A Steam Deck is worth considering if portable PC gaming is also a priority, but Valve’s official documentation confirms Steam Remote Play—not official Sony PS Remote Play support.
The right choice depends on whether you want to reach games running on your own PS5 or use a separate cloud-gaming catalog. Those are different ways to play, and neither Xbox Cloud Gaming nor GeForce NOW provides access to your PS5 library.

First, decide what you mean by streaming PS5 games
There are two distinct ways to stream PlayStation games. With PS Remote Play, your PS4 or PS5 runs the game and streams it to another device. Sony says a PS4 or PS5 console is required for Remote Play to other devices.
PlayStation cloud streaming is a separate option for eligible games in Sony’s service catalog. It does not connect your handheld to a game running on your own PS5; access depends on the supported titles and current service terms. Sony’s PlayStation Portal now supports both Remote Play and cloud streaming for eligible games.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Other services mentioned below, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW, offer their own games and catalogs. They are not alternate ways to stream your PS5 library.
Choose the alternative that fits your setup
| Your priority | Best-fit option | What it does | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| You already have a compatible phone and want PS5 Remote Play | Phone plus Backbone One | Uses Sony’s Remote Play app to stream from your console; the controller adds physical controls. | You still need a PS4 or PS5, and Backbone edition compatibility differs between iOS and Android. |
| You want a dedicated handheld for several streaming services | Logitech G Cloud | Logitech lists PS5, PC and Xbox Remote Play, GeForce NOW, Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming and local Google Play games. | Streaming relies on a network connection; cloud services may require separate subscriptions and may vary by region. |
| You also want a handheld PC for native games and PC streaming | Steam Deck | Runs handheld PC games and supports Steam Remote Play from a gaming PC. | Valve’s official material does not establish Sony-supported PS Remote Play on Steam Deck. |
Before choosing, consider what you already own, whether you need your PS5 library or another service’s catalog, whether you prefer a dedicated handheld or a phone, and how much setup or subscription cost you are willing to accept. Current prices and inventory are not established here.
Phone plus Backbone One: reuse the device you own
This is the straightforward route if your goal is to play your PS5 remotely and you already own a compatible phone. Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app, connect to your console, and use the phone as the screen. A Backbone One provides physical controls without requiring a separate gaming handheld.

Backbone’s compatibility guidance makes an important distinction: Android users need the Backbone One PlayStation Edition for PS Remote Play, while compatible iOS devices can use any Backbone One edition. Check the phone and controller compatibility details before buying. A Backbone does not replace the PS4 or PS5 that runs the game.
Backbone also describes Xbox Cloud Gaming support for users with the required Xbox Game Pass subscription, even without an Xbox console. That applies to Xbox’s cloud catalog—not to PS5 Remote Play or access to PlayStation games.
Logitech G Cloud: a dedicated handheld for more than PlayStation
If you want a separate handheld rather than tying up your phone, Logitech’s G Cloud is the broadest multi-service option in this comparison. Logitech lists Remote Play from PS5, PC and Xbox, cloud play through GeForce NOW and Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming, and local games from Google Play. See Logitech’s G Cloud product page for its supported use cases.

For Xbox, Xbox’s G Cloud page describes Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play, and says a Game Pass subscription is sold separately for cloud gaming. Do not assume a subscription is included with the handheld or that every service is available in every region. Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW expand the device’s gaming options, but neither streams games from your PS5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSteam Deck: choose it for handheld PC gaming first
The Steam Deck makes most sense if you want a handheld PC as well as the ability to stream games from a gaming PC. Valve says Steam Remote Play streams games from a PC to another device, and its Steam Link clients include Linux. In this arrangement, the gaming PC runs the game; the receiving device gets the video and audio and sends controls back.
That official Steam documentation does not confirm a Sony-supported PS Remote Play application for Steam Deck. If reaching your PS5 library is the main reason you are considering a handheld, choose a device with documented Sony compatibility rather than treating Steam Remote Play as equivalent.

What changes if you keep the PlayStation Portal?
The Portal is the baseline rather than an alternative, but Sony’s cloud-streaming support changes the comparison: it can now access eligible games through Sony’s cloud service as well as use Remote Play. Sony’s US service and product pages describe eligibility and catalog limits, so check those terms if cloud access is the reason you would choose it.
Sony announced a Portal software update on March 17, 2026, adding a 1080p High Quality mode and interface refinements. That is a dated feature update, not evidence that the Portal or any alternative has better image quality or lower latency.
Account for network and host requirements
Remote Play sends the game’s video and audio from a host console or PC to the handheld or phone, while the device sends your controls back. The host has to be available, and the connection needs to carry traffic in both directions. A streaming device cannot eliminate the need for the console or PC that runs the game.
Cloud gaming has a different dependency: the service streams an eligible game from its own infrastructure, and your access depends on the service’s catalog, subscription terms and regional availability. The official product pages cited here do not provide a like-for-like latency or performance comparison among these devices, so there is no sound basis for ranking them by measured responsiveness.
