Set your budget and priorities first
Before browsing sale pages, decide what you can spend in total and rank the features you actually need. Separate must-haves from optional extras: for example, a camera you rely on, enough storage for your apps and photos, or a display that is comfortable for reading. Include delivery costs in your budget. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends identifying what matters most and accounting for shipping and other costs when shopping online (FTC guidance on online shopping).

- Must-haves: Features or capabilities you would reject a phone without.
- Nice-to-haves: Extras worth considering only if the price and other terms still fit.
- Budget ceiling: The maximum checkout total you are comfortable paying, not just the product-page price.
Compare phones on what affects your use
Once you have a shortlist, compare the exact models and configurations—not just brand names or headline specifications. Camera, display, storage, battery expectations and network compatibility are useful comparison points, but their importance depends on how you use a phone. Verizon’s buyer guide, for example, includes network-generation compatibility alongside hardware, camera and display considerations; its carrier-specific guidance should not be treated as a compatibility check for other carriers or countries (Verizon’s cell phone buyer’s guide).

Do not assume that a larger number in a specification alone establishes better results for your needs.
- Display: Think about how much screen space and what kind of viewing experience you want for reading, video and everyday use.
- Storage: Match the phone’s storage configuration to the apps, photos and files you expect to keep on the device.
- Battery: Consider your expected daily use and whether you can charge during the day. A specification or seller claim is not a guarantee of your real-world battery life.
Verify compatibility with your carrier
Before buying, check that the exact model and version in the listing works with the carrier and network you intend to use. A model name alone may not identify the precise variant being sold. Confirm compatibility with the carrier for your region, and check whether the device is carrier-locked if you need to use another network. Do not infer that a phone described as “unlocked” supports every carrier or network.

Compare the full sale price and conditions
Compare the same model, storage configuration and condition across sellers. Calculate what you will actually pay at checkout, including shipping, handling, taxes and other fees. Check whether the advertised price depends on a particular payment method, trade-in, plan or other condition, and whether a price match or later price adjustment is available. Do not treat a markdown as proof of value without comparing the total cost and terms. The FTC advises shoppers to include shipping and other charges and read the fine print, including any different rules for sale or clearance items (FTC online-shopping guidance).
Assess the seller and the specific listing
Check who is actually selling the phone, especially on a marketplace where the platform and seller may be different businesses. Review seller contact details, reputation, marketplace protections, the condition description and photos of the actual item where available. Read the refund and return policy for that seller and listing. The FTC warns that a very low price on an expensive item can be a sign that it might be fake (FTC guidance on buying from an online marketplace).

- Save the listing, seller communications, receipt and relevant policy text.
- Check whether the marketplace protection applies to this particular seller and item.
- Pay through a method with consumer protections where available, and do not move payment outside the marketplace’s system.
Read return and warranty terms before paying
Find the return deadline and determine who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies and what condition the phone must be in for a return. Sale or clearance items may have different rules. Then read the written warranty: note its duration, coverage, exclusions, claims process and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund. Identify who handles a claim and whether you would have to ship the phone. Compare any offered service contract with the warranty already included rather than assuming extra coverage is worthwhile. Apply extra checks to a pre-owned phone
For a pre-owned iPhone, Apple specifically advises checking the return policy, Activation Lock, carrier lock and battery condition. Apple says that “No SIM restrictions” next to Carrier Lock indicates an unlocked iPhone. If you can inspect the device, Apple also advises: “If the battery won’t charge, don’t buy the iPhone.” These checks are specific to pre-owned iPhones; for any phone, verify the exact device’s compatibility with your intended carrier (Apple’s guide to buying a pre-owned iPhone).

Use a final listing check before checkout
- Confirm the exact model, storage configuration, condition and seller.
- Verify that the model version works with your intended carrier and network.
- Calculate the checkout total, including delivery and fees, and note any conditions attached to the price.
- Read the listing-specific return, refund and warranty terms, including deadlines, shipping responsibilities and fees.
- Check seller details and marketplace protections, then save the listing and policy records.
- For a pre-owned iPhone, check Activation Lock, carrier lock and battery condition using Apple’s guidance.
