Neither OLED nor IPS is automatically better for a laptop. OLED is usually the stronger pick for deep blacks and high-contrast entertainment; IPS can be the better-value fit for productivity, a matte screen, or a particular brightness, refresh rate, or power profile. Compare the exact laptop display configuration—not just its panel label.
What differs between OLED and IPS?
OLED pixels emit their own light, so they can switch off individually to display black. That gives OLED a clear advantage for dark scenes and high-contrast images. IPS is a type of LCD: it uses a backlight, so it cannot switch off individual pixels in the same way.

That basic difference does not make every OLED display better overall. Resolution, brightness, screen finish, color performance, refresh rate, power use, and price all depend on the specific laptop and screen option.

For everyday productivity, choose the laptop with the better overall fit. An IPS model may make more sense if it costs less, has a matte or anti-glare finish that suits your workspace, or is preferable for long sessions with static content. A capable IPS panel can still have high resolution, brightness, color gamut, and refresh rate; IPS alone does not tell you whether a screen is basic or premium.

ASUS recommends IPS for productivity in its manufacturer comparison. Treat that as vendor guidance, not an independent test or a rule that applies to every laptop.
Movies, dark games, and visual entertainment
OLED is attractive if deep blacks and high contrast are priorities, especially in dark scenes. But the OLED label does not guarantee a particular HDR tier, peak brightness, or reflection handling. Check the exact screen’s brightness rating, HDR capability, refresh rate, and finish against the room where you will use it.
Photo, video, and color-sensitive work
Either technology can suit color-focused work. Look for a sufficiently wide color gamut, measured color accuracy, calibration options, and the color modes your workflow needs. A wide-gamut screen can still show unreliable colors if it is not properly calibrated or color-managed.

For example, Lenovo lists both OLED and IPS options for the Legion Pro 5i Gen 10 at 100% DCI-P3. That specification indicates gamut coverage, not that both displays have identical accuracy. ASUS advertises up to 100% DCI-P3 for its OLED range; confirm the specification for the exact laptop configuration.

Compare the exact screen specifications
Contrast and black levels
OLED’s self-lit pixels can turn off to produce black, which helps it show dark scenes with strong contrast. A model-specific comparison illustrates the scale of the difference without defining the whole market: Dell lists a typical 100000:1 contrast ratio for the OLED option in its XPS 15 7590 specifications, compared with 1500:1 typical for each of its two listed IPS options. These are specifications for that historical laptop, not universal benchmarks.
Refresh rate and response time
Refresh rate describes how often the screen can update; response time describes how quickly pixels change. They are different measures, so check both for the exact configuration rather than assuming one follows from the panel type.
Lenovo’s Legion Pro 5i Gen 10 listing includes an IPS configuration at 240 Hz and an OLED configuration at 165 Hz. ASUS advertises up to 120 Hz and a 0.2 ms response time for its laptop OLED range. These are manufacturer-published, configuration-dependent claims; verify the SKU and regional listing before comparing them.

Brightness and screen finish
Brightness ratings alone do not tell you how a screen will look in your workspace. Consider whether the display is glossy or matte, how much ambient light and glare it will face, and whether the quoted brightness applies to the exact screen you are buying. Dell’s XPS 15 7590 specifications show different finishes among display configurations, underscoring why a panel label is not enough.

Power and battery life
There is no reliable battery-life rule based only on OLED versus IPS. Resolution and the rest of the laptop configuration matter, and a screen’s maximum power specification is not a whole-laptop battery test.
In Dell’s XPS 15 7590 specifications, maximum display power is listed as 14.80 W for the 4K OLED option, 10.41 W for the 4K IPS option, and 4.30 W for the FHD IPS option. Those figures describe specific display configurations; they do not establish how long a laptop will run on a charge. For a useful battery comparison, look for tests of the same laptop configuration under comparable conditions.
Consider static content and long-term use
Prolonged display of static, high-contrast content can cause image retention or burn-in on OLED displays. This is a consideration for workflows that keep the same interface elements on screen for long stretches; it does not mean burn-in is inevitable or establish when it might occur.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteASUS describes pixel refresh and pixel shift in its OLED Care feature set as ways to reduce risk. Such features are risk-reduction measures, not a guarantee against burn-in. If you expect to keep a laptop for years while displaying static content, check whether the exact model offers pixel-care features and read the warranty terms for your region.

A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the exact resolution, brightness, finish, and HDR capability for the laptop configuration in your market.
- For games or other fast-moving content, compare both refresh rate and response time.
- For color-sensitive work, check gamut, accuracy, calibration options, and usable color modes—not just whether the panel is OLED or IPS.
- If battery life matters, compare reviews of the same configuration under comparable conditions rather than relying on panel type or maximum display power alone.
- If your work leaves static content on screen for long periods, review OLED care features and the relevant regional warranty terms.
- Compare the complete laptop and its price; display technology is only one part of the decision.
Examples: why the laptop configuration matters
Manufacturer listings show how much specifications can vary even within a product family. Lenovo lists these Legion Pro 5i Gen 10 display characteristics, which may differ by market:
| Listed configuration | Refresh rate | Brightness | Color gamut |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPS | 240 Hz | 500 nits | 100% DCI-P3 |
| OLED | 165 Hz | 500 nits | 100% DCI-P3 |
These listed values do not establish which screen is better for every use. They show why buyers should compare the characteristics of the actual option rather than assume OLED always means a faster or more colorful display.
