The puck handles wireless connection and charging; Valve also lists direct USB-C charging. If you have the 2015 Steam Controller, check compatibility carefully: it uses AA batteries and Micro-USB, not the newer puck-and-USB-C setup.
Start by identifying your Steam Controller
There are two different power setups to account for when shopping. Valve’s 2026 Steam Controller specifications list a rechargeable 8.39 Wh battery, USB-C charging and a magnetic puck. The controller is listed at 111 × 159 × 57 mm and the puck at 50 × 28 × 9 mm; Valve notes that some specifications may change ahead of availability. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

The original 2015 controller instead uses two AA batteries and has a Micro-USB port. Valve described its included dock as a dongle extension dock, not a charging cradle. Its product page gave an “up to 80 hours” battery estimate from preliminary testing with the included AA batteries and cautioned that actual life varies by usage and battery type. That historical estimate is not directly comparable to the newer model’s specifications. See Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller listing.
Before buying, confirm the exact model named by the stand’s maker. A dock built around the 2026 magnetic puck should not be assumed to fit or charge the 2015 controller.

What a stand does—and what it does not
On the 2026 model, the puck is both a wireless transmitter and a charging station. Valve says the controller can be charged either with the puck or directly through USB-C, and its support guide states: “The Steam Controller was designed to be left charging with either Puck or USB-C whenever it’s not being used.” Read the Steam Controller charging support guide.
A stand is therefore mainly a holder and positioning aid for the puck, not a separate charging system. If you already have the included puck, a compatible holder can keep it ready on a desk and make docking easier. Alternatively, charge the controller directly with USB-C; no stand is needed for that route.

Documented option: Mechanism Steam Controller Dock
Mechanism’s Steam Controller Dock is a retail stand designed to use the controller’s included puck. At the time of the source check on October 7, 2026, the maker listed it at $39 and said it works with or without its Basegrip. Price and availability can change, so verify the current listing before ordering.

Mechanism product-page reviewers report mixed experiences with one-handed removal and shipping damage. Those are customer reports, not independent tests, so they do not establish how stable or durable every unit will be.

What to check before choosing a stand
- Exact generation: Confirm the stand is intended for the 2026 puck-equipped controller if that is your model. Do not infer compatibility from the Steam Controller name alone.
- Puck included or reused: Check whether the stand holds your existing puck or includes one. Mechanism’s dock uses the controller’s included puck.
- Cable requirements: Confirm which cable is needed and whether it comes with the stand. For Mechanism’s dock, the controller’s USB-C cable is required and not supplied with the dock.
- Docking and removal: The puck connects magnetically. Choose a design that presents it clearly and lets you detach it without obstruction.
- Base and footprint: If you want a finished desk stand, check its weight, base and dimensions. A printable holder may be a lower-cost route, but Mechanism’s version lacks the weighted base of its retail product.
- Current price and stock: Check the maker’s live listing, since these details can change.
Protect the magnetic connection
Valve’s 2026 manual says: “The wireless adapter/charging puck (Steam Controller Puck) will separate from the Controller (Steam Controller) if pulled hard enough.” It also warns against preventing that separation.
