Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a Linux installer cannot see an SSD, check the computer’s firmware storage mode before assuming the drive has failed. Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) or RAID settings can prevent an installer from accessing disks; on some systems, disabling RST or changing the controller to AHCI resolves that specific issue. It is not a universal fix, especially for NVMe drives or systems using Intel VMD.
First check whether the firmware sees the SSD
Open the computer’s UEFI or BIOS setup and look for the drive in its storage or device information. If the firmware does not list it, the Linux installer may not be the source of the problem. The available Ubuntu guidance addresses disks hidden from the installer by RST; it does not establish a diagnosis for a drive missing from firmware.

If firmware lists the SSD but the installer does not, note the current storage setting before changing anything. Look for terms such as Intel RST, RAID, or AHCI. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer.

When changing RST or RAID to AHCI may help
Ubuntu’s 24.04 desktop documentation says its installer may detect disks grouped under some RST configurations without being able to access them. Its documented remedy for that case is to turn off RST in firmware. Depending on the computer, this may mean disabling RST or changing the controller protocol to AHCI; not every system offers both choices. See Ubuntu’s Intel RST installation guidance.

- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
AHCI is designed for devices connected through the Serial ATA (SATA) bus. That scope matters: a missing NVMe drive, or a system whose firmware refers to VMD, is not automatically an AHCI problem. The RST guidance does not establish a universal VMD fix.
Before changing firmware settings
- Back up important data. Changing storage configuration can make existing data or an operating system inaccessible. If disks are part of a RAID array, changing or breaking that setup may affect access to the array.
- Protect an existing Windows installation. Windows configured for RST or RAID may fail to boot after the controller is switched to AHCI. Do not change the mode first and assume Windows will adapt automatically.
- Identify the drive and controller. Establish whether the SSD is SATA or NVMe and record the firmware’s exact storage-mode label. These details help distinguish the documented RST case from other causes.
Dual-booting with Windows? Prepare Windows before switching
Ubuntu provides a specific procedure for reconfiguring Windows to use AHCI. Follow its current instructions in full rather than relying on an abbreviated checklist: Reconfigure Windows to use AHCI.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
The procedure prepares Windows storage drivers and uses Safe boot before the firmware change. After Windows starts with the new controller mode, the procedure removes Safe boot and verifies AHCI. Ubuntu’s instructions also include disabling BitLocker and Intel Optane acceleration where applicable. Requirements and screens can differ by Windows version and computer, so use the linked instructions for the steps that match your setup.
Try the appropriate installation path
No existing operating system or RAID data to preserve
If firmware sees the SSD and shows RST or RAID, check the computer maker’s instructions for changing the storage mode. Where supported, turning RST off or selecting AHCI may allow Ubuntu’s installer to access the disk. Do not assume a similarly named option exists on every model.

Existing Windows installation or RAID array
Do not switch modes until you have backed up data and accounted for the existing setup. For Windows dual boot, use Ubuntu’s transition procedure above. If a RAID array contains data you need, avoid changing or dismantling it unless you understand the consequences for that array.

If the SSD remains invisible to the installer
Do not keep treating AHCI as the only explanation. Record the computer model, whether the SSD is SATA or NVMe, the exact firmware storage setting, the Linux distribution and release, and any relevant installer messages. If you use Ubuntu, its installation tutorial explains how to boot the installer from a USB flash drive; boot media is a way to start installation, not a fix for a disk hidden by RST.
A Debian bug report describes one case where a hard disk was detected after Intel RST was configured to AHCI, but a single report does not show how common the problem is or prove that AHCI resolves other detection failures: Debian bug #1035101.
