If a game won’t run on your Steam Deck, first check its Steam Deck Compatibility rating and the requirements listed on its Steam Store page. Then install available SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and temporarily exit third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode. If the game starts to launch and then closes, verify its files and check its system requirements. The right fix depends on where the failure occurs; no single step works for every game.
First, identify what happens when you start the game
Different symptoms point to different checks. Note the game’s name and any exact error message before changing settings.

- The game never opens: Check its Deck compatibility information, then try the basic software checks below.
- It shows “Preparing to Launch” and closes: Verify the game files, consider whether other software is interfering, and compare the game’s requirements with the Deck.
- It opens but is unstable or performs poorly: Check the compatibility requirements and whether the problem changes after updates or after exiting third-party apps.
- Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform”: Check which operating systems the game supports; this message indicates that the game does not support the operating system currently in use.
Steam notes that games can fail to launch for varied reasons across different configurations, so a fix that works for one title may not apply to another. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide covers games that close after “Preparing to Launch.”

Open the game’s Steam Store page and find the Steam Deck Compatibility section. Steam assigns one of four categories:
#1 Best Overall
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
- Verified: The game works well on Steam Deck by default.
- Playable: The game works, but may require manual configuration or have other compatibility considerations.
- Unsupported: Steam does not currently consider the game playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested the game. This is neither a positive nor a negative test result.
For a Playable or Unsupported game, read the Store page’s specific unmet requirements. The category alone may not tell you which limitation matters. Compatibility is a useful diagnostic clue, not a guarantee that every game update or device configuration will behave identically. Steam explains the ratings and requirements in its Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.
Try Steam’s basic software checks
Steam’s initial recommendations for Steam Deck software instability are to install available updates, restart the device, and exit or disable third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode. Test the game after each change so you can tell what made a difference.
Rank #2
- Check for SteamOS updates: Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates. Install any available update.
- Restart the Deck: Open the Power menu and choose the restart option. After the device starts again, try the game.
- Temporarily exit third-party apps: If you installed apps through Desktop Mode, close or disable them and retest. Steam lists third-party apps as a possible source of instability.
See Steam’s basic Steam Deck troubleshooting guide for the update, restart, and third-party-app steps.
Try Proton for a Steam game that will not launch
Proton can let the Steam Deck run a Windows version of a Steam game. If the game is not launching, you can test a different compatibility tool for that game alone:

- In your Library, highlight the game and open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available and try launching the game.
Before changing the setting, note its current value; test one change at a time. Steam warns that forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed. Proton is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that an Unsupported game will work. Steam’s Deck troubleshooting guide describes the compatibility setting.
If the game closes after “Preparing to Launch”
When a game begins to launch and then closes, Steam recommends checking the installed game files, possible software conflicts, and the game’s system requirements.
Rank #4
- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.

- Verify the game files: In the game’s Steam Library properties, use Steam’s option to verify the integrity of the installed files. If files are missing or damaged, Steam can check and reacquire them.
- Disable non-essential software: Close software that could interfere with Steam, then try again.
- Check system requirements: Compare the title’s requirements with the device. Steam cautions that issues can occur when a system is at or near a game’s requirements.
Steam’s “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’” support article notes that launch failures have varied causes.

If you bought the game directly through Steam, you can submit a refund request through Steam’s help site, but eligibility and the outcome are not guaranteed. See Steam’s explanation of the platform availability error.
What to include when contacting support
If the game still will not run, give Steam Support or the game’s own support team enough detail to distinguish a compatibility issue from a launch failure:
- Game title and the exact error message, if any
- Steam Deck Compatibility rating and any unmet requirements shown on the Store page
- SteamOS and Proton versions
- Whether the game fails to open, closes after “Preparing to Launch,” or opens but behaves poorly
- Which steps you tried and whether any changed the behavior
For unresolved Deck problems, Steam directs users to SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions and Steam Support. For a non-Steam app, contact that product’s support team as well. The Steam Deck troubleshooting guide provides its support routes.
