Scan for visual bugs by capturing representative pages and interaction states in a consistent browser environment, then comparing each screenshot with an approved baseline. A difference is a signal to inspect—not proof of a defect. Use Playwright Test for a self-managed workflow, or a hosted visual-testing service when your team needs its review and browser-coverage features.
What a visual regression scan does
A visual regression check renders a page and compares its screenshot with a reference image. It can reveal changes such as a shifted layout, missing image, unexpected color, or altered text wrapping. The comparison identifies pixels or regions that differ; a person still needs to decide whether a difference is an intended design change or a bug.
Playwright Test includes screenshot assertions through toHaveScreenshot(). On its first execution, the assertion creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the current rendering with that reference. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Choose pages and states that matter
Begin with pages and states that represent important user journeys and release risks. A small, deliberate suite is easier to maintain than a set of screenshots with no clear purpose.

- All-in-One Indoor Air Quality Monitor——9 Parameters and 7 Alerts:This home air quality monitor tracks 9 essential environmental indicators: CO2, PM2.5, PM10, PM1.0, AQI, HCHO, TVOC, temperature, and humidity. Beyond detection, it offers 7 user-defined alert thresholds for personalized monitoring. A tri-color LED system paired with clear icons allows for quick visual status checks. Once any reading reaches Level 4 or higher, the display prompts a flashing "Open Windows for Ventilation" suggestion. Users can disable audible alarms with a single press while keeping all visual notifications active.
- 0.001 High-Precision Sensor with Real-Time Response:This air quality meter features a high-precision sensor with 0.001-level detection sensitivity. The unit samples at 1.5-second intervals and refreshes readings every 1 to 2 seconds, enabling continuous real-time data capture. Temperature measurement ranges from 14°F to 122°F with accuracy of ±1°F to ±3°F, while humidity ranges from 0% to 99% RH with accuracy of ±2% RH to ±3% RH. This professional-grade performance is particularly suited for homes with infants, allergy sufferers, and individuals with respiratory sensitivities, as well as office settings where indoor air quality directly affects work efficiency and overall well-being.
- Large 7.2-Inch Screen with 3-Stage Adjustable Brightness:The 7.2-inch display on this air quality tester organizes all readings in a clean, readable format with generously sized text for easy viewing from across the room. Its backlight offers three adjustable levels — Dim, Medium, and Bright — and automatically switches to the highest setting the moment any parameter triggers an alert. This ensures that warnings remain highly visible at all times. The unit is especially well-suited for family environments with young children or pets, delivering consistent and trustworthy air data in living areas, bedrooms, and nursery rooms.
- Easy Operation and Portable Design:This air quality detector operates without the need for app installations or WiFi connections — simply power it on and it begins working immediately. Display preferences are fully customizable, including 12/24-hour clock formats and Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature scales. A one-touch reset button allows for quick sensor recalibration whenever needed. The lightweight, compact body makes it easy to carry from one room to another, whether monitoring conditions in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, or even inside a vehicle for comprehensive air quality assessment across different environments.
- Wireless Operation with All-Day Battery Performance:This smart air quality monitor runs on a built-in 2500mAh rechargeable battery that supports up to 8 hours of uninterrupted wireless use per full charge. Recharging is simplified with a USB-C port, compatible with most modern charging accessories. With no cords to restrict placement, the air monitor indoor can be positioned freely in any room — from living spaces and bedrooms to home offices and kitchens — while maintaining continuous air quality tracking throughout the day.
- Cover key templates and high-traffic or business-critical pages.
- Include meaningful interaction states, such as an open menu, expanded panel, or validation message—not only the initial page.
- Test responsive layouts at the viewport sizes your audience uses and your team supports.
- Add browsers or device configurations when they are relevant to your users and release risk.
Keep the test data and page state repeatable. A screenshot taken with different content, a different viewport, or a different interaction state may produce a diff that says little about whether the design regressed.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png', { fullPage: true });
});
Run it with npx playwright test. The first run creates the expected screenshot; inspect and commit that image only if it represents the intended design. Subsequent runs compare against the committed reference. Review generated diffs when an assertion fails, and update the baseline only after confirming the change is intentional.
Playwright documents screenshot options and cautions that rendering may vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare screenshots in the same environment where possible. Pin or standardize those conditions, along with viewport and test data, to reduce noise; stabilize animations or dynamic content when they obscure the change you need to detect.

Control noisy diffs and review changes
Not every screenshot difference is actionable. Separate environmental or content variation from a user-visible regression before changing a baseline.
- Keep conditions steady: run baseline generation and comparisons with consistent operating-system, browser, viewport, and headless settings.
- Stabilize the page: use predictable test data and ensure the same interaction state is captured on every run. Address animations and dynamic content when they make comparisons unreliable.
- Inspect the changed region: use the diff to locate what moved or changed, then check the rendered page in context.
- Decide before accepting: confirm whether the change was intended. A baseline update records a new expectation; it does not fix an accidental regression.

Troubleshoot failed or inconsistent comparisons
- Diffs change between runs: compare screenshots under the same browser, operating system, viewport, settings, and headless mode. Playwright identifies these as possible sources of rendering variation.
- First run creates a screenshot instead of reporting a regression: that is the baseline-generation step. Review the image before treating it as the expected appearance.
- Lots of changes appear in a page with live content: make test data and interaction state repeatable, and stabilize dynamic content or animations that are not the subject of the test.
- A failed assertion may be an intentional redesign: inspect the diff and confirm the intended result before updating the reference image.
- Only one viewport or browser passes: add the other viewport or browser configurations that matter to your audience and release risk, then manage separate expectations for those conditions.
Keep checks useful in CI
Run visual tests alongside the browser tests that establish page behavior, and make the comparison environment reproducible. Store approved references with the test suite so changes can be reviewed as code changes. When a diff appears, route it for review rather than automatically replacing the baseline. Expand browser and viewport coverage deliberately: each added configuration can expose differences that a single rendering environment cannot show, but it also adds expectations the team must maintain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot difference mean the page has a visual bug?
No. It means the rendered image changed. Review the changed area and determine whether the change was intended before updating the baseline.
Can I use screenshot comparisons to test responsive layouts?
Yes. Capture the same relevant pages at the viewport sizes your audience uses, and keep each run’s viewport consistent with its reference.
Why are screenshot tests flaky?
Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Dynamic content, animations, or inconsistent test state can also make screenshots harder to compare reliably.
