SRS WebRTC vs RTMP for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Channel

SRS documents RTMP ingest for prerecorded video and WebRTC for real-time SRS paths. For YouTube, use the platform’s recommended RTMPS ingest route.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a pre-recorded YouTube live channel, use RTMP/RTMPS for the YouTube-facing stream; do not treat SRS WebRTC as a direct substitute. SRS documents an FFmpeg-based workflow that takes a VOD file and publishes it to SRS as RTMP, while YouTube recommends RTMPS for its live ingest. WebRTC belongs in the picture when you have a specific real-time publishing or playback leg inside an SRS workflow—not as a documented direct route into YouTube Live.

What each protocol does in this workflow

The useful question is not which protocol is universally better. It is which leg of the streaming pipeline each protocol serves:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. File to SRS: SRS documents using FFmpeg or another tool to take a file such as an MP4 or FLV and publish it to SRS as RTMP. It specifically describes converting a VOD file to a live stream. SRS ingest documentation
  2. SRS to YouTube: SRS describes RTMP as a compatible way to publish to a platform such as YouTube. At YouTube’s ingest boundary, YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. SRS RTMP documentation · YouTube encoder guidance
  3. Real-time interaction within SRS: SRS documents WebRTC publishing and playback, including network setup considerations. That makes WebRTC relevant if your SRS setup needs a real-time browser or WebRTC leg. The reviewed documentation does not establish WebRTC as a direct YouTube ingest protocol. SRS WebRTC documentation

In short, keep the YouTube-facing leg on the documented RTMPS route. Add WebRTC only for a defined SRS real-time use case.

RTMP/RTMPS vs SRS WebRTC

Question RTMP/RTMPS WebRTC in SRS
Documented role for this workflow SRS documents RTMP publishing to platforms such as YouTube; YouTube recommends RTMPS for its ingest. SRS documents WebRTC publishing and playback, and RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion. Direct WebRTC ingest by YouTube is not established by the reviewed sources.
When to choose it When sending the stream into YouTube. When the SRS workflow needs a real-time WebRTC publishing or playback leg.
Setup considerations Use the current YouTube RTMPS server URL and stream key; check the URL, path, encryption, and port requirements. Check the candidate address and UDP reachability; browser publishing from outside localhost requires HTTPS, according to the SRS documentation.
Latency comparison No end-to-end latency figure is established for this particular architecture. No end-to-end latency figure is established for this particular architecture.

This is a comparison of documented roles, not a latency benchmark. Neither protocol choice alone establishes the end-to-end delay of your complete file-to-SRS-to-YouTube pipeline.

How to build the self-hosted workflow

1. Match documentation to your SRS release

Choose the SRS release you intend to run and follow documentation for that release. The SRS ingest reference is v6 and marked stable; the retrieved RTMP reference is v7 and marked unstable; the v5 RTMP page is archived. Examples and configuration details can differ across releases, so do not copy a snippet from a different version without checking it against your deployment. SRS v6 ingest · SRS v7 RTMP · SRS v5 RTMP archive

2. Ingest the recording into SRS

Use the SRS ingest pattern for a VOD file: FFmpeg reads the file and publishes a live RTMP stream to SRS. SRS names MP4 and FLV among the file types and describes VOD-to-live conversion. Its documentation establishes the pattern, but not a tested command or a production-ready schedule for looping a file indefinitely. Follow the matching-version ingest instructions and separately plan how your process will restart or loop the media. SRS ingest documentation

3. Configure the YouTube-facing publisher

In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream URL and key for the event or stream you are setting up, then configure the publishing path to use the RTMPS endpoint where supported. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies RTMPS transport, a valid server and path, and port 443. Use the exact values shown for your stream rather than assuming a URL or path. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide

4. Check the video and audio settings

Configure the encoder in the file-to-SRS publishing path to meet YouTube’s current recommendations, and verify what your particular FFmpeg build and SRS release support together. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with intervals not exceeding 4 seconds. Its guidance lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, and 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every SRS and FFmpeg combination supports every codec or transport arrangement. Confirm the current supported codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio options on YouTube’s encoder page before going live. YouTube encoder guidance

5. Add WebRTC only if SRS needs it

If you also need an SRS WebRTC publishing or playback path, follow the WebRTC instructions for your deployed release. Check that the configured candidate IP is reachable and that the required UDP mapping is in place. For browser publishing from a non-local context, the SRS documentation calls for HTTPS. These WebRTC network requirements apply to that SRS leg; they do not replace YouTube’s RTMPS ingest requirements. SRS WebRTC documentation

Settings and checks before going live

  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS at YouTube’s ingest boundary, following the current server URL and path supplied for your stream.
  • Port and encryption: Check the RTMPS requirements, including port 443, against the current YouTube guidance and the network rules on your server.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate. Use the current platform guidance for a target bitrate appropriate to your chosen video settings; no particular resolution-to-bitrate table is established here.
  • Audio: The guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, and 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Select the channel layout your program actually uses.
  • File continuity: Decide how the VOD process will handle the end of the recording and recover from a stopped process. The SRS ingest pattern does not, by itself, establish an always-on looping schedule.
  • Rights and eligibility: Use recordings you have the rights to stream, including rights to music, images, and other included material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules before building a channel around repeated recordings; a live transport protocol does not grant content rights or guarantee monetization.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest for some HDR or codec cases not supported by RTMP. HLS sends video in segments and can have higher latency, so it is a separate option to assess against YouTube’s requirements—not a reason to route a normal SRS WebRTC leg directly to YouTube. YouTube HLS guide

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong server URL, path, key, RTMPS setting, or blocked port. Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the full path and RTMPS transport, and check outbound access to port 443 against the YouTube RTMPS guide.
The stream connects but YouTube reports an encoder issue Video or audio settings may not match current platform guidance, or the chosen combination may not be supported by the deployed FFmpeg/SRS versions. Check codec, constant-bitrate mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s current encoder guidance; confirm support in the exact binaries and release you run.
WebRTC works locally but not from another network The candidate address or UDP reachability may not be correct; non-local browser publishing may lack HTTPS. Verify the candidate IP and UDP mapping, and use HTTPS for non-local browser publishing as directed by the SRS WebRTC documentation.
The recording ends and the live feed stops A single-file ingest does not establish a looping or restart schedule. Implement and test the file-looping and process-recovery behavior for your deployment, using documentation that matches your SRS release. Do not assume the ingest example provides a production-ready 24/7 schedule.
The stream drops after initially working The publisher process, network path, key, or server may have stopped or changed. Check logs on the FFmpeg/SRS publishing path, confirm the current YouTube stream key and endpoint, and test reconnection behavior before relying on unattended operation.

Self-hosting costs and operational trade-offs

Running SRS yourself means providing compute for SRS and FFmpeg and keeping the file-to-SRS and YouTube publishing path operational. A VPS or other cloud compute can be relevant if the stream must continue while your home computer is off, but the cost depends on the provider, instance, storage, and network usage; no provider or price is established here. A home-hosted setup avoids a VPS bill but still depends on your computer, power, and internet connection. Budget time as well as infrastructure for updates, monitoring, file looping, and recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply a pre-recorded YouTube channel that stays live, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to operating SRS and FFmpeg yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
