What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Don’t verify a sale through the link that advertised it. Open the retailer’s known app or type its web address yourself, then check whether the deal and any account notice appear there. A familiar logo, a very low price, or an HTTPS padlock does not prove a seller is genuine.
Pause before clicking or paying
Unexpected messages and ads can imitate real retailers to sell counterfeit goods, send something unlike the advertised item, or take payment without delivering anything. Be especially cautious if an offer pressures you to act quickly, claim a coupon, fix an account, or confirm payment information. The Federal Trade Commission says legitimate companies will not unexpectedly email or text you a link to update payment information. FTC guidance on phishing

A brand name or logo in a message or social ad is easy to copy. Treat the message as a lead to check independently, not as proof that the deal is real.

Verify the seller and the offer independently
Go to the retailer through a known route
Open the retailer’s app or type its known address into your browser. Look for the product or account notice there; do not use the ad or message link to sign in or check an order. For Amazon account or order messages, Amazon advises going directly to its site and checking Your Orders. Amazon’s guidance on identifying fake websites

Inspect the actual destination
Read the domain carefully for misspellings, odd wording, or a numeric address. If a link’s displayed text differs from its actual destination, don’t open it. These are examples Amazon gives for identifying fake Amazon sites, not a universal checklist that can certify every retailer’s website.
For an unfamiliar seller, search the seller’s name and the exact website address with words such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” A lack of negative results is not proof of legitimacy; combine what you find with the other checks here. FTC online-shopping advice

Check the whole deal, not just the headline price
Compare the full item description, seller identity, total cost, shipping, offer conditions, and return or refund terms. Sale and clearance items may have different return rules. An unusually cheap branded product can be counterfeit or stolen, so a low price alone should not settle the question. The FTC’s online-shopping guide recommends checking seller information, reviews, and deal terms.
Don’t rely on HTTPS
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site; it does not establish that the seller is genuine. Scam sites can use HTTPS too. FTC online-shopping advice

Protect your accounts and payment
Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication
Use a strong, unique password for each account, especially email: access to your inbox can help someone reset other passwords. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on email, shopping, and financial accounts where available. MFA adds another sign-in factor, such as an authenticator-app code, a code from another device, a security key, or a device-based factor. The FTC says MFA makes it harder for a scammer to sign in even if they have your username and password. Check that you can use the account’s recovery options and keep a backup method available. FTC advice on phishing and account security
Keep your operating system and security software updated. If you want a physical sign-in factor, a FIDO2-compatible hardware security key is one possible MFA option; it protects account sign-in, but cannot verify a sale link or prove that a store is legitimate.

Choose payment methods with recourse
When possible, pay by credit card. The FTC says cardholders can dispute charges for duplicate billing, goods that never arrive, or goods that are wrong or defective. Contact your card issuer promptly and follow its dispute instructions. Be wary of a seller who insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency, which can be difficult to reverse. FTC online-shopping advice
Keep the records
Save the seller’s name and website, the order and payment details, the shipping promise, the return policy, receipts, and messages. These may help if you need to resolve a dispute with the seller or your card issuer. FTC online-shopping advice
