Save enough context to identify and understand the response, then report it through the AI service’s reporting or support route using the category that best fits the harm. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. In the UK, report suspected child sexual abuse imagery—including AI-generated imagery—to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), rather than downloading or sharing it.
What to save before you report
There is no universal evidence format established for reports to AI services. A screenshot can be useful, but do not assume every service requires one or offers the same export, retention, or reporting controls. Record the details below when safe and lawful; this is a practical checklist, not a legal evidence standard.

- Service and context: note the AI service and, if relevant, the account or conversation where the response appeared.
- When it happened: record the date and time, including the time zone if you know it.
- What led to the response: preserve the relevant prompt or preceding conversation together with the harmful output, so the context is clear.
- Where it appeared: distinguish a private chat from a public post, shared link, or search result. Include a URL, account name, or other locator when available.
- What you did next: note any steps already taken and save a report confirmation or reference number if the service provides one.

How to report the response to the AI service
- Open the service’s reporting or support route. Use an in-product report control if one is available, or the provider’s support route. Controls and labels vary and may change, so follow the service’s current help information.
- Choose the closest matching category. Describe the actual problem—for example, a threat, impersonation, or abusive content—instead of selecting a category that does not fit.
- Give enough context to locate and assess it. Include the relevant conversation context, when and where it appeared, and a locator such as a URL or account name if available. Keep the explanation concise and factual.
- Keep the confirmation. If the service supplies a confirmation or reference number, record it with the date of your report.
Matching the category to the issue can help route a report. Report Harmful Content, a UK-oriented service, notes that an initial social-media report may be assessed by a computer and illustrates why the reported category should match the evidence. If the response was shared publicly
Report both the original chatbot response to the AI service and the public post or account where it was shared, if those are separate. A public post, a search result, and a private one-to-one conversation can involve different reporting routes.

In the UK, Ofcom explains that Online Safety Act Part 3 duties cover AI-generated content when it is user-generated (shared by users) or encountered through search. A one-to-one chatbot interaction that is neither shared nor search content is outside those Part 3 duties, although some pornographic chatbot content could fall under Part 5. The rules do not make every chatbot provider subject to the same duties as a social network. Suspected child sexual abuse imagery in the UK
Report it to the IWF, which accepts reports of child sexual abuse images and videos, including AI-generated, animated, cartoon, and drawn images. The IWF says reports are anonymous and contact details are optional. Do not send these images to Report Harmful Content, which says it cannot accept reports of sexual images of under-18s. As Isobel, an IWF analyst, puts it: “We know seeing pictures or videos showing the sexual abuse of children is upsetting but reporting them to us so we can have them removed is vital to allow victims closure and prevent repeated victimisation.” IWF reporting service

Other harmful or illegal content in the UK

Outside the UK
Start with the platform’s reporting route, and use the relevant local emergency, law-enforcement, privacy, child-protection, or specialist service when appropriate. The routes described here for emergencies and child sexual abuse imagery are UK-specific; country-specific procedures differ.

Harmful does not always mean illegal
Some online material can be harmful without being illegal. UK government guidance gives examples including certain self-harm, eating-disorder, graphic-violence, or abusive content. The appropriate next step depends on the content, context, and location; do not assume that every harmful AI response is a crime. UK government guidance on online harms
Rules can also address narrower issues without creating a universal reporting process.
