You can make a Windows PC feel more like a Chromebook by using a browser-first routine: set Chrome or Edge as your default, install frequently used websites as apps, pin a small set of them to Start or the taskbar, and optionally use cloud storage and phone integration. This changes how you work; it does not convert Windows into ChromeOS, and your Windows apps and settings remain available.
Choose a browser and make it your default
For a Google-centered setup, use Chrome and set it as the default browser. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for Chrome, select Google Chrome, then choose Set default. Review the file and link associations shown there. In Windows 10, open Settings > Default apps and choose Chrome under Web browser. See Google’s instructions for making Chrome the default browser.

Making Chrome the default does not redirect every Windows link. Windows Search web results are powered by Bing and open in Edge, and some Windows apps and widgets depend on Edge. Microsoft explains these dependencies in its Edge apps and widgets overview.

A Chromebook-style workflow often starts with a few sites you use every day, such as email, a calendar, documents, or music. In Chrome, open a supported web app and use its app controls to install or manage it. Chrome’s web-app guide also describes app shortcuts through chrome://apps and setting an app to launch when you sign in.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Edge can do something similar. Install a progressive web app (PWA) from the app icon in the address bar, or use Settings and more > More tools > Apps. You can also install a site as an app for a dedicated window, but Microsoft notes that this simpler option has fewer capabilities than a PWA. Keep Edge installed if you use Edge-based apps, PWAs, or widgets.
Check each app’s offline behavior
An app-like window does not mean a website works fully offline. Some web apps offer features such as offline storage, notifications, file-system access, or badges, but Google warns that some may not work completely without an internet connection. Test anything you need before travelling or working somewhere without reliable internet; do not assume that an installed site has saved everything locally.

Pin a small set of apps to Start or the taskbar
Pin your everyday web apps where you can open them quickly: to Start, the taskbar, or both. ChromeOS uses installation, pinning to the shelf, and launcher discovery as core web-app patterns; Windows pins approximate the quick-access part of that experience. Chrome and Edge provide app shortcuts and pinning options in their respective app workflows.
Begin with a few essentials. Add another site only if its dedicated window makes it easier to use than a normal browser tab. This is a practical way to keep the launcher useful rather than turning it into a collection of every website you have visited.

Choose local files, cloud files, or a mix
Cloud storage is optional, not a prerequisite for making Windows more browser-centered. Google describes Chromebook files as something users can keep on the device or store online through a service such as Google Drive. The same broad choice applies to your workflow: local files keep a copy on the PC, while cloud files can make access across devices more convenient.
| File habit | Useful when | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Keep files locally | You mainly work on one PC or prefer files stored on that device. | Plan how you will access or back up important files from another device. |
| Use cloud storage | You want files available across devices through your chosen service. | Check the service’s own offline behavior before relying on files without a connection. |
| Use both | You want cloud access for some work and local copies for other files. | Decide which files need a local copy or backup rather than assuming everything is available offline. |
Google confirms the local-or-online choice in its Chromebook overview. You do not need to move every Windows file to Google Drive to adopt a browser-first routine.

Use Phone Link only if your phone and PC qualify
Phone Link is an optional way to bring selected phone features onto Windows, not a universal Android-app layer. Microsoft lists support for Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later and Windows 11, Android 10 or later, and a phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network. Supported experiences vary by device; Microsoft lists selected Android, Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, and vivo phones. Multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts are not currently supported. Check Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup for the current details.

Depending on the phone, Phone Link can show texts, calls, notifications, recent photos, and selected Android apps. Those apps are mirrored from the phone rather than installed on the PC. Using multiple Android apps simultaneously requires Android 11 and a select Samsung or HONOR phone; most other supported devices are limited to one app at a time. See Microsoft’s guide to using Android apps on a PC before counting on that feature.

Pick Chrome or Edge based on the experience you want
| Consideration | Chrome | Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A Google-centered browser workflow. | A workflow that uses Edge-backed Windows apps, PWAs, or widgets. |
| App options | Supported web apps can be installed and managed through Chrome’s app controls. | PWAs can be installed; a basic site-as-app window is available but has fewer capabilities. |
| Windows integration | Can be made the default browser, subject to Windows features that still use Edge. | Some Windows apps and widgets depend on Edge. |
| Capability to check | Whether the individual app supports the offline, notification, or file features you need. | Whether the site offers a PWA or only the more limited site-as-app option, and what capabilities it provides. |
Neither browser makes every website behave like a full desktop application. Choose based on the sites you use, their actual app features, and which browser fits your existing account and Windows habits.
