In Bluehost’s documented Self-Managed VPS workflow, you choose how to provide SSH access before provisioning, then receive a guided, phased walkthrough for deploying an application. The process covers dependencies, app files, web-server routing, and a background service; it should not be read as proof that an MCP server automatically performs every deployment action. The Bluehost article was updated September 17, 2026.
What does this MCP workflow cover?
Bluehost describes a purchase and initial deployment flow for its Self-Managed VPS. Within that flow, an assistant helps set up server access and provides deployment instructions in chat. Its article is specific to this Bluehost workflow; it does not establish a universal procedure for every VPS provider, MCP server, or application.

MCP is the connection mechanism in this workflow, not a guarantee that all application setup happens without user involvement. Bluehost describes terminal-ready commands supplied in sections, with chat available for follow-up when an error occurs. Treat this as a guided deployment unless the particular action is explicitly shown as performed for you.
Should you use an existing SSH key or generate a new one?
Before provisioning, Bluehost’s documented flow offers two choices: provide an existing public SSH key or have the assistant generate a new key pair. The public key is the part provided for server access; the private key is the secret credential needed to use that identity.
#1 Best Overall
Use an existing public key
If you already manage multiple servers with an SSH identity, the article says you can provide its public key for the VPS. This avoids creating another key pair for the described workflow. Provide the public key, not the private key.
Generate a new key pair
If you choose a new pair, Bluehost says the private key and connection instructions are delivered after provisioning. Save the private key securely. The article warns that losing it means creating a new pair and reconfiguring access.

Ubuntu’s Server Guide explains that SSH keys can be imported during server installation and can enable passwordless first login: Ubuntu Server Guide: OpenSSH server. That is setup context, not a complete hardening prescription; the cited passage does not determine whether password authentication should be enabled or disabled in your configuration.

What happens after the VPS is provisioned?
Once you confirm the SSH preference, the documented Bluehost flow proceeds with the purchase and provisions the VPS with matching access credentials. Bluehost describes this as avoiding a separate SSH configuration step afterward. That benefit applies to the described flow, not necessarily to other provisioning routes or providers.

How does the initial app deployment proceed?
Bluehost breaks the initial deployment into four phases. Commands are presented in terminal-ready sections, and the user can describe an error in chat to get follow-up guidance.
- Install dependencies. Set up the web server, programming language, and frameworks the application requires.
- Create and transfer app files. Create application files, generate application code as needed, and transfer it to the server.
- Configure web-server routing. Set up routing so a browser request can reach the application.
- Set up a background service. Configure a service intended to keep the app running, including after a server restart.
The source describes these stages but does not publish a universal command sequence. The exact commands and configuration depend on the app and server setup; do not assume every application needs the same dependencies, routing rules, or service definition.

What should you check before exposing services?
Firewall rules and MCP authentication are configuration-specific. Supabase’s guidance for its self-hosted MCP server states: “Do not allow connections to the self-hosted MCP server from the Internet.” It says that server does not offer OAuth 2.1 authentication and directs administrators to restrict external connections and use VPN access or an SSH tunnel. This warning is specific to Supabase’s self-hosted MCP server; check the security model and deployment guidance for the MCP server you actually use. Supabase: Enabling MCP Server Access.

- It does not provide a complete SSH hardening checklist or settle authentication settings for every server.
- It does not establish that an MCP server automatically executes every app deployment action; Bluehost describes commands delivered in sections and troubleshooting through chat.
- It does not prescribe a single deployment architecture. For example, Hezo documents a product-specific VPS setup using Docker, automatic HTTPS, systemd, and a firewall; that is one example, not a requirement for every app. Hezo: Self-hosting on a VPS.
- It does not compare Docker Compose with a systemd-managed app, managed with self-hosted databases, or provider backups with external backups.
For Ubuntu-specific SSH installation and key-import context, consult the Ubuntu Server Guide; for network exposure, follow the documentation for the specific MCP server and provider configuration you use.
