For Valve’s current rechargeable Steam Controller, the magnetic Steam Controller Puck is more convenient if you keep the controller in one regular spot: docking it makes charging part of putting it away, and the Puck also serves as the wireless transmitter. USB-C is more flexible for a desk, travel, or a direct wired connection. Valve supports both for routine charging; it has not published a comparison showing that either charges faster.
First, make sure you have the current Steam Controller
This comparison applies to Valve’s current rechargeable Steam Controller, which has an 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery, a USB-C connector, and a magnetic charging interface for the Steam Controller Puck. Valve lists the current model’s battery life as 35+ hours of gameplay, with reduced battery life during tracked gameplay with Steam Frame; that figure is not a charging-time estimate. These are convenience trade-offs based on the devices’ design, not results from a head-to-head test. Valve does not publish a charging-speed comparison, so there is no substantiated basis for saying the Puck or USB-C is faster.

When the Puck is the easier choice
Choose the Puck if the controller has a regular home and you want charging to happen as part of putting it away. Magnetic docking avoids lining up and plugging in a cable each time. It is particularly useful if you also use the Puck as the wireless transmitter, since one accessory handles both roles.
Valve says the Puck can separate from the controller if pulled hard enough, which helps reduce the risk of tripping or pulling the controller off a surface. Keep the setup clear so nothing prevents that separation. Valve’s guide describes this feature in its Steam Controller product guide.

When USB-C is more convenient
Use USB-C if you already have a cable where you play, want to charge without returning the controller to a fixed dock, or prefer a direct wired connection. It can also be the simpler option when travelling if you already carry a compatible cable. Valve’s product page identifies USB-C, but does not state a required cable length, charging speed, or wattage.

Can you leave the controller charging?
Yes. Valve / Steam Support says: “The Steam Controller was designed to be left charging with either Puck or USB-C whenever it’s not being used.” Valve also says charging behavior is managed directly in firmware and optimized for long-term battery health. Safety notes for charging
- The Puck and controller each contain magnets. Before connecting them, make sure they are free of metallic objects.
- Do not obstruct the Puck’s ability to separate from the controller if pulled.
- Do not use damaged cables or components.
- If the battery is leaking or physically damaged, follow Valve’s qualified replacement or support instructions and use an authorized replacement battery.
