AI Agents Can Lose Useful Git Work—Here’s How Snapshots and Worktrees Help

Agent edits can leave useful work hard to recover. Turn snapshots preserve earlier states; Git worktrees separate task directories. Here’s how they differ and what edio’s five-millisecond claim actually establishes.

AI coding agents do not necessarily break Git itself. The trouble is often managing workspace state: an agent’s later edits can make an earlier useful state hard to recover, while reverting everything may throw away good work. Two different safeguards address that problem: per-turn snapshots, which preserve earlier states within a session, and Git worktrees, which give separate tasks separate working directories.

Why an agent’s edits can become hard to recover

Consider an agent that makes a useful change, then follows it with an edit that damages the result. Restoring the entire workspace to its original state may discard the useful change too. Committing after every turn is another option, but it can clutter a project’s conventional commit history. This is a workflow scenario, not evidence that coding agents damage repositories at any particular rate.

The distinction matters: Git can track and restore changes, but the developer still needs a useful recovery point and a way to separate concurrent work. Snapshotting and worktrees address those needs at different levels.

What edio says its snapshots do

In his edio article, author Dev Dhanadiya describes edio as a Go binary that uses Git’s low-level object machinery to save workspace states for individual turns. The author summarizes the relationship plainly: “edio does not replace Git.”

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

According to that account, edio captures the workspace into a Git tree using a temporary index, creates a chain of shadow commits, and points private refs in refs/edio/* at the snapshots. The article says this snapshot process does not move the active branch or touch the main .git/index; the temporary index is intended to preserve existing staged changes. These are the author’s implementation claims, not results of an independent code audit.

The article describes two commands: edio restore <turn> to restore an earlier turn and edio accept to create a conventional commit from the selected final state. In that described workflow, accepting promotes the chosen state onto the active branch. Check the current project documentation for exact behavior before using these commands, and back up important work before relying on a recovery tool.

What the “under 5 milliseconds” claim establishes

Dhanadiya’s article presents restoring a turn in five milliseconds as a product performance claim. The page does not provide the benchmark environment, sample size, workload, or independent validation needed to treat that number as a reproducible result. It should not be read as a guarantee that every workspace can be restored in under five milliseconds.

No independent rollback benchmark is established by the cited material, so there is no sound basis here for comparing edio’s speed with another tool’s. The practical question is whether its documented snapshot and restore behavior suits your project and has been verified with your own workflow.

How Git worktrees isolate parallel tasks

Git’s official manual describes git worktree as a way to “Manage multiple working trees attached to the same repository.” A linked worktree is a separate checkout directory with its own per-worktree files, including HEAD and the index. Most refs and repository data are shared, subject to documented exceptions. See the Git worktree manual.

This makes worktrees useful when separate agents or tasks should work in distinct directories and branches. They reduce direct competition over one working directory, but they do not establish that the resulting code is correct. Changes still need review and integration.

Creating a separate checkout

A typical Git workflow for creating a new branch and worktree is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
git worktree add -b agent-task ../project-agent-task HEAD

This creates a linked worktree at ../project-agent-task on a new branch named agent-task, starting from the current HEAD. Choose a starting commit appropriate to the task and a destination path that does not already contain a checkout. The new branch is available to that worktree; do not check out the same branch in multiple worktrees at once.

After the agent finishes, inspect its branch and integrate the changes through your normal review process—for example, by merging or cherry-picking. Cursor’s documentation likewise describes separate agent worktrees and review before bringing completed work back. A separate checkout is isolation of working files, not automatic approval of its changes.

What does not carry into a new worktree

Worktrees begin from committed repository state, not a copy of every detail of the current directory. VS Code’s documentation notes that uncommitted tracked changes and ignored files are not automatically copied into a new worktree. If an agent needs a local configuration file or other ignored input, arrange a safe way to provide it rather than assuming the linked checkout has it. Review the VS Code agent worktree guidance for its documented workflow and caveats.

There is also setup and integration overhead: tasks may need dependencies installed or local environment details prepared, and completed work must be reviewed and brought back. Cursor’s agent documentation describes review and integration as part of using worktrees. Neither a separate directory nor a saved snapshot catches semantic defects merely because Git can preserve the state.

Snapshots or worktrees: choose by the failure you want to prevent

Approach Isolation boundary Starting state and local files How changes return Evidence and trade-off
edio turn snapshots Earlier turns within one described session The author describes capturing the workspace, including staged state via a temporary index; behavior should be verified against current documentation. The author describes edio accept as creating a conventional commit from the selected state. Five milliseconds is the author’s claim; the article supplies no reproducible benchmark details or independent validation.
Git worktrees Separate working directory per task, attached to one repository Starts from committed state; uncommitted tracked and ignored files are not copied by default, according to VS Code’s guidance. Review the task branch, then integrate it into the main line of work. Git documents per-worktree state and shared repository data; setup and integration remain necessary.

Use snapshots when the main risk is losing a useful earlier point in one agent’s sequence of edits. Use worktrees when separate tasks need separate checkout directories. They can also be combined: work in a task-specific worktree and preserve useful turn-level recovery points within that workflow, provided the chosen tooling supports it.

A safer workflow for agent-assisted changes

  1. Establish a recoverable baseline. Commit or otherwise back up important work before starting; do not assume a new worktree will inherit uncommitted changes.
  2. Choose the isolation boundary. For sequential edits in one workspace, use a documented snapshot-and-restore workflow. For concurrent tasks, create a separate worktree and branch for each task.
  3. Provide task inputs deliberately. Check whether configuration, ignored files, and dependencies are present in the agent’s checkout. Supply local-only inputs safely where needed.
  4. Review before integration. Inspect the diff and run the checks appropriate to the project. A snapshot can recover a state and a worktree can separate directories; neither certifies the code.
  5. Keep or discard deliberately. Restore a known-good turn only after confirming what state it will replace. Integrate a completed worktree branch only after reviewing its changes.
