There is no single payload or price figure that makes Starship and NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) directly comparable. SpaceX describes Starship as designed to carry more than 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit in a fully reusable configuration; NASA lists 27 metric tons to the Moon for SLS Block 1. Those numbers describe different destinations. Starship is designed for reuse but has not yet demonstrated routine, full-system operations, while SLS is expendable. Public cost figures also use different accounting boundaries, so they do not establish which rocket is cheaper per launch.
Payload capacity depends on where the rocket is going
A payload number is meaningful only when it identifies the destination, vehicle configuration, and mission assumptions. Earth orbit, deep space, and the lunar destination are not interchangeable measures. In particular, Starship’s Earth-orbit specification is not a claim that it can deliver the same mass to the Moon.

| Vehicle and configuration | Published payload figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Starship and Super Heavy, fully reusable configuration | More than 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit | SpaceX’s design specification on its current vehicle page, accessed October 4, 2026. It is a company-stated Earth-orbit capability, not a lunar-delivery figure. |
| SLS Block 1 | 27 metric tons (59,525 pounds) to the Moon | NASA’s current SLS reference-page figure for the configuration used on Artemis I and planned for Artemis II and III; page accessed in 2026. |
| SLS Block 1B, crew configuration | 38 metric tons to deep space | NASA’s stated configuration figure, including Orion and crew. GAO reported in May 2026 that the Block 1B project had been canceled, so this is not a description of an active Block 1B rocket program. |
| SLS Block 1B, cargo-only configuration | More than 42 metric tons to the Moon | NASA’s described cargo-only capability. The same Block 1B project-status caveat applies. |
| SLS Block 2 | Up to 46 metric tons to deep space | NASA’s design capability for a future configuration, not a directly comparable delivered-to-the-Moon or Earth-orbit figure. |
The SLS figures above come from NASA’s current SLS reference page, accessed in 2026; Block 1B’s cancellation is reported by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2026. For Starship, SpaceX’s figure is a vendor design claim. Differences in destination and configuration matter more than which number is largest.

Why an Earth-orbit figure does not answer the lunar question
Getting cargo to Earth orbit is one stage of a lunar delivery architecture. SpaceX’s stated Starship lunar approach relies on refilling propellant in orbit; the amount delivered to the Moon therefore depends on the complete mission architecture, including refueling. A capacity to Earth orbit cannot be treated as the mass delivered to the lunar surface.

Why SLS figures vary by block
SLS is not one unchanging configuration. Block 1’s lunar capability differs from NASA’s larger design figures for Block 1B and Block 2. The Block 1B status change is especially important: NASA has published specifications for it, but GAO reported that its project was canceled in May 2026. Treat the 38-ton and cargo-only figures as descriptions of the canceled configuration, not as a current operational offering.
Which rocket is reusable?
Starship is designed to return and reuse both its upper stage and its Super Heavy booster. The booster is intended to return to the launch site for capture by the launch tower. SLS, by contrast, is an expendable architecture: its core stage and solid boosters are not recovered for routine reuse.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
Design intent and demonstrated operational maturity are different things. SpaceX calls Starship a “fully reusable transportation system,” but that is the company’s description of the design, not evidence that the complete system is in routine service.
What Starship flight tests had demonstrated through October 2025
NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), reporting on the test campaign through 2025, recorded 11 integrated flight tests from April 2023 through October 2025. The milestones included a propellant-transfer demonstration between tanks on Flight 3, controlled Starship and booster landings on Flight 4, and a booster catch on Flight 5. Flights 7–9 ended with vehicle losses. The OIG also noted planned vehicle-to-vehicle propellant-transfer work in 2026.

These milestones show progress on return, landing, capture, and propellant-transfer technologies. They do not establish routine turnaround, successful reuse of both stages across regular missions, or an airline-like launch cadence. A successful landing or catch is not the same as proving that a vehicle can be inspected, refurbished, and relaunched reliably at scale.
Is Starship cheaper than SLS?
Available public figures do not support a defensible universal answer to “which rocket is cheaper per launch?” The figures commonly cited refer to different things: a planned lunar cargo service rate, development costs for a particular SLS project, or broader mission costs. Comparing them as if they were equivalent launch prices would be misleading.

| Published figure | Scope and source | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| $100 million per metric ton | SpaceX’s planned lunar cargo service rate on its current vehicle page, accessed October 4, 2026; flights are listed as starting no earlier than 2028. | It is a company-published, destination-specific planned service rate—not a general price for launching to Earth orbit, nor an independently validated estimate of Starship’s operating cost. |
| $4.9 billion baseline; a projected 6.2% increase | GAO’s 2026 assessment of SLS Block 1B development costs. The projected increase is against the development scope committed to that baseline in August 2025. | These are project development figures, not a per-flight price. They concern Block 1B, whose project GAO reported canceled in May 2026. |
There is no directly comparable, independently validated Starship-versus-SLS per-launch price in these published figures. SpaceX’s claim that Starship will have lower marginal costs is a company claim, not a demonstrated comparison of operating economics. A fair comparison would need to hold constant what is counted: vehicle production, launch operations, mission integration, ground infrastructure, development costs, Orion, destination, and mass actually delivered.

Configuration and schedule status should be read with a date attached. GAO’s 2026 assessment reports the cancellation of the SLS Block 1B project and gives its development-cost baseline and projected increase. NASA OIG’s March 10, 2026 summary of its Human Landing System audit says that lander development challenges will delay planned Artemis launch dates. That audit concerns lunar-lander development; it is not a new payload rating or per-launch price for either rocket.
