Choose a desk converter if your current desk works and you want to add an adjustable raised work area. Choose a full height-adjustable desk if you are replacing the desk or need the entire tabletop to move. Either option is a good fit only if it lets you work at suitable seated and standing heights, accommodates your equipment, and supports a neutral posture.
What is the difference?
| Consideration | Desk converter | Full height-adjustable desk |
|---|---|---|
| What moves | A platform placed on your existing desk raises the work area. | The entire tabletop moves. |
| Existing furniture | Keeps your desk; measure its usable width and depth first. | Replaces your existing desk. |
| Equipment layout | Check platform space, keyboard tray, monitor height, and model load limit. Some designs separate the keyboard and monitor platforms. | Check tabletop space, equipment capacity, cable routing, and storage arrangements. |
| Ergonomic fit | It needs to lower sufficiently for seated work and raise the keyboard to standing elbow height. The monitor may need separate adjustment. | It needs to reach suitable seated and standing work heights while supporting neutral arm, wrist, and head positions. |
| Best starting point | When your current desk works and you do not want to replace it. | When replacing the desk or when moving the whole surface suits your setup better. |
These are category-level differences, not claims that one type is universally more stable, durable, ergonomic, or cost-effective. Those qualities depend on the specific model; the available guidance does not provide a neutral, model-by-model performance comparison.

How to decide which fits your setup
Choose a converter if you want to keep your desk
Start by measuring the desk’s usable width and depth, then compare those dimensions with the converter’s footprint. Check that the raised platform has room for the equipment you need, including your keyboard and mouse, and that the model’s adjustment range and load limit suit your setup. Fellowes’ guidance on converting a desk and the University of Manitoba fact sheet both emphasize checking fit and equipment arrangement.

Pay particular attention to the monitor and keyboard positions. Some converters put them on separate platforms; in other designs, the monitor may not rise to a comfortable viewing height when the keyboard is at the right level. If the screen stays too low, a separately adjustable monitor position, such as with a monitor arm, may help.

Choose a full desk if the whole surface needs to move
A full height-adjustable desk is the more direct option if you are replacing your desk or want your computer, keyboard, and other equipment to rise together. Check the tabletop dimensions, load capacity, and usable height range against your actual equipment and measurements. A broad stated adjustment range is not enough by itself: the desk still needs to reach your suitable seated and standing heights.
Use fit—not the product category—as the deciding test
Measure or estimate your elbow height while seated and standing, then check whether the selected setup can place the keyboard appropriately in both positions. The University of Manitoba fact sheet illustrates why individual measurements matter: its examples include a seated elbow height of about 22 inches for a shorter worker, about 29 inches for a taller worker, and a standing elbow height of about 48 inches for a taller worker. These are examples from the fact sheet, not target measurements for every person or specifications for every desk.

How to set up either option
- Set the work surface to your body. For standing work, place the platform or tabletop approximately at elbow height. Adjust it again for seated work rather than assuming one setting will fit both positions.
- Position the keyboard and mouse. Keep hands, wrists, and forearms straight and roughly parallel to the floor. Relax your shoulders and keep elbows close to your body. Arrange the keyboard and mouse as you would for comfortable seated work.
- Adjust the monitor. Place it so viewing does not require an awkward head position. If a converter puts the keyboard at a good height but leaves the screen too low, adjust the screen separately.
- Check standing comfort. Wear supportive footwear; consider an anti-fatigue mat if appropriate. Shift your weight or use a footrest rather than remaining rigidly in one position. A mat does not make prolonged standing safe or replace movement.
- Vary position and move. Alternate between sitting and standing as needed, make small chair adjustments, stretch, and walk around periodically. OSHA recommends changing position frequently; the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) says recommendations for sit-stand intervals vary and emphasizes alternating as needed.
How long should you sit or stand?
There is no single interval established by the cited guidance as right for everyone. CCOHS notes that recommendations range from brief standing periods to longer alternations, and advises allowing time to adjust. Its central advice is: “The key factor is to alternate your position as needed.” Standing longer is not automatically better; CCOHS warns that prolonged standing can contribute to foot, knee, hip, and back issues.

Use comfort and the demands of your work to guide position changes. If standing causes discomfort, sit, move, or adjust the workstation rather than treating a sit-stand desk as a reason to stand continuously.

What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
CCOHS’s sit-stand guidance, which displays a modified date of September 17, 2026, supports the setup and movement advice above. The University of Manitoba fact sheet is older and is useful for general fit considerations, not as a current specification for any particular product. Neither source establishes current product prices or availability, or a universal winner for stability, durability, or performance.
