif you want JPEG XL decoding enabled, orfalseif you want it disabled. This affects decoding only in a Firefox build that contains the JPEG XL decoder; changing the Boolean does not add decoder code to a build that lacks it.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Retry opening the JPEG XL image after changing the value. If the change causes a problem, or you want to return to Firefox’s default for that build, use the Reset control beside the modified preference.
Mozilla’s Configuration Editor instructions explain changing Boolean preferences and resetting modified settings. Only modified preferences can be reset or removed in the editor. Reset is different from choosing the opposite value: it returns the preference to the default used by your installed Firefox, which may not match the default in another channel or release.
What the preference can—and cannot—do
image.jxl.enabled controls whether Firefox decodes JPEG XL images where the corresponding decoder is included. In practical terms, true is the enable state and false is the disable state for a build containing the decoder. The preference does not install a component, download a codec, or convert an image. It is a switch for code already present in the browser.
If Firefox will not open a .jxl image, the preference value is one item to check, but it is not the only fact that matters. A true value does not prove that a particular build has the decoder, and a missing preference does not by itself prove either that the build supports JPEG XL or that it does not. Firefox’s support history has differed by version and channel. The Mozilla records cited here establish particular channel and release facts, not compatibility for every third-party build or downstream package.

For that reason, do not add a new image.jxl.enabled preference just because it is missing. Mozilla’s Configuration Editor allows users to add preferences, but creating a name and assigning it a value cannot supply decoder code that the Firefox build does not contain. Adding a speculative preference can also make it harder to distinguish the build’s original state from a manual change. First confirm the exact spelling and inspect the installed build’s channel and actual preference availability.
Mozilla Bugzilla records that JPEG XL code began building in Beta and Release builds in Firefox 152 while the feature was still disabled by default at that stage. The record matters because it shows the distinction between code being included and the setting being enabled: those are separate conditions. Its historical statement should not be generalized to every later release, nor does it establish the configuration of every repackaged or downstream Firefox build. See Bug 2016688 for that record.
Defaults depend on Firefox version and channel
Do not assume that the preference has the same default in every Firefox release. A default-on setting, decoder availability, and a preference’s current value are related but distinct questions. Mozilla’s documentation records different historical states across Nightly, Beta, and Release. A later announced intention to change the default is not, by itself, proof that the change shipped.
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox 153 developer release notes | Mozilla listed “JPEG XL image support (Nightly),” named image.jxl.enabled, and said the Rust-based decoder was enabled by default in Nightly. |
This is a statement about Nightly at that release. It is not a confirmed default for all later Firefox versions, Beta, or Release. Source |
| Firefox 152 support record | Mozilla Bugzilla records that JPEG XL code began building in Beta and Release builds while remaining disabled by default at that stage. | It does not confirm the default in subsequent releases or every package based on Firefox. Source |
| August 24, 2026 announcement | Mozilla engineer Timothy Nikkel said, “As of Firefox 157 I intend to turn JPEG XL decoding on by default on all platforms.” The announcement identifies image.jxl.enabled, says the implementation uses jxl-rs in Rust, and notes that a Firefox Labs checkbox had been available on every channel since version 152. |
“Intend” describes a plan, not a completed rollout. The August 24 announcement does not establish whether the planned change was completed or revised by October 13, 2026. Source |
The timeline helps explain why different users may see different values. Firefox 153’s developer notes specifically describe Nightly as enabled by default; the Firefox 152 Bugzilla record describes code in Beta and Release with the preference still disabled by default at that point; and the 2026 announcement states an intention concerning Firefox 157. These are not interchangeable claims. One describes a confirmed historical Nightly state, one a confirmed earlier Beta/Release state, and one an announced future plan. Do not turn the last item into a claim that all current Firefox installations have JPEG XL enabled.

Mozilla’s Intent to Ship: JPEG XL also describes the proposal. For your own browser, check the preference’s actual value and whether it exists. That tells you what the editor currently reports for your installation; it does not override the condition that the decoder must be present. The channel and build still matter, particularly if you use a third-party package.
There is no separate product or accessory required for this setting. Firefox’s built-in Configuration Editor is the relevant interface, and JPEG XL images are digital files. The practical comparison is between channel and build history, whether decoder code is included, and whether the Boolean preference is enabled or disabled—not between add-on products or replacement parts.
If Firefox still will not open a .jxl image
Work through the checks in order, changing only the JPEG XL preference. This keeps the troubleshooting focused and makes it easier to return to the original behavior if the change does not help.

