Wood, laminate, and some resilient floors can be damaged when steam reaches seams or cracks; the floor’s care guide and warranty matter more than a mop’s broad compatibility claim.
Check your floor’s care instructions first
Look up the care guide and warranty for the exact flooring product—not just its general category. The American Cleaning Institute advises contacting the floor maker for recommended cleaning practice and says the hardwood flooring industry generally does not recommend steam mops on wood floors of any type (ACI guidance). Shaw’s technical bulletin is explicit for its own products: “Using steam in any way to clean Shaw hardwood, laminate and resilient flooring is not recommended” (Shaw bulletin, revised April 21, 2020).

Advice can differ. Shark says its S6001 is designed for specified sealed hard floors that tolerate high heat, while excluding unsealed wood and unglazed ceramic; its FAQ also says to use water only (Shark S6001 FAQ). That model-specific statement does not override your flooring maker’s instructions, and it should not be applied to other mop models.
Floors and conditions that make steam a poor bet
Hardwood and engineered wood
Heat and moisture can pass through joints, cracks, or vulnerable finish and harm wood. Shaw warns that steam may cause damage to its covered floors that can be irreparable. Consumer Reports also flags unsealed hardwood and engineered wood as surfaces needing caution. Do not use steam on wood if its maker prohibits it; “sealed” alone is not a universal guarantee.

Laminate and resilient flooring
Laminate joints and resilient flooring can be vulnerable to heat or moisture, and Shaw advises against steam on its laminate and resilient products. Flooring makers may set stricter limits than appliance makers, so check the product-specific care instructions and warranty before relying on a general claim that a mop works on sealed floors.
Other surfaces and visible damage
Consumer Reports and CHOICE identify additional reasons for caution: cork, unsealed or waxed timber, vinyl-tile joins, heat- or moisture-sensitive surfaces, peeling edges, and older peel-and-stick tile. Review the tile maker’s guidance and warranty. If edges are lifting or seams are damaged, do not use steam there.

Why “sealed” or a water test is not enough
Some consumer guidance describes sealed hard flooring as generally safer and suggests checking seams or whether water beads on the surface. These are not substitutes for the floor maker’s instructions. A water-bead result cannot overrule a manufacturer’s prohibition, and visible sealing does not establish that joints, edges, or the finish can withstand repeated heat and moisture. When guidance conflicts, follow the flooring maker’s care instructions and warranty.

They are not reliable deep-stain or grout cleaners
CHOICE reports weak results on old or in-ground stains and grout. As CHOICE senior project officer Kim Gilmour puts it, “Steam mops aren’t great at stain removal but keep in mind that this is dependent on the flooring you have, as some stains soak more easily into certain types of floors over others” (CHOICE, updated December 11, 2025). A steam mop is a poor purchase if your main problem is stubborn grout or established stains.

A carpet glider does not deep-clean carpet
A carpet glider can refresh the appearance of carpet, but it does not clean it as a dedicated carpet machine does. Consumer Reports characterizes steam-mop carpet use as light freshening; CHOICE points to a dedicated carpet shampooer for heavy soil.
Sanitizing claims depend on use
Whether a steam mop reduces germs depends on the particular model, surface, temperature, and how long steam remains in contact with the area. Do not assume every mop sanitizes every floor. Pad temperature and handling matter, and CHOICE advises washing pads after use.

Choose a safer tool for the job
For wood floors where damp cleaning is permitted
For surface-sealed wood, Consumer Reports describes using a broom, dust mop, vacuum, or a mop that is damp rather than dripping. A microfiber mop is one option for damp cleaning, but confirm the floor maker permits that method and follow its care directions.

For heavy carpet soil or a large spill
Use a dedicated carpet shampooer for heavily soiled carpet. For a large liquid spill on a hard floor, CHOICE points to a conventional mop or wet-and-dry vacuum rather than a steam mop.

If your floor maker permits steam, compare the right features
Only consider a steam mop after confirming that both the flooring maker and the exact mop’s manual allow the intended use. Manuals vary: Shark’s S6001 FAQ says to use water only, so do not add vinegar, detergent, fragrance, or other substances unless your specific manual permits them. When comparing suitable models, look at:
- Measured cleaning performance for the surfaces and messes you actually have.
- Weight, cord reach, tank size, and how the tank refills.
- Heat-up time and readiness signals, plus adjustable steam control.
- Availability and texture of washable pads.
- A safe place to park or rest the hot mop, and accessories you will use.
CHOICE notes that its test results do not show that a higher price necessarily means better performance. Do not choose on price or feature claims alone when floor compatibility is uncertain.
