A documented option, codex-discord, supports a local Codex CLI login and launchers for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Another community project, discord-coding-agent, describes an always-on Raspberry Pi host. Both are community integrations, not evidence of a built-in Discord remote-control feature in every coding agent.
How the phone-to-agent setup works
The phone is the chat and control surface. A Discord bot or bridge receives your message, and a host computer runs the coding agent against a checked-out project. The host also performs any permitted file edits or commands. That means the host must have access to the project and be online while work is being requested or performed.

The projects describe different implementations; do not assume their setup steps, security behavior, or requirements are interchangeable. In the Pi project’s design, Discord communication uses an outbound Gateway connection, so its guide says a public server, webhook, tunnel, or port forwarding is not needed. It still requires internet access and valid Codex authentication.

Set up the documented codex-discord workflow
The following summarizes the project’s published setup path; it is not a claim that this installation was independently tested. Follow the repository’s current guide, since its compatibility and setup details may change.
- Prepare the host. Install Node.js 20 or newer and the Codex CLI on the computer that will run the bridge. Log in to Codex on that same computer.
- Create and invite a Discord bot. Create a Discord application and bot, enable Message Content Intent, and invite the bot using the
botandapplications.commandsscopes. - Configure access and project paths. In the project’s local environment file, provide the bot token, server ID, allowed user IDs, and project-root configuration. Keep the token secret. The project says its normal local-login workflow does not require a manually supplied OpenAI API key.
- Start the bridge and register a channel. Use the launcher for your host platform, then map a Discord channel to the project directory you intend the agent to use.
- Send a prompt and manage the session. Send your request in that channel. The documented bot can present approval or denial controls for edits and command execution; its session and status commands let you inspect or continue work, while stop and queue controls manage activity.
Configure Discord access and permissions carefully
A bot connected to a coding agent can relay instructions that lead to file changes or shell commands. Before inviting it into a server, decide who may invoke it, which project directories it can reach, and how approvals work. The codex-discord project documents an allowed-user whitelist, rate limiting, project-path validation, and a BASE_PROJECT_DIR boundary. These are features documented by that project, not guarantees that every bridge provides equivalent protections.

A separate bridge’s setup guide says ordinary message prompts depend on Message Content Intent, recommends the bot and applications.commands scopes, and says its default workflow does not need Administrator or Manage Channels permissions. Follow the requirements for the bridge you choose rather than granting broad permissions by habit.
- Restrict the bot to people you trust; do not post its token in Discord or share it as an ordinary message.
- Understand whether a button approves a file edit, a shell command, or both, and what limits the agent’s sandbox and approval policy impose.
- Use a project directory that does not expose unrelated files or secrets to the agent.
- Know how to stop a running task. Stopping a task does not necessarily undo edits already made or external effects triggered by a command.
- Be especially cautious about shared channels: a prompt from another member may cause work on the host if that member is authorized to use the bot.
What to expect when using it from a phone
Once configured, send requests and read replies in the Discord mobile app just as you would in a desktop channel. The coding work itself remains on the host, so the phone does not need a local copy of the repository or a development environment. If the host is asleep, offline, logged out, or unable to reach the project, the bridge cannot do the work described by these setups.

Use the bridge’s status or session controls to check ongoing work and resume a conversation where supported. For anything consequential, review the proposed action and the resulting project changes on the host rather than treating a Discord message as proof that a change is correct.
