The options below range from specialist cloud VM providers to large cloud platforms, and they aren’t interchangeable in features, pricing, or support. Compare equivalent server configurations, locations, data transfer, billing, add-ons, and administration before choosing.
Which providers are worth comparing with Kamatera?
This shortlist combines cloud providers named in DigitalOcean’s alternatives guide with companies DigitalOcean identified as competitors in its 2023 annual report. Those are useful starting points, not neutral rankings or proof of feature parity. DigitalOcean’s guide covers specialist providers and hyperscalers; its 2023 annual report names OVHcloud, Vultr, Akamai (Linode), and Hetzner as examples of smaller or niche cloud competitors.

Compare the same workload shape and geography across providers. A headline starting price is not meaningful if one plan includes more memory, storage, or data transfer—or if another requires paid add-ons for backups or administration.
#1 Best Overall
- Compute: Match the vCPU count and allocation or type, along with RAM.
- Storage: Compare storage type and size, not just the capacity number.
- Transfer and networking: Check included outbound transfer and any network charges.
- Billing: Compare hourly or monthly billing, any minimum charge, and whether a monthly cap applies.
- Location: Confirm the specific region available for the configuration you need.
- Extras: Account for backup charges and other required add-ons.
- Administration: Determine whether server setup, maintenance, and application administration are your responsibility or included in a separate managed service.
Prices and terms can change. Confirm the selected configuration, location, billing period, and add-ons on the provider’s own pricing page before committing. Include taxes and support costs in your comparison where applicable.
What do the available price examples establish?
DigitalOcean’s pricing pages provide a dated example of how plan prices and billing terms should be checked. Its Droplet pricing page lists Basic plans from $4 per month and says per-second billing with a 60-second minimum took effect on January 1, 2026. The displayed resources and included transfer vary by configuration, so the starting figure is not a like-for-like Kamatera comparison. Check DigitalOcean’s pricing page for the configuration you would actually select.
Rank #2
DigitalOcean also lists Cloudways managed hosting from $11 per month. That is a separate managed-hosting offer, not a comparable unmanaged VM price. AWS describes Lightsail pricing as low and predictable, but the available pricing information does not establish a numerical comparison against a specific Kamatera server. Review AWS Lightsail pricing for its current product details.
These examples do not establish which provider is cheapest for your workload. A valid comparison needs the same resources, region, transfer allowance, backups, support, taxes, and billing period.

Do you need a VM, or less server administration?
A virtual machine gives you infrastructure to configure and operate. A managed hosting service adds an administration layer and may target particular application types, so its price and responsibilities should not be compared directly with an unmanaged VM.
DigitalOcean distinguishes its Droplet virtual machines from Cloudways managed hosting, which it lists from $11 per month and positions for WordPress and PHP applications. Consider a managed option if reducing server administration matters more than choosing a like-for-like VM. Verify the service scope and current terms before deciding; the listed starting price alone does not specify everything included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you narrow the shortlist?
- Write down the workload: Specify the required CPU, RAM, storage, transfer, and operating model for your application.
- Choose the necessary geography: Check whether each candidate offers the region you need for that configuration.
- Decide who will administer the server: Compare unmanaged VM products separately from managed hosting.
- Build an all-in cost: Add the selected plan, required backups and networking, support, and taxes for the same billing period.
- Verify operational terms: Read current provider terms for support, service commitments, and other requirements important to your workload.
The available provider-list evidence does not establish migration tools, response commitments, service-level agreements, data-residency terms, or performance for a particular workload. Confirm those points directly with each provider rather than assuming they match Kamatera.