The preference is present and true: The preference is already in its enable state. JPEG XL decoding is available only if the decoder is included in that build. A true value cannot compensate for missing decoder code; check the release/channel context rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.

The preference is present and you want to turn support off: Toggle it to
false. This disables JPEG XL decoding in builds that contain the decoder. If you later want Firefox’s default behavior back, reset the modified preference instead of guessing what the default should be. -
The preference is missing: Confirm that you searched for the exact, case-sensitive spelling
image.jxl.enabled. If it is still absent, do not treat that as proof of support or non-support, and do not create the preference speculatively. Firefox channel and version history differ, and a manually created flag cannot add decoder code. -

You are using a third-party or downstream build: The cited Mozilla release and Bugzilla records document Mozilla channel history, but they do not confirm the decoder status of every package. A preference’s presence or value alone cannot establish compatibility for a build whose configuration is not covered by those records.
Mozilla’s broader advanced customization guidance covers configuration changes. Mozilla warns that changing settings in the Configuration Editor “can have serious effects on your browser’s stability, security and performance,” and notes that these customizations are not officially supported. Keep the change limited to the JPEG XL preference rather than adjusting unrelated settings. If all you need is to restore the browser’s prior default, use Reset rather than making additional changes.

How to think about the value and the default
The preference answers a narrow question: should Firefox enable JPEG XL decoding when this build has the decoder? It does not answer every question about a particular image or every detail of the browser package. This distinction is useful when interpreting the editor:
-
true: The preference is enabled. In a build containing the decoder, this is the setting that permits JPEG XL decoding.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
false: The preference is disabled. In a build containing the decoder, Firefox does not use that decoder while the setting remains false. -
No preference shown: The editor has not presented the setting under that exact name in the current state. It is not enough evidence to conclude that JPEG XL works or that it cannot work in the build.
-
Reset control shown: The preference has been modified and can be returned to the build’s default. This is the safest way to undo a manual change without assuming what that default should be.
These states should not be collapsed into a single yes-or-no claim about Firefox as a whole. “Firefox supports JPEG XL” can mean that decoder code is present in a particular build, that its preference is enabled, or that an announced rollout has reached a particular channel. Check which of those is being discussed. Mozilla’s release notes and issue history give specific version/channel evidence, while your Configuration Editor shows the preference state in your installation.
There is no reader-relevant price, hardware requirement, consumable, or purchase associated with changing this preference. It is a built-in software configuration. The only requirement established by the procedure is a Firefox build that includes the decoder if you want the toggle to make JPEG XL decoding available. No add-on, repair utility, or physical product can be recommended from the Mozilla facts cited here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Firefox preference for JPEG XL?
The exact preference is image.jxl.enabled. Search for that spelling in Firefox’s about:config Configuration Editor.
How do I enable JPEG XL in Firefox?
Open about:config, search for image.jxl.enabled, inspect the current value, and toggle it to true. This enables decoding only if the Firefox build includes the JPEG XL decoder.
How do I disable JPEG XL support in Firefox?
In about:config, find image.jxl.enabled and toggle its Boolean value to false. This disables decoding in builds that contain the decoder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why is image.jxl.enabled missing?
A missing preference does not by itself establish whether your particular Firefox build contains JPEG XL decoder code. Confirm the exact spelling and consider the build’s version and channel; do not create the preference speculatively, because a new flag cannot add missing code.
What should I do if the preference is true but a .jxl image will not open?
A true value is the enable state, but it only helps if the decoder is present in that build. Check the version and channel context rather than assuming the preference can supply missing decoder code.
How do I restore Firefox’s default JPEG XL setting?
In about:config, search for the modified preference and use its Reset control. Reset restores the default for your installed build; it is not the same as setting the value to true or false.
Is JPEG XL enabled by default in every Firefox version?
No single default can be inferred across versions and channels. Mozilla documented Nightly enabled by default in Firefox 153 and Beta/Release code disabled by default when support was recorded for Firefox 152. An August 24, 2026 statement said Mozilla intended to enable decoding by default starting with Firefox 157, but that announcement alone does not confirm the rollout shipped.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs it safe to change about:config?
Mozilla warns that Configuration Editor changes can seriously affect stability, security, and performance, and says these customizations are not officially supported. Keep the change limited to image.jxl.enabled and reset it if you want to undo your modification.
The Bottom Line
Use about:config to toggle the exact preference image.jxl.enabled: true enables and false disables JPEG XL decoding when the decoder is present. Check the actual value in your Firefox build, do not create a missing preference speculatively, and use Reset to restore that build’s default.
