How Do I Pay Someone With My Venmo Balance?

Start a payment to the person in the Venmo app and review the funding method before you send it. If you have access to a Venmo balance and it covers the full payment, Venmo uses the balance. Person-to-person payments cannot be split between your balance and another payment method. If your balance is unavailable or too low, you can pay with a linked bank account or card without adding money to Venmo first.

Pay someone from your Venmo balance

1. In the Venmo app, start a payment and choose the recipient. Check the username or contact details carefully so you select the intended person.

3. Review the recipient, amount, and funding method, then send the payment. Venmo says you cannot change the payment method after sending. Check Venmo’s Payments & Requests FAQ for payment details.

If your Venmo balance is unavailable

Money displayed in your Venmo account is not necessarily available as a Venmo balance for payments. Venmo requires identity verification to unlock balance use. In the mobile app, go to Me > Settings gear > Identity Verification and follow the prompts. See Venmo’s Identity Verification instructions.

If your balance does not cover the payment

Because Venmo does not divide a person-to-person payment between the balance and another method, use a linked bank account or card for the payment if the balance is insufficient or unavailable. You do not need to add money to Venmo first to pay another Venmo user. Venmo explains this in its Adding Money to Your Venmo Balance help page.

Fees and payment timing

• Venmo charges a standard 3% fee for person-to-person payments funded by a credit card. The card issuer may also charge a cash-advance fee or other charges, or apply a higher APR. Check the fee shown in the app and ask your issuer about its own charges. Venmo’s credit-card fee guidance has details.

• Person-to-person payments usually reach the recipient right away, but some bank-funded transactions can take up to five business days and may appear as pending. These timings are described in Venmo’s Payments & Requests FAQ.

• If a payment is pending because it went to an unverified phone number or email address, Venmo says you can take it back while it remains unclaimed. If neither person claims it nor you take it back, it expires after 30 days. See Venmo’s guidance on pending personal payments.

Person-to-person payments are different from checkout

Do not assume that a split-payment or backup-method option sometimes used at merchant checkout applies when you pay another person. Venmo’s person-to-person rule is that a payment is not split between your balance and another preferred method. Merchant checkout follows separate rules; see Venmo’s Paying with Venmo page.
