Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want an OLED screen, SteamOS, two trackpads, and a lower listed weight. Choose the ROG Ally X if you prefer Windows 11, a 1080p/120Hz display with VRR, higher listed processor and memory specifications, a larger battery capacity, or USB4. Neither is a universal winner: the best fit depends on your games, software, and priorities.

This comparison uses manufacturer specifications, not matched game benchmarks or hands-on testing. Check your specific games and services for current compatibility, and compare current local prices and configurations before buying.

Which one should you buy?

Choose Steam Deck OLED if you value the screen and SteamOS experience

  • You want an OLED panel and a 7.4-inch display. It has fewer pixels and a lower refresh ceiling than the Ally X, so this is a panel-type and size preference rather than an across-the-board display win.
  • You prefer SteamOS 3 and its handheld-focused interface.
  • You expect to use trackpads for mouse-like input or configurable controls. Whether they improve your experience depends on your games and preferences.
  • You value advertised quick suspend and resume. Valve describes putting the Deck to sleep with the power button and waking it where you left off; that is the manufacturer’s stated behavior, not a comparative reliability test.
  • You want the lower published weight: approximately 640g versus the Ally X’s 678g. The figures do not establish which device feels more comfortable in your hands.

Choose ROG Ally X if you value Windows and its listed hardware

  • You want Windows 11 Home for your preferred software workflow.
  • You prioritize the 1080p resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and FreeSync Premium VRR listed for its 7-inch IPS-level display. These are different characteristics from OLED image quality, and no single specification makes the display better for every buyer.
  • You want the higher listed CPU/GPU configuration and 24GB of memory. Those specifications do not establish a particular frame-rate advantage in a game.
  • You prioritize an 80Wh battery capacity or the listed USB4-capable connectivity. Capacity alone does not show how long the device lasts during your games.
  • You want the specifically listed 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and UHS-II microSD reader. Confirm the precise regional model before relying on a configuration detail.

Screen: OLED versus resolution, refresh rate, and VRR

The Deck OLED has the larger listed panel at 7.4 inches and uses HDR OLED at 1280 × 800 with refresh rates up to 90Hz. The Ally X uses a 7-inch IPS-level panel at 1920 × 1080 and 120Hz, with FreeSync Premium VRR. OLED, resolution, refresh rate, and variable refresh rate describe separate aspects of a display; neither specification set settles which screen you will prefer.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Think about what matters most in the games you play: OLED panel characteristics and a larger screen, or higher pixel resolution, a higher refresh ceiling, and VRR. The specifications do not establish how individual games perform at those display modes.

Performance: what the component specifications can and cannot tell you

On paper, the Ally X has newer and higher-count listed CPU and GPU configurations than the Deck OLED, plus 24GB rather than 16GB of memory. That is a specification comparison, not a measured gaming result. It does not establish how large a performance difference will be, whether one device will run a particular game better, or what frame rate either will achieve.

VALVE Steam Deck OLED 512GB SSD + 16GB RAM (International Version) - 7.4"" inch, 90Hz, 1280 x 800px, SteamOS 3.0, Handheld Gaming Console, Black
  • International (UK) Version
  • 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
  • SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

A fair game-performance comparison would need same-game testing under stated resolution, graphics settings, power profile, and software versions. No such benchmark results are established here. If performance in a specific title is your deciding factor, seek current tests for that title and settings rather than treating component counts as a guaranteed outcome.

Battery: compare capacity separately from runtime

Valve lists a 50Wh battery for the Deck OLED and a content-dependent gameplay range of 3–12 hours. ASUS lists an 80Wh battery for the Ally X but does not give a directly comparable runtime on the cited specifications page. The devices therefore cannot be ranked on real-world battery life from these figures alone: game, settings, and usage affect runtime, and no matched test is provided.

Operating system and game compatibility

The central software distinction is SteamOS 3 on the Deck OLED versus Windows 11 Home on the Ally X. That difference can affect how you prefer to navigate the handheld and use launchers, games, and other software, but the operating system alone does not prove that every game or service will work as you expect.

Before choosing, check current support for the exact games, launchers, anti-cheat systems, subscriptions, and mods you rely on. In particular, if you are buying for a specific Game Pass title or another subscription service, verify the current support path for that title on the device and operating system you intend to use; these specifications do not establish game-by-game compatibility.

Controls, weight, storage, and ports

The Deck OLED lists two 32.5mm trackpads, four assignable grip buttons, and gyro. ASUS lists two assignable grip buttons and gyro for the Ally X, but no trackpads. Trackpads can be useful for mouse-like input or configurable menus; that is a practical difference, not proof that one control layout is more comfortable for everyone.
