A suddenly slow Windows computer may have a storage problem rather than a software slowdown. The strongest warning is a combination of a Windows or SMART health alert, freezes during file activity, damaged or unreadable files, a drive that becomes read-only or vanishes, and worsening vendor health data. No single symptom proves an SSD is failing, so protect important data first, then diagnose the drive and its connections.
1. Windows reports a storage critical warning
Windows can display a critical warning for a monitored NVM (NVMe) SSD when it detects low spare capacity, significantly degraded reliability from media-related errors or an internal NVM-subsystem error, or a drive that has entered a read-only state. These conditions can appear to users as slow Windows startup, freezing, delayed applications, and trouble installing updates.

On supported systems, Windows exposes three useful health fields: estimated remaining life, available spare capacity, and temperature. They are indicators, not a guarantee of how long the drive will continue working. A warning should be treated as a data-protection event even if the PC still starts normally.
Where to view the Windows health details
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes.
- Select the suspected disk and open its properties or health details.
Windows’ built-in health view monitors NVM SSDs. It does not provide the same coverage for SATA SSDs or hard-disk drives, so a missing health panel does not mean that a SATA drive is healthy. Use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or a SMART tool that supports the specific controller for those devices.

What to do immediately
Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, browser exports, and other data to a separate physical device or a verified cloud destination before running repairs. Microsoft’s storage-warning guidance says: “We strongly recommend you pay attention to this message. Back up your data and contact Microsoft support to resolve any additional concerns or issues.” A backup made after repeated read errors may be incomplete, so open a sample of copied files and check that the destination contains the expected folders.
2. The computer stalls during storage activity
Repeated freezes when opening a folder, launching a program, saving a document, or waking from sleep can occur when an SSD retries reads or its controller struggles with flash media. CrystalDiskInfo lists system freezes and slow response among warning symptoms. The pattern matters: a pause that consistently follows disk activity is more suspicious than a slowdown that occurs while the processor is busy with an unrelated task.
Patterns that point toward storage
- File Explorer hangs when entering one particular folder or opening one particular file.
- Applications take unusually long to launch even though CPU and memory usage are modest.
- Save operations pause, time out, or make the entire desktop unresponsive.
- The system recovers after a long pause and then repeats the behavior during the next read or write.
- Boot or sign-in takes much longer than usual without a corresponding Windows update or startup-app change.
Why a freeze is not proof of SSD failure
Storage-like stalls can also result from a faulty storage driver, outdated SSD firmware, overheating, defective memory, a failing motherboard controller, a loose SATA cable, or file-system damage. A thermal problem may reduce performance only after sustained activity. Memory errors can corrupt data before Windows reports a disk problem. Treat freezing as a trigger to check storage health, not as a diagnosis by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Files become unreadable, corrupt, or fail to save
Storage trouble becomes more concrete when files that previously worked can no longer be opened, folders report corruption, saves fail unexpectedly, or applications crash while reading or writing. Microsoft identifies inaccessible drives, file and folder corruption, unexpected drive-state changes, application failures, and backup failures as possible effects of storage errors.

How to distinguish a disk-linked pattern from an application bug
- Disk-linked: several unrelated applications fail when accessing files on the same volume.
- Location-linked: files on one partition, folder, or physical drive fail while files elsewhere remain usable.
- Activity-linked: errors appear during copying, saving, indexing, or backup jobs.
- One-off software issue: only one application reports an error and the same file works in another program or on another computer.
Do not repeatedly overwrite a failing drive while investigating. If a file is still readable, copy it once to a different device. A failed save can leave a zero-byte or partially written file, so check file sizes and open the copies from the backup destination.
4. The SSD turns read-only or disappears
A read-only SSD can continue allowing data reads while refusing new writes. Windows lists a drive set to read-only as a critical storage condition. The practical symptoms include failed saves, installers that cannot update files, and backups that stop partway through. Intermittent loss of recognition is another documented warning sign: the drive may appear in one boot, vanish in another, or disappear under heavier activity.
What to do when the drive is still visible
- Stop nonessential writes, downloads, game updates, and synchronization jobs.
- Copy the highest-value data first to an external USB backup drive or another independent destination.
- Record the drive model, capacity, connection type, and any health message shown by Windows or the vendor utility.
- Shut down cleanly after the essential copy completes; avoid repeated forced restarts.
What to check when it vanishes
Power the computer off completely and check whether the drive is detected in the firmware setup screen. For a desktop SATA SSD, reseat the data and power cables or try a known-good cable and motherboard port. For an M.2 drive, check that it is fully seated and secured, but do not repeatedly remove it while the system is running. A disappearing drive can reflect a connection, controller, firmware, power, or motherboard problem rather than failed flash cells. If it returns, copy data before attempting repairs.

5. SMART or vendor health status gets worse
SMART data and the SSD maker’s diagnostic software can reveal trends that Windows does not show. CrystalDiskInfo describes Caution as an indication of unstable sectors or early wear, and Bad as a severe warning that critical thresholds have been exceeded and failure is likely soon. SSD attributes differ by manufacturer and controller, so the same percentage or attribute name cannot be interpreted identically across every model.

