Static Site Generators: What They Are and How to Choose One

A static site generator prepares pages before visitors request them. Choose one by evaluating freshness needs, authoring workflow, team skills, interactivity, and deployment.

A static site generator (SSG) turns content and templates into ready-to-serve pages before visitors request them. Choose one by checking whether your content can be prepared ahead of time, how fresh its data must be, which authoring workflow your team can maintain, what interactivity you need, and where the generated files will run. There is no universally best generator for every site.

What is a static site generator?

An SSG takes source material—such as Markdown files, structured data, and templates—and builds pages, commonly HTML, in advance. Visitors receive the generated output rather than asking the system to assemble every page from scratch for each request. Jekyll, for example, documents converting Markdown pages to HTML and placing the generated site in an _site directory; Next.js describes static generation as creating pages ahead of a request and serving them through a CDN.

“Static” describes how a page is delivered, not whether the entire website must be inert. A generated page can include client-side JavaScript, and a site can mix prebuilt pages with request-time rendering or client-side data fetching where the information or behavior calls for it. See the Next.js rendering documentation for its explanation of static generation and alternatives.

When should you use static generation?

It is a good fit when a page can be prepared before a visitor arrives. Typical examples include blog posts, marketing pages, portfolios, product listings, help pages, and documentation. The important question is not whether a site is called “static,” but whether each page’s content and behavior can be assembled at build time without making the experience inaccurate or awkward.

  • Good candidates: articles, documentation, landing pages, and other content that changes occasionally and can be rebuilt when updated.
  • Potential mismatch: information that must reflect the latest value on every request, such as live market or inventory data, or pages whose output is personalized per visitor.
  • Mixed approach: prebuild the stable parts, then fetch changing information in the browser or render selected pages on the server when requested.

Astro’s documentation describes content collections as appropriate for relatively stable content and distinguishes them from data requiring up-to-the-moment freshness. Next.js likewise documents client-side fetching and server rendering as alternatives when pre-rendering does not fit. These are workflow distinctions, not a guarantee that every SSG or hosting arrangement will be faster.

How to choose a static site generator

1. Decide what can be prepared ahead of time

List the pages and identify what determines their output. If a page is based on editorial content or data that changes on a predictable publishing schedule, build-time generation may work well. If it depends on a value that must be current for every request or on a visitor’s identity, plan a client-side or server-rendered component instead of forcing the whole page into a static build.

2. Set the freshness requirement

“Updated regularly” is not the same as “must be current on every request.” Establish how quickly a published change must appear and how the site will rebuild or refresh after an update. A daily catalog or a frequently edited documentation site may still be suitable for generation if its update workflow meets that requirement; a live price feed usually needs a request-time or client-side path for the changing value.

3. Match the content model and authoring formats

Check how editors will create, organize, validate, and reuse content. Astro documents local content loaders for Markdown, MDX, Markdoc, YAML, TOML, and JSON. Jekyll documents Markdown pages and configurable collections. Those examples illustrate why format support and organization should be checked in the specific tool’s documentation rather than assumed from the label “static site generator.”

Ask whether content lives in files, collections, or another system; whether writers need Markdown or a richer format; and whether the generator can represent the site’s categories, metadata, and reusable content without a fragile collection of workarounds.

4. Choose for the team that will maintain it

Compare the language, framework conventions, templating approach, integrations, and build workflow the team can realistically own. A tool that fits the current developers and content editors can be a better choice than one with a longer feature list but an unfamiliar maintenance burden. Next.js is a broader web framework that offers static generation as one rendering mode; other tools focus more directly on content-driven sites. The useful comparison is capability and workflow, not a rigid argument about which tools deserve the SSG label.

5. Confirm the runtime and deployment path

Determine whether the build produces files that your hosting environment can serve directly, and how deploys will be triggered when content changes. Jekyll documents copying its generated directory to a host, including Amazon S3 as an example, as well as GitHub Pages. Static output can work with ordinary file hosting, but pages requiring request-time logic need a runtime or a separate client-side implementation.

Static site generator versus full framework

The categories overlap. A purpose-built generator may center its workflow on content and templates, while a full framework may provide several rendering modes, including static generation. Next.js presents static generation as one option; Gatsby’s comparison describes frameworks and generators in terms of static-content capabilities. Compare what a project actually needs: content formats, routing, rendering choices, integrations, and deployment—not just the product category.

Build-time generation versus request-time rendering

Approach When the page or data is prepared Useful when Trade-off to consider
Build-time generation Before visitors request the page Content is stable enough to publish as generated files, such as articles or documentation Changes depend on a rebuild or another refresh workflow; it is not by itself a solution for values that must be current on every request
Client-side data fetching The page loads in the visitor’s browser and requests changing data Only part of an otherwise prebuilt page needs current data The browser must fetch and display the changing information
Server-side rendering The server prepares the response when requested Output depends on request-time data or behavior Requires an appropriate server runtime rather than relying only on prebuilt files

Next.js recommends static generation when it fits, noting that a page can be built once and served by a CDN; that is the framework’s guidance, not a universal benchmark across tools, sites, or hosting setups. Choose the rendering mode to meet the content and behavior requirement first.

Does an SSG make a site faster?

It can avoid assembling a page on a server for every visit, and generated files can be served through a CDN. But no source here establishes a comparable speed ranking among generators, and real results depend on the site, its assets, hosting, client-side code, and delivery configuration. Treat “static” as an architectural choice, not a performance guarantee.

Common decision mistakes

  • Choosing by popularity or a blanket “fastest” claim: the relevant question is whether the tool’s workflow and output meet this project’s needs.
  • Calling all content static because it is published on a website: specify how fresh each data source must be, especially for per-request values.
  • Ignoring the people who publish and maintain the site: authoring formats and team familiarity affect long-term upkeep.
  • Assuming a static build excludes interactivity: client-side behavior can coexist with generated pages, and selected routes can use another rendering approach.
  • Leaving deployment until the end: establish where output files go and how rebuilds happen before committing to a content workflow.

If your static-site work includes capturing screenshots of generated pages for checks or documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

ScreenshotNeo also offers Python and Node.js examples, multiple image formats and PDF output, full-page and element capture, viewport and device options, custom waits and CSS, and asynchronous or bulk capture. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently asked questions

Can a static site have dynamic features?

Yes. Generated pages can include client-side JavaScript, and a site can use client-side fetching or server rendering for features that do not fit build-time generation.

Do I need to write the generated HTML by hand?

No. The generator transforms source content and templates into the output pages. You generally edit the inputs and rebuild the site rather than manually changing each generated HTML file.
