Start with the exact device and seller
Identify the model and generation before comparing prices. Confirm the configuration you want—such as storage, color, regional version, and connectivity—and check which accessories are included. Then determine who actually inspected, repaired, and sells the unit. A manufacturer’s refurbishment program may make specific commitments that do not apply to an unaffiliated marketplace listing.

For marketplace offers, check who fulfills the order and who handles returns and warranty claims. Save the listing and any written answers from the seller; a general program description is not a substitute for terms tied to the item you are buying.
Compare the condition promises, not just the grade
Ask what functional tests were performed and whether advertised functions are covered. Find out whether parts were replaced, which parts were used, and what the cosmetic grade means in visible terms. A grade such as “good” or “excellent” is not enough to establish the condition of a particular unit; request photos of the actual device when possible.

Battery condition deserves its own answer. Look for a stated minimum capacity or a clear statement that the battery is new, tested, or original. For headphones, also ask about wear items such as earcups; for other devices, check chargers, cables, tips, cases, and any other included accessories.
Read warranty and return terms separately
A warranty and a return window protect against different problems. For the warranty, record who provides it, when it starts, how long it lasts, what it excludes, and whether service is available where you live. For returns, check the deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether restocking fees or deductions for condition can apply.

Apple says its Certified Refurbished products undergo full functional testing, cleaning, and inspection, with genuine Apple replacement parts used as needed. Apple states that refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell. Its program page also describes included accessories, cables, and operating systems, a new white box, a one-year limited warranty, and free shipping and returns; AppleCare may be available for additional coverage. For a specific device, enter its serial number in Apple’s coverage lookup and review the result rather than relying solely on a seller’s screenshot or general assurance.

Bose says its Certified Refurbished products are cleaned and tested, with Bose replacement parts fitted as needed. Bose states that purchases made directly from Bose carry a one-year warranty and a 30-day return policy, with free delivery and returns. Check the serial number and preserve your evidence
Confirm that the serial number is present and intact, and that the device matches the model in the listing. Sony says a deliberately removed or altered serial number makes a product ineligible for warranty service, while a number that has faded or rubbed may still qualify. Inspect and test the device promptly after delivery
Use the return window to check the unit against the listing and the seller’s written promises. These are practical arrival checks, not a substitute for the seller’s warranty or a claim that every device has undergone the same testing.