How to read the result safely
| Status or evidence | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows critical warning | Low spare, media-related reliability degradation, internal NVM-subsystem error, or read-only state detected on a monitored NVM SSD. | Back up immediately and plan diagnosis or replacement. |
| SMART/vendor “Caution” | Unstable sectors or early wear are being reported; interpretation depends on the drive’s attributes. | Back up, check firmware and diagnostics, and monitor only long enough to arrange replacement. |
| SMART/vendor “Bad” | Critical thresholds have been surpassed and failure is considered likely soon. | Minimize use, recover data, and replace the drive. |
| Healthy percentage with symptoms | A reassuring estimate does not rule out controller, connection, firmware, thermal, or sudden electronic failure. | Investigate the symptoms and event logs rather than relying on the percentage alone. |
SMART and vendor tools cannot predict an exact failure date. A drive may run for a while after a warning or stop abruptly, so a healthy-looking percentage is not a substitute for a current backup.
How to check an SSD without making the situation worse
1. Protect the data before repair attempts
Use an external USB drive or another independent storage location for the first copy. Prioritize unique files over easily reinstalled applications. If the drive repeatedly disconnects, copy smaller groups and stop if each attempt causes severe system hangs; professional data-recovery help may be safer than repeated power cycles.
2. Check Windows health information
Use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes and inspect the selected disk’s health details. Note whether Windows reports estimated life, available spare, temperature, reliability degradation, or read-only status. Remember that this built-in view is for monitored NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs.

4. Use SMART data from a compatible utility
Choose a SMART utility that supports the drive and its controller, especially for SATA models that Windows may not monitor. Compare current attributes with earlier reports if you have them. Focus on worsening warnings, media errors, unsafe shutdowns, and uncorrectable or unstable sectors, while remembering that attribute names and thresholds vary by vendor.
5. Check the file system with chkdsk /scan
After protecting the data, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /scan
Microsoft Learn describes CHKDSK as a file-system diagnostic. It can identify logical corruption, but it cannot certify that the SSD hardware is healthy or repair failing flash cells. Avoid treating a clean scan as proof that the drive can be trusted with the only copy of important data.

6. Review Event Viewer, drivers, and firmware
Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows logs around the time of freezes, disconnects, or failed saves. Storage and disk errors that recur with the same drive are stronger evidence than a single unrelated warning. Microsoft also recommends checking storage drivers and firmware. Install updates only after the important data is safe and only when the update applies to the exact hardware.

SSD failure or another Windows problem?
Use multiple evidence sources instead of a single symptom. The following comparisons help narrow the cause.
| Question | More consistent with SSD trouble | Other plausible causes |
|---|---|---|
| Does Windows show health data? | Critical warning, low spare, reliability degradation, high temperature, or read-only state on an NVM SSD. | No warning does not exclude SATA, firmware, controller, cable, or sudden electronic faults. |
| When does the PC slow down? | During file opens, saves, launches, copying, or backup operations. | Constant high CPU, memory pressure, thermal throttling, or a runaway background process. |
| Where do errors occur? | Files and applications using one volume or physical disk. | All applications, even when they do not access the affected drive. |
| What do diagnostics show? | Worsening SMART/vendor status or repeated disk errors in Event Viewer. | Clean storage diagnostics alongside memory, driver, firmware, or motherboard errors. |
NVM/NVMe and SATA drives require different evidence. Windows’ built-in health view covers monitored NVM SSDs, while SATA health usually depends on vendor software or a compatible SMART reader. A file-system scan can find logical damage, but it does not separate every hardware fault from corruption caused by an earlier crash.
When replacement is the right decision
Replace the SSD when a critical Windows warning is accompanied by read-only behavior, disappearing detection, corrupt files, repeated storage errors, or a SMART/vendor “Bad” status. Replacement is also prudent when “Caution” keeps worsening or the drive causes recurring freezes after cables, drivers, firmware, thermals, and memory have been checked.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choosing a direct replacement
- Confirm whether the current drive is M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, or 2.5-inch SATA.
- Match the physical size, such as the supported M.2 length, and verify motherboard or laptop clearance.
- Check the interface supported by the system; an M.2 slot does not automatically support every protocol.
- Choose enough capacity for the operating system, applications, recovery space, and working data.
- Verify that the computer supports the replacement model and that you have a way to reinstall or clone Windows after the backup.
An external USB drive is useful for the immediate backup Microsoft recommends before further diagnostics or replacement. It is a backup destination, not a repair for the failing internal SSD.
A practical decision checklist
- Critical warning or read-only state: stop unnecessary writes, back up, and arrange replacement.
- Corruption or failed saves on one volume: copy data, check SMART/vendor health, then run
chkdsk /scan. - Freezes without health evidence: inspect Event Viewer, drivers, firmware, thermals, memory, cables, and controller behavior before blaming the SSD.
- Drive disappears intermittently: back up while it is visible, then test the connection and firmware; do not assume repeated reconnection is harmless.
- “Caution” or “Bad” status: treat the status as a warning, not an exact countdown, and keep more than one current copy of important data.
The urgency comes from combined evidence: protect data first, then distinguish hardware health from file-system damage and other Windows causes. A slow PC can be software-related, but a slow PC that freezes during disk activity, corrupts files, disappears, or reports declining health should be treated as a storage-risk incident.
