Panasonic warns that mismatches can cause uneven discharge, over-discharge and leakage. Check the device manual: only follow a mixing exception when the manufacturer explicitly permits it for your exact model and operating mode.
Why mixing batteries can cause problems
Cells in a multi-battery device may not discharge at the same rate when their capacities or charge levels differ. In a series group, a weaker or more depleted cell can run out while the others still have energy. Panasonic warns that over-discharging the weaker cell can damage it or cause leakage; Energizer also cautions that capacity differences can reduce performance and shorten the lower-capacity cell’s cycle life. These are manufacturer warnings, not a quantified prediction for every device or battery combination.

Panasonic advises against mixing batteries with different capacities, types, brands or ages. Different charging and use histories can also leave cells at uneven charge levels, even if they otherwise seem similar. Its eneloop FAQ says, “Do not mix batteries of different capacities, types, brands, or ages in your device.”
How to make a matched set
- Match chemistry and type. Do not combine rechargeable cells with a different battery type, such as alkaline primary cells, unless the device maker explicitly allows it. Never put non-rechargeable batteries in a rechargeable-cell charger.
- Match capacity, brand and age. Use cells of the same capacity and brand, and preferably similar age and condition.
- Keep charge and use histories together. Charge and use the cells as a group; do not routinely move one cell between devices or mix charged and partly depleted cells.
- Replace the whole set. If one cell needs replacing, replace all the cells used together in that device rather than pairing a new cell with older ones. Panasonic recommends changing the set together.
- Check the device manual. Confirm the required cell size and chemistry, and look for any explicit allowance for mixing. Device instructions take precedence over general advice.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, but they are model- and mode-specific. Panasonic’s Japanese support answer identifies five products—BQ-CC87, BQ-CC91, BQ-CCA3, BH-BZ40 and BF-BL45—that can allow specified mixed-battery use in certain modes because they individually detect or control battery condition. That does not make mixed cells suitable for other devices. Check the current manual for the exact model and mode; Panasonic warns that mixing in other devices can cause heating, leakage, rupture, injury or device failure. What if different batteries are already installed?
Do not assume the set is safe just because the device currently works. Turn the device off and follow its manual to remove or replace the cells. Use a compatible, matched set, and use a charger specified for that battery type and model. Energizer likewise cautions that charger suitability depends on the battery and charger models; its rechargeable batteries and chargers FAQ is general guidance, not a substitute for current model instructions.
