In Apple’s cited Apple TV 4K guide, the Music app lists High Quality (AAC) and Lossless (ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz). Lossless playback depends on whether it is available for the song, network conditions, and speaker capability; settings and features may also vary by region or software version. The mobile device remains where you choose music, while Apple TV receives the audio for playback through its connected audio system. See Apple’s AirPlay guidance.

Choose where Apple TV plays the sound
Apple TV 4K can play through its usual connected audio system or send audio to HomePod and other AirPlay-enabled speakers on the same network. Choose a speaker temporarily in Control Center, or set a default audio output in Settings. Non-HomePod AirPlay speakers can behave differently from HomePod, including which system sounds are sent to them. Apple describes these options in its Apple TV AirPlay guide.
When HomePod home-theater audio matters
For Apple TV 4K home-theater audio through HomePod, Apple requires an Apple TV 4K and a HomePod or HomePod mini with current software, assigned to the same room in the Home app. Other AirPlay-compatible speakers do not support this specific home-theater setup. HomePod is optional for ordinary Apple Music playback. See Apple’s HomePod home-theater setup guide.

Share listening with SharePlay
A subscriber can host a SharePlay session from the Music app on Apple TV 4K. Participants can see what is playing, control playback, and add tracks to the shared queue. SharePlay is an optional group-listening feature, not a requirement for playing music. See Apple’s Apple TV SharePlay guide.

Both methods can use a compatible audio output selected for Apple TV. If you specifically want HomePod home-theater audio, use the HomePod setup requirements above; a general AirPlay speaker is not a substitute for that configuration.
