A Coding Agent Tried to Fix My CameraX Rotation Bug by Waiting. I Asked for Proof Instead.

A delay alone cannot prove a CameraX rotation fix. Learn what to log, when to update targetRotation, and how to test a 180-degree turn.

A delay is not a rotation fix unless you can show what changed while the app waited. For a CameraX preview or analysis stream that turns upside down after a 180-degree rotation, check the display rotation, each use case’s targetRotation, and the frame’s rotationDegrees—then verify the visible or saved result.

Why a 180-degree turn can leave CameraX upside down

CameraX works with several related but distinct values: the display’s rotation, the camera sensor’s orientation, a use case’s target rotation, and the rotation metadata associated with image data. They are not interchangeable. Android’s CameraX guide explains how these values relate and how an app can update use-case rotation: CameraX orientation and rotation.

A 180-degree turn is a useful case to investigate because the Activity may remain alive rather than being recreated. In an issue for Google’s Jetpack Camera App, a preview became upside down when switching directly between landscape and reverse landscape; the report notes that no configuration change or Activity recreation occurred and points to handling display changes with a DisplayListener: Jetpack Camera App issue.

That report is an example, not a universal diagnosis. A separate CameraX Developers discussion describes an ImageAnalysis orientation problem after 180-degree phone rotations with output image rotation enabled, and recommends updating targetRotation when physical orientation changes without an Activity restart: CameraX Developers discussion.

What to inspect before changing code

Display rotation and Activity behavior

Record the value from Display.getRotation() before and after the turn. Also establish whether the app allows all relevant orientations, locks the Activity, or handles configuration changes itself. A physical orientation event and a display rotation change are related, but should not be treated as the same observation.

Use-case target rotation

Log targetRotation for the use cases involved, such as Preview, ImageAnalysis, and ImageCapture. The official CameraX guide demonstrates updating ImageAnalysis and ImageCapture target rotation using either an OrientationEventListener or a DisplayListener. Choose the mechanism that matches how the app handles orientation and Activity lifecycle events; do not assume that an Activity restart will always perform the update.

ImageAnalysis frame metadata

For each analyzed frame, log imageProxy.imageInfo.rotationDegrees. This value describes the clockwise rotation needed for the image data to match the use case’s target rotation. Compare it with the current display rotation, the use case’s target rotation, and the orientation your analyzer or rendering code expects. Seeing a number change is useful evidence, but the final displayed or saved image must also be checked.

Update target rotation when orientation changes

Android’s CameraX guidance says an OrientationEventListener can continuously update camera use-case target rotation as device orientation changes. A DisplayListener is another documented approach, particularly worth considering when the display can rotate without the Activity being recreated. The listener must update the relevant use cases; merely waiting after a turn does not demonstrate that this happened.

For a 180-degree transition that leaves the Activity alive, verify that the app’s rotation-change path runs and assigns the new target rotation to each affected use case. The correct update path depends on the app’s orientation and Activity behavior; do not copy a listener into an app without checking which event it observes and which use cases it updates.

Prove whether a waiting patch changes anything

A timer can change when code runs, but by itself it proves neither that CameraX received an updated target rotation nor that the output became upright. Compare the same transitions with and without the proposed delay, recording observations rather than relying on the timer’s presence.

  1. Establish the setup. Record the device, CameraX version, Activity orientation policy, and whether output image rotation is enabled. Keep these constant across comparisons.
  2. Capture the starting state. Log display rotation, target rotation for each relevant use case, and imageProxy.imageInfo.rotationDegrees. Note whether the Activity is recreated or receives configuration or display callbacks.
  3. Repeat the same transition. Test the same 180-degree turn, including direct landscape-to-reverse-landscape movement if the app supports it. Record the same values and callbacks immediately after the transition and after any proposed wait.
  4. Check the actual result. Confirm whether the Preview is upright and whether captured or analyzed output has the expected orientation. Preview behavior alone does not establish that ImageAnalysis or ImageCapture is correct.
  5. Compare runs. Repeat on the same device and CameraX version with and without the patch. A useful fix should have observable rotation-state changes that align with the correct visual or output orientation, not just a longer pause.

Keep ImageAnalysis from appearing to stall

Close each ImageProxy after processing it. AndroidX source documentation warns that failing to close frames can block the image pipeline, which can look like a camera stall even though it is a separate problem from orientation: ImageProxy reference.

How to interpret the evidence

  • Target rotation stays unchanged after the display rotates: inspect whether the app’s rotation listener runs and updates the affected use cases.
  • Target rotation changes but frame metadata or output remains unexpected: compare the frame’s rotationDegrees with the analyzer’s handling and check whether output image rotation is enabled.
  • The Activity is not recreated: do not rely on recreation as the only route for refreshing orientation state; verify the display or orientation event path instead.
  • Frames stop arriving: check that every ImageProxy is closed before attributing the stall to rotation handling.
  • A delay appears to help: treat it as a timing observation until logs show the event, target rotation, frame metadata, and upright result changing consistently.

The official CameraX guide describes the rotation mechanisms; the Jetpack Camera App issue and CameraX Developers discussion illustrate situations where rotation updates deserve scrutiny. None establishes the cause of every upside-down preview, so the app’s own recorded state and output are the way to distinguish a missing update from another failure.
