How to Keep a Remote Coding Agent Running When Your Phone Is Offline

Your phone can go offline without interrupting a coding agent—if its execution host stays online. Here’s how local sessions, remote hosts, and Codespaces differ.

Your phone can disconnect without stopping a coding agent—but only if the agent is running on a separate host that stays powered and online. A phone is a control surface for prompts, approvals, and status; it does not provide the compute that keeps the agent working.

What keeps the agent running when your phone loses connection?

The execution host does. If an agent is running on your computer, that computer must remain awake and connected. If it is running in a cloud development environment, the environment must remain active within that service’s time limits. Losing your phone’s connection interrupts your ability to interact; it does not, by itself, pause a process running elsewhere.

Remote access is not a way to keep a sleeping computer awake. GitHub says a remotely controlled Copilot CLI session continues to run on the local machine where it started. VS Code likewise runs remote agent sessions on the selected host; if that host is offline, it appears disconnected until it returns.

Choose where the agent should execute

Approach Where it runs If the phone goes offline Main limits
GitHub Copilot CLI remote control The computer where the interactive CLI session began The process can continue if that computer remains awake and online. Reconnect through GitHub.com or GitHub Mobile when available. Unavailable while the host sleeps or loses network. Organization policy may need to enable the feature. It does not support the programmatic --prompt invocation, and slash commands such as /allow-all are unavailable in the remote interface. GitHub documents the feature and its requirements.
VS Code remote Agents A selected SSH or dev-tunnel host The browser or phone can disconnect while the host keeps the session running; reconnect when the host is reachable. The host and connection path must be available. A dev tunnel should require authentication. VS Code can reconnect sessions when a previously offline host returns. See VS Code’s remote agent documentation.
GitHub Codespaces A GitHub-hosted cloud development environment Closing the browser does not itself stop a running Codespace. You can reconnect later if it is still active or restart it. The documented default inactivity timeout is 30 minutes, and the maximum Codespace lifetime is 12 hours, even while active. Stopping the Codespace ends its running processes. See the Codespaces lifecycle rules.

Use Copilot CLI remote control for a session on your own computer

This option fits when you want to start an interactive Copilot CLI session locally and reach it from GitHub.com or GitHub Mobile. Your computer—not the phone—must stay awake, connected, and able to run the CLI and its tools. The feature is not available for a programmatic --prompt run, and your organization may control whether remote control is enabled.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

GitHub says session events—including conversation messages, tool execution events, and permission requests—are sent from the local computer to GitHub. Remote commands are polled from GitHub and injected into the local session. Access is limited to the same signed-in GitHub account that started the session. The remote interface can handle questions and permission requests, but it does not expose slash commands such as /allow-all. Check GitHub’s current prerequisites and behavior.

Use VS Code remote Agents when a remote host should do the work

VS Code’s remote Agents workflow can connect to a host over SSH or a dev tunnel and manage sessions through a browser, including from a phone. The agent runs on that remote host, so your personal computer can be out of the picture; the remote machine still needs power, network access, and a usable connection path. If it goes offline, access is unavailable until it returns. VS Code documents automatic session reconnection after a previously offline host becomes available.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Protect dev tunnels with authentication. VS Code warns that an anonymous tunnel URL can let others reach the machine and start agent sessions, a particularly serious risk if automatic approval is enabled. Review the remote-host and tunnel guidance.

Use Codespaces when you want a cloud-hosted workspace

A Codespace moves the development environment to GitHub-hosted infrastructure, so disconnecting your phone or closing the browser does not itself stop the environment. It is not an unlimited background worker: GitHub documents a 30-minute default inactivity timeout, which users can customize subject to organization policy, and a 12-hour maximum lifetime. Plan a restart or choose another host arrangement if a task must run longer than those limits.

GitHub distinguishes compute from storage: only running Codespaces incur CPU charges, while stopped Codespaces continue to incur storage costs until deleted. Stopped inactive Codespaces are automatically deleted after a default retention period of 30 days; that retention setting can be customized. The 30-minute idle timeout, 12-hour maximum lifetime, and 30-day default deletion period describe different lifecycle events. Check current billing and retention settings before choosing a configuration. Read the current lifecycle and billing details.

Set up a session that can survive a phone disconnection

  1. Choose the execution host. Use your own computer only if it can stay awake and online. For independence from your personal computer, use a reachable remote host or cloud development environment.
  2. Start the agent on that host. For Copilot CLI remote control, start an interactive session on the local computer. For VS Code remote Agents, connect to the intended SSH or dev-tunnel host. For Codespaces, start the agent inside the Codespace.
  3. Connect from the supported interface. Use GitHub.com or GitHub Mobile for Copilot CLI remote control, or the documented browser workflow for VS Code remote Agents. For a dev tunnel, require authentication.
  4. Check permissions and interaction limits before leaving. Confirm how the session handles questions and approvals. Copilot CLI’s remote interface can respond to questions and permission requests, but it does not support slash commands such as /allow-all.
  5. Save and push at useful checkpoints. Keep valuable changes in version control and push them to a remote repository. That gives you a durable handoff if the host stops or the session cannot be resumed.
  6. Plan around the host’s lifecycle. For Codespaces, account for the inactivity timeout and 12-hour maximum lifetime. If the task could exceed either limit, plan how to restart it or select a host whose limits fit.

Protect the work and regain access after a disconnect

Codespaces: saved files persist, running processes do not

GitHub says Codespaces saves workspace changes across stop, restart, and rebuild. A stopped Codespace does not keep its processes running, but saved files can be available when you restart it. If you lose internet access, you cannot access the Codespace until you reconnect; GitHub says uncommitted changes are saved and the same state is available again after reconnecting. Deleting a Codespace deletes its work, so commit and push important changes rather than relying only on the workspace. For a long-running Codespace, pull the default branch when appropriate before resuming. Lifecycle details and Codespaces development guidance explain persistence and working with the environment.

Local and remote-host sessions: restore the route to the host

If you used a local Copilot CLI session, reconnect through GitHub.com or GitHub Mobile when the local computer and its network connection are available again. If you used VS Code remote Agents and the host went offline, wait until it returns and restore the SSH or authenticated tunnel connection; VS Code documents automatic session reconnection when the host becomes available again. A remote-control app cannot recover a process that stopped because its host shut down.
