Monstera deliciosa fruit is often described as banana-like with pineapple notes, while cherimoya has soft, creamy flesh and a delicate, low-acidity flavor. The main safety difference is ripeness: eat Monstera only when its segments loosen and the pulp separates easily from the core. Cherimoya flesh is eaten fresh, but its seeds and other plant parts are not food.
How do Monstera fruit and cherimoya taste?
Monstera deliciosa
Descriptions of ripe Monstera deliciosa fruit commonly compare its flavor to banana and pineapple, sometimes with mango or jackfruit notes. These are subjective comparisons from separate botanical accounts, not a precise flavor formula or the result of a controlled tasting. Wisconsin Extension describes banana, pineapple, and mango; other botanical descriptions mention pineapple, banana, or jackfruit (Wisconsin Extension; UF/IFAS Extension).

Cherimoya
UC Cooperative Extension describes cherimoya as having a delicate fruit flavor with little acidity. Its taste is sometimes likened to custard, but that analogy is only a general description, not a fixed or objective flavor measure (UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County).

How do their textures and flesh differ?
- Monstera: The edible pulp forms segments around a core. Only take sections that separate readily from the core; the core itself is not eaten (UF/IFAS Extension).
- Cherimoya: The flesh is soft, creamy, and pear-like, with a non-gritty texture. The fruit contains seeds that must be removed rather than eaten (UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County).
Both fruits are eaten for their flesh, but their structure differs: Monstera’s edible pulp is segmented around a core, while cherimoya’s soft flesh surrounds numerous seeds.
How can you tell when each fruit is ripe?
Monstera deliciosa ripens from the base upward
A mature Monstera fruit ready for harvest becomes lighter green, and its tile-like basal segments begin to separate and bulge. After harvest, UF/IFAS says it can ripen at room temperature; ripening advances from the base toward the tip. The scales dry and fall away to expose pulp as sections ripen. Eat only the exposed pulp that falls or separates easily from the core (UF/IFAS Extension; Wisconsin Extension).
UF/IFAS describes a room-temperature post-harvest method of 78–82°F (about 26–28°C) for 5–6 days. This is its guidance, not a guarantee for every fruit or room. The pulp can be refrigerated for several days after ripening (UF/IFAS Extension).

UC Davis lists a change from dark green toward light green or greenish yellow as a primary maturity cue. Cream color showing between the fruit segments and smoother-looking individual carpels are additional signs. Cherimoyas are relatively soft, so handle them carefully to limit bruising (UC Davis Postharvest Research and Extension Center).

- Stored: Refrigerated.
A 1999 UC Davis fact sheet recommends storage at 8–12°C (46–54°F), depending on cultivar, ripeness, and storage duration. It warns that colder exposure can cause chilling injury, including darkened or hardened skin, pitting, failure to develop full flavor, and mealy flesh. Treat this as attributed postharvest guidance from that fact sheet, not an unqualified current commercial standard (UC Davis Postharvest Research and Extension Center).
Which parts are safe to eat?
Monstera: only ripe Monstera deliciosa pulp
Edibility guidance here applies to Monstera deliciosa, not to every Monstera houseplant or species. Immature fruit sections contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Eating them can cause immediate, painful irritation in the mouth or throat; do not eat sections whose scales remain firmly attached. Do not sample leaves, stems, or sap, and UF/IFAS cautions against consuming large quantities at once (UF/IFAS Extension; Wisconsin Extension).

- Exotic fruit with sweet, juicy, creamy white flesh!
- Fruits are round or heart shaped with green outer skin
- Can be enjoyed chilled and eaten with a spoon or as a delicious drink
- Deciduous shrub/tree reaching about 30 feet - Prefers sun.
- "The most delicious fruit known to men" Quote - Mark Twain
Even ripe fruit may cause a reaction in some people. Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre reports that rapidly developing hives can occur. Seek urgent medical attention if lips or tongue swell, or if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult (Queensland Poisons Information Centre).
Cherimoya: eat the flesh, discard the seeds
Cherimoya is commonly eaten fresh; its flesh is also used in ice cream and sherbets. UC Cooperative Extension warns that the seeds, leaves, and limbs contain poisonous alkaloids and should be regarded as poisonous if taken internally. Remove and discard the seeds; do not chew or swallow them or use other plant parts as food or home remedies (UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County).

- Package - Seeds include 100 Grape 100 Apple 100 Kiwi 10 Cherimoya 100 Mulberry 20 Cherry, a total of 430 seeds
- Hardiness Zone - These plants are suitable in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8. Blueberry plants are perennial plants
- Delicious fresh fruit - Fruit can be eaten fresh, made into pies or jelly, or grown as ornamental plants
- Growth rate - Fruit bushes are easy to grow and can be grown on dry rocky soils, sandy soils, gravelly soils, as well as heavy clay soils
- Sowing - Simply spread the seeds evenly over the soil and cover with a thin layer. Do not make the mulch thick. Keep moist, lay flat in a warm room (60 to 70 degrees F), and cover with paper. The seeds will germinate in about 1 month
How should you prepare them?
- Monstera: Allow the fruit to ripen, remove only the pulp that readily falls or separates from the core, and leave any firm, unripe sections uneaten. UF/IFAS describes eating the ripe pulp fresh or using it in desserts (UF/IFAS Extension).
- Cherimoya: Eat the ripe flesh fresh or use it in preparations such as ice cream or sherbet. Remove and discard the seeds rather than treating them as edible parts (UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County).
This is general food and plant-safety information, not individual medical advice. If someone eats unripe Monstera or develops swelling, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing, contact local emergency or poison services promptly.
