Stablecoin Cards vs. Traditional Prepaid Cards: Which Should You Use?

Traditional prepaid cards are easier to compare using disclosed fees and defined protections. Stablecoin-card costs, custody, redemption, and dispute terms vary by provider.

If you want everyday spending with terms you can readily compare, a traditional prepaid card is easier to evaluate: the CFPB describes standardized fee disclosures and certain protections for covered accounts. A stablecoin card may suit you if you already hold stablecoins and want to spend them, but its costs, custody, conversion, redemption, availability, and dispute rules depend on the specific product. Neither a stablecoin’s reserves nor the word “card” alone tells you whether your funds are insured or how you can recover them.

What are you comparing?

“Traditional prepaid card” covers more than one kind of account, including general-purpose reloadable cards, payroll cards, government-benefit cards, and other prepaid products. An open-loop card carries a payment-network logo and can generally be used wherever that network is accepted; a closed-loop card is limited to designated merchants or systems. The CFPB notes that “Prepaid cards have different features, functions, and fees.” CFPB: Choose the Right Card for Your Situation.

A “stablecoin card” is not one standardized account type. It can link a payment card to a wallet or custodial service that holds stablecoins, with a provider-specific process for converting or redeeming them for a purchase. The card issuer, wallet or custodian, stablecoin issuer, and conversion path may be different entities. The card agreement and service terms determine how a particular arrangement works.

How do the two options compare?

Question Traditional prepaid card Stablecoin card
What determines the cost? Check the card’s fee chart for charges that match your use, such as monthly, purchase, ATM, reload, inactivity, foreign-transaction, and replacement fees. Not every card charges every listed fee. Check the specific card and wallet terms for card fees, conversion costs or spread, and any redemption charges. A category-wide fee comparison is not established.
How are funds held? For eligible prepaid funds, deposit insurance depends on the account records, ownership, and other requirements; it is not automatic. Find out who holds the stablecoins, who controls access or keys, and whether a separate bank account is involved. Stablecoin reserves are not the same thing as a cardholder’s insured bank deposit.
How do you spend or access cash? Check the network acceptance, purchase and ATM charges, and available cash reload methods in the card terms. Check the supported network, merchant acceptance, ATM access, supported stablecoins, conversion timing, and how the provider turns holdings into spendable funds.
What happens if there is a problem? Certain covered accounts have federal error-resolution protections. Read the agreement for the applicable process and any additional network terms. Check the named provider’s rules for unauthorized transactions, disputes, freezes, lost cards, service outages, and redeeming or withdrawing the underlying stablecoins.
Where can you use it? Acceptance depends on whether it is open-loop or closed-loop and on the relevant network or merchant system. Geographic availability and supported transactions are product-specific; verify both before funding the account.

The table is a comparison framework, not a claim that every product in either category offers the same features. For stablecoin cards in particular, the provider’s current agreement and fee disclosures are essential to making a fair comparison.

  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

What fees should you compare on a prepaid card?

Use the card’s fee chart and agreement to estimate the cost of a realistic month, rather than choosing by a headline monthly fee. The CFPB lists possible charges including:

  • Monthly usage, per-purchase or transaction, and inactivity fees.
  • ATM withdrawals and balance inquiries.
  • Cash reloads, customer service, paper statements, declined transactions, and card-to-card transfers.
  • Bill payment, stop payment, replacement or additional cards, cancellation, and foreign transactions.

Not every prepaid card charges all of these. Which ones matter depends on how you load and use the card. CFPB rules establish upfront fee disclosures for covered prepaid accounts; the CFPB explains the protections and rule scope on its Protections for prepaid accounts page and in its prepaid-account rule.

Are stablecoin cards safer than prepaid cards?

There is no category-wide answer supported by the available product terms. A prepaid card is easier to assess against its fee disclosures and applicable account protections, but that does not mean every prepaid card is insured or that every loss is covered. A stablecoin card adds product-specific questions about custody, conversion, redemption, and the service providers involved. Compare the written terms for the actual accounts rather than treating either category label as a safety guarantee.

Does a stablecoin card have FDIC insurance?

Do not assume that stablecoin reserves are an FDIC-insured deposit owned by you. In guidance last updated May 13, 2020, the FDIC says prepaid funds may qualify for deposit insurance when required records disclose the custodial relationship, identify the actual owners and amounts, and the deposits are legally owned by cardholders. If those conditions are met, coverage is up to $250,000, aggregated with other funds held in the same ownership category at the same insured bank. That insurance protects against the failure of the insured bank; it does not itself protect against a lost or stolen card or a prepaid provider’s bankruptcy. See the FDIC’s prepaid-card deposit-insurance guidance.

Separately, in an April 7, 2026 proposed rule to implement aspects of the GENIUS Act, the FDIC said deposits held as reserves backing a payment stablecoin would not be insured to payment-stablecoin holders on a pass-through basis under that proposal. This is a proposal about stablecoin reserve deposits, not a final-rule statement or a determination about every card-linked account. It also does not decide the treatment of a distinct bank account a card program might use. The FDIC’s proposal announcement and notice of proposed rulemaking describe its scope.

How to choose before you fund an account

  1. Estimate your real use. For a prepaid card, total the fees likely to apply to your monthly purchases, cash access, reloads, and other routine actions. For a stablecoin card, include conversion and redemption costs disclosed by that provider.
  2. Trace the money. Identify whether your balance is fiat, stablecoins, or a combination; where each is held; who controls access; and what the agreement says about custody and bank deposits.
  3. Check access and geography. Confirm the card network and acceptance, ATM and reload options, supported stablecoins, and whether the service is available where you live and travel.
  4. Read the problem-resolution terms. Find the procedure and deadlines for reporting unauthorized transactions or errors, and what the provider says happens if the card is lost, an account is frozen, or a service is unavailable.
  5. Check redemption before depositing. For stablecoins, establish how you can convert or withdraw them, the timing and costs, and what the terms say about access if the card account is frozen. There is no universal answer to whether you can get stablecoins back; that depends on the named provider’s agreement.

Choose a traditional prepaid card if its disclosed costs and protections fit the way you spend and you value a more familiar, inspectable account structure. Consider a stablecoin card only if its specific custody, conversion, redemption, availability, and dispute terms work for you—not simply because the underlying token is described as stable.
